==Security Office==

Hunter entered the Security offices, things were hectic but he located Melissa Jarvis, "Hello Lieutenant," he said approaching her, "how are things going?"

"Very well Sir. We have completed processing the prisoners and are securing them for the trip to Rura Pente. She paused, "We are going to secure them in the family quarters since we are not using them at the moment."

"Very good," said Hunter, "We've been asked to escort a diplomat to the Trill Homeworld, she's in a hurry to get there." Hunter surveyed the scene around the security office, "I'd like have her transported in an auxiliary craft. I will accompanying her. I'd like you to oversee the security arrangements of this flight and join us."

"Yes Sir. I will make the arrangements." Melissa was not happy about this. She did not ike the idea of leaving when the ship was full of prisoners. She would have to make sure that all the prisoner security details were finished before she left.

"Good," said Hunter, "I'll be escorting the Ambassador to the main shuttle bay about 1300, please meet us there then."

"Aye Sir," said Melissa.

Hunter nodded at Melissa, turning, he left security and made his way to the turbolift. "Bridge," he said. The turbolift aknowledged his command and took him to the bridge. When the doors opened he stepped out of the turbolift and sat down next to Wright, who seemed busy looking over a console display.

"Report Number One?"

"All stations report ready for departure." Wright smiled. "Just give the word Sir."

Hunter tapped a few commands on his console, looking up he nodded his approval at Wright.

"Conn make your heading 180 mark 0 and take us out, one-quarter impulse."

"Aye-Aye captain" responded the helmsman.

The Zion's impulse engines burst to life and it drifted slowly from the station out into the expanse of space.

After 20 minutes Hunter tapped the console again, "Helm, full ahead, warp factor 5 and engage cloak."

The Zion sped away on a rainbow of light and then shimmered and vanished as the cloak concealed her.

Hunter stood up, "well, Number One, I'm going to get ready for my trip with the diplomat, You have command until I return from the Trill homeworld. "

"Very good Sir. We will keep her all in one piece until you get back." Wright smiled, "Have a safe and productive trip." Wrigth extended his arm to shake Hunter's hand.

Hunter shook Wrights hand, "thanks Number One, I'll try." Hunter "We'll see you at the rendezvous point." he said as the turbolift door closed.

Riaan, Operations Manager, [PST]

Stardate: 58204.21 1030

= Doctor’s office=

Teilani rubbed her temples. She simply could not understand why Riaan took so long regaining her memory. Riaans physiology was similar as that of humans.

She tapped her console: “Computer display all information regarding humanoid short and long term memories.” The following information appeared on the screen.

Inmost humanoid species known to Maqui science, memories are stored in the brain tissue in the form of neurochemical engrams. These engrams can be directly manipulated in four different ways, depending upon the desired result. The can be altered, suppressed, destroyed or stimulated.

Stimulation of the engrams was, according to the display, a complex process that involved sub molecular manipulation of neurochemical enzymes. It involved binding a chemical stimulant agent onto the synaptic transmitters that permit the brain to access the information stored in the engram. The precise chemical formula of an effective stimulant agent will vary based on the species, and sometimes the blood type.

The only most serious disadvantage is that many sophisticated measures of brain chemistry are capable of detecting the presence of a foreign substance in the brain tissue.

Teilani rubbed her eyes and took a drink from her coffee. This material was quite difficult to study and sometimes to understand. She continued. She needed to be selectively eliminating engrams, so that the correct ones were targeted. Even small errors could leave an individual robbed of vital skills, such as language and key elements of personal identity.

Teilani sighed and mumbled to herself. “Now where is the procedure to do this?” She continued reading.

“Aha, here we are.” Apparently to reactivate the current and past memories she needs to apply a bioelectrical field coupled with a chemical catalyst that simulates the process of memory formation. Why couldn’t she think of that before?

Computer: “close file,” Teilani said while getting up. She placed her empty mug on the table and walked back to main sickbay.

On bio bed 4 Riaan was still out like a light. Using her tricorder Teilani scanned Riaan, making sure that she used the right chemical catalyst. She prepared a hypospray with the catalyst agent and pressed it against Riaans neck. “Computer, erect a level 3 bio electrical field around bio bed 4.

A slight shimmer showed that the field was up. Teilani looked at the console, Riaans blood pressure went up, breathing accelerated. Her alpha and beta brain waves were of the chart. Riaan tossed and shook her head. Rapid eye movements were visible behind her eye lids.

“Computer decrease electrical field by 15%," Teilani ordered. Riaans blood pressure lowered, that was a good sign. “Decrease by another 20%.” Slowly but surely Riaans medical readings turned to their normal value.

“Computer, switch off bio electrical field. Riaan, Teilani called. “Can you hear me, open your eyes.”

Slowly Riaan opened her yes. She saw Teilani standing next to her and realized where she was even though things were a slight blur. She still had no recollection of how she even got to sickbay, other then she was checking the cargo that came in and she heard someone behind her to see who was their when for no apparent reason the bins on the one wall came crashing down and she had no way to get of the way. She even remembered contacting Teilani to inform her that her medical supplies was now in that was the last thing Riaan remembered and now waking up in sickbay. Slowly Riaan began seeing things more clearly.

“Hey, welcome back to the living.”

Thank you doctor, replied Riaan. “What am I doin’here?”

“Well you had a nasty accident in Cargo bay two nights ago. Tell me do you know what day it is? Do you know who I am?”

Riaan laughed at the doctor, “why wouldn’t I you are the ship’s doctor on the USS Zion and recently we started to becoming friends.”

“Phew, Teilani said, You had me worried there for a sec.”

“Today I am not sure but last date I remember was April 19, 2382, I was checking the manifest and contacted you informing you that your medical supplies were in. I heard someone behind me and felt as if I was being watched I turned around and asked who was there, next thing the bins came cascading down on me and I had no way to get out of harms way and now I am here. Don’t even know who found me or how I got here.”

“No, lie down for a bit. Let the medication do its work.” Teilani took another hypospray with inaprovaline to avoid Riaan becoming nauseous of the catalyst.

Riaan had laid back down on the bio bed as she regained her bearings. It was weird being a patient in sickbay. Riaan was hoping that this was to be her last visit she hoped unless of course coming down to say hi to Teilani or go for a coffee or something.

“You can return to your quarters but you are not permitted to go back to work now. Not sooner than tomorrow morning. I will be checking on you later tonight.”

“I understand doctor, how about dinner in my quarters,” as Riaan smiled at Teilani, “nothing to fancy of course.” I'll ask my roommate for some quality time to have company in. She is very understandable and flexible we have a system in place when either of us wish to entertain.

Teilani smiled. “That will be fine Ensign.”

After Riaan exited sickbay and proceeded back to her own quarters, slightly wobbly on her legs. Five minutes later Riaan arrived back at her quarters

=Riaan’s Quarters=

It was great being back in her quarters. Riaan went and grabbed a hot sonic shower then proceeded to her bed afterwards. Riaan had lain day figuring she would rest for a few minutes before checking for any important messages, or things that needed to be tended to, which could be dealt with later, before she knew it she fell asleep.

==Dr Danes office. ==

Ryan was sitting in Teilani's chair as she walked in. "Hello doctor how are you? He asked softly. "Not as bad as I heard I see."

"Excuse me Major? Teilani asked surprised. What are you doin'here, is there anything wrong?"

"What I'm doing here?" Ryan said with badly played suprisement. "Well I thought you wouldn't be needing your office since you where", Ryan looked at his PADD "on life support after the Marine CO went crazy and slaughtered 2 of your nurses and almost killed you, when he was trying to protect his little brad of a daughter.."

Teilani looked at him with a questionable look on her face. What was he talking about.

"No, no wait it gets better." Ryan said. "The Major in question, and what I gather that's me, that is to say myself, in this tale, would be brought to Bajor and stripped of rank and awaiting trial on 2 accounts of manslaughter and 1 of heavy assault." Ryan laughed darkly. "This doctor is pure slander, I could press charges, and they would be in the brig within the hour, spreading carefully thought out lies about a commanding officer is, well, even worse than hitting them. But I want a different approach." He paused "Doctor what do you know about doctor/ patient confidentiality?"

"Enough, why do you ask? Teilani responded. She did not like the way he spoke to her. She felt a little spark of anger growing rapidly inside her.

"Then you know your personnel is bound to follow that code. Nurses, med techs everyone is sickbay is to keep such things confidential. That is an important piece of your job, doctor. I thought you had your men listening to you, but apparently they don't." Ryan was mad.

"But I guess I should make this against you. Its against them. So I'm going to give you a compromise doc. You will call your men and form a front with me. Show me you are an ethical doctor, show me that I do not need to be disappointed in you. Show me you're the person I thought you where." It was an ordered challenge. Ryan took a risk, she could ask him to leave and he would have to really pull rank on her, and he didn't want that. "now with all do respect, call them."

Teilani had had enough. She was going to clear this once and for all.

Teilani tapped her combadge Dane to Mr Nelson and Mr Adams. Please report to my office immediately.

Nelson was in the messhal when Teilani's message reached them. Sure doc I'm on my way Walking along the corridor to sickbay he met up with

Adam.

"Hey Adam, doc wanted to see you too? "Yes, she does he responded. I wonder what is going on."

Both men entered her office. Teilani had place herself on her desk, blocking the view of Madriani. "Hey boss, Nelson said. "what's up? "I want to talk to you two about the rumors currently floating around the Zion," Teilani

said bluntly.

Adam and Nelson looked at eachother. "What were you to guys thinking. You do very well know that everything that happens in sickbay remains in sickbay. No matter what.

"But Ma'am, we did not start the rumors", Adam said softly. "We mainly talked about the way the Major treated us. Guess others must have over heard and exaggerated it a little."

"That is an understatement, Teilani snarled. According to the latest gossip, you two are dead and I am on lifesupport. But that is besides the point. You should never have talked about it anyway. You 2 know the risks." Teilani

looked at her crew. "Now but that is not all I have heard it seems that the environmental systems as well as the replicators are malfunctioning at the Marine barracks. Do you know anything about that!"

Adam and Nelson did not say anything but looked shamefully at the ground. "I will take this as a yes, Teilani concluded. "I want you to contact those who are involved in these little pranks and get it fixed today. You two do know that I can not let this go by right."

" But Doc," Nelson. "It was not .. ". "Mr Nelson", Teilani ordered. Don't make it any worse that it already is." Adam an Nelson nodded, they knew they were in trouble now.

"Alright," Teilani said. "Go back to your respective duties. I will let you know any disciplinary actions later on. Dismissed."

Teilani watch Nelson and Adam leave. She would deal with them later.

She turned back to the Major, who was still sitting in her chair. She looked at him, her green eyes fixed to his face. A hot flash of anger swept through Teilani. She placed her hands on her desk, getting her face close to Madriani's. "Now Major Madriani, she said spitting out his name as if it was a dirty piece of mud. "I hope you're satisfied by this. But let me make 1 thing very clear. Don't you ever, ever use that tone of voice to me again. If you have a problem with any of my crew in the future you directly come to me." What ever gave you the idea that I have no ethics, suggesting that I am unable to do my job."

"SIT DOWN MAJOR, I am not finished yet." Teilani ordered as Madriani wanted to get up.

"I have a lot of respect for you Major Madriani but I am not one of your

Marines, whom you can order around like a little kid. You are in no position to tell me how I should handle my crew or run sickbay. As you have heard, disciplinary actions will be taken, that I can assure

you, but I certainly do not need you to point that out to me. If you still have a problem with that I suggest that you take this up with the Commander, Teilani said with a deceptively calm tone of voice.

" I consider this matter closed once and for all. Now I would appreciated it if you would leave so that I can get on with my work."

"Doctor, you may not be one of my marines, but be glad your not, if you where, you would be scrubbing plasma conduits the rest of your career after that comment." Ryan smiled darkly. "You're a strict person doctor, but your to good on them. Did you really think I would let the person messing with the marines get of lightly?" He laughed in his deep voice. "Dear doctor. The pigs have had there meal, Now its time to slaughter them." He stood up and walked away. He stopped in the door opening. "Did you ever walk on the beach and suddenly saw you were bleeding? It doesn't even hurt until then..." he smiled. "A pleasant day, doctor."

Ryan walked out of the office. He stepped into the turbo lift. "did you get them?" he said as he got in. Alice knight his chief sniper stood next to him. "they didn't even feel it, clear shot." Ryan smiled "Good, that is good." They got off on deck 11, they went separate ways, Alice to her quarters and Ryan to the Marine Command Center. He walked in. "status?" Quartermaster Quince Quarton smiled. "Operation Jessep is up and running."

Lunch at Miranda's "

Stardate: 58204.21 1130

58204.21 1130

A hunger pang rumbled in her stomach. Zoei startled at the sound. She glanced at her chronometer. She had planned to meet Teilani for lunch today. As involved in her work as she had been this morning, she had not taken the time to confirm the time of their meeting.

Patia Zoei to Teilani Dane

Teilani here, go ahead Patia

Did you still have time to meet for lunch today?

I surely have Patia

How does Miranda's sound?

Miranda's? That would be fine. I'm on my way. Teilani out

The comm system went silent. Patia quickly straightened her desk so she could pick up where she left off when she returned. A final glance told her all was in place. She strode from her office, pausing barely long enough for the office doors to open. It had been a long time since she had been out for a friendly lunch.

===Miranda's===

Miranda's was hopping with the lunch crowd when she arrived. A quick scan of the room didn't reveal Teilani was there yet. She found a quiet table on the side of the room. Choosing the seat with her face to the door, Patia settled in to wait.

Teilani rubbed her temples, that darn headache. She cleaned her desk, filing some report as she looked at her chronometer. Darn she was late for her lunch with Patia. Teilani hurried. As she entered Miranda's she noticed Patia was already there.

"My apologies for being late Patia," Teilani said. "I hope you did not have to wait long."

"I have just been here a few minutes. I knew if I didn't leave as soon as we talked, I wouldn't be leaving at all. It has been one of those days." Patia rotated her head and rubbed the back of her neck. "How is your day? You look like you have a headache?"

Teilani nodded. "Yes and it is getting worse day by day, she answered. "But it will pass after I have eaten I think, she said smiling. *This was a little lie but Patia did not need to know this. Teilani thought, hopefully her betazoid senses would not pick this up*. Have you already ordered?

"No, I haven't ordered. What would you like?"

I would like to have a corn salad with little strips of chicken and a cup of coffee please. Teilani said.

Zoei crossed to the replicator. "Corn salad with little strips of chicken, Jamacian coffee double strong and double sweet, Broccoli soup, raspberry iced tea." Just moments later, Zoei picked up the tray and turned back to the table. The doctor did not look like she was having a good day. She would also lay odds that headache wasn't going away any time soon.

"Here you are, steaming hot from the replicator. Tension headache or sick headache?"

Teilani looked at Patia. "I am feeling o.k., looked too long to the console I guess. It was a .... difficult day in sickbay. But I will be fine.” Teilani played with her food. Despite the rumble in her stomach she could not get anything to eat. She took a drink from her coffee. Then keeping up appearances she managed to get some salad in her mouth.

“So how was your day today.” Teilani asked. Neatly changing the subject.

"It has been a very long day, very long. Already, I am at the point where I am ready for it to be over so I can go home and go to bed. That usually doesn't happen until at least 1500 hours," Zoei said with a slight smile. She sipped her tea. The raspberry burse sharply over her tongue. Taking her spoon, she stirred her soup. It was very rhythmic, almost hypnotic the way the spoon rotated in the bowl. "I am sorry, I am not the best company today." Again, Zoei smiled slightly.

"Are you ready for us to get underway again? All of your supplies arrive and get loaded?"

"To be honest Patia, I am glad that we are on our way again." I am not a person sitting around doin' nothing. Teilani rubbed her temples again. "Ah the supplies, I still am surprised that some-one can get a simple order so mixed up. I have the majority of it but I do hope we wont run into anything cause then I need to fall back to some oldfashioned doin's. Teilani laughed "but that can be fun of course." Making a spleen out of a piece of bulkhead."

Teilani pushed away the salad plate. The smell made her nauseous.

"But I do have good news though, I have found a new headnurse back on QT. "

"That is wonderful news! You arranged that quickly, too! Did you have to hire just the headnurse or did you have other staff you needed?"

“No just the headnurse, my previous one decided to stay behind due to family problems. And I needed some extra pair of hands and one led to the other.”

“But Patia, how about you, are you getting enough sleep.” Teilani asked softly. You seemed to be a little distracted. Nothing serious I hope?”

"Ah, sleep. I think I have been burning the candle a bit at both ends. I have been busy with an extraordinary amount of reports. Also, there is a little something from my childhood that has popped up again. Hopefully it will be resolved quite soon, but it weighs on my mind. I am waiting to hear back from my father on some questions I had for him. He is pretty good about responding promptly." Patia blinked rapidly and looked down at her soup. She continued stirring, but didn't even attempt to taste it.

"Patia, Teilani said softly so that nobody would overhear them. "I'm not a counselor but I am a good listner so if you feel you need to talk just give me call. We are here to help eachother. Either on duty of off duty." Teilani's eyes were filled with compassion and understanding, she had a pretty good idea how the counselor might feel.

"I appreciate that, more than you can know. You just may get that call."

Teilani smiled, "are we two sorry people or what but I know what makes it a bit better." She stood up and walked over to the replicator. "computer a bowl of chocolate icecream with whiped cream and raspberry coulis, and some wafers, and 2 spoons." Teilani rubbed her temples while she was waiting.

She place the bowl on the table. "It is murder for your waist but it taste awsome."

"Oh, sorry people we are, but this should make us a little less sorry. It has been so long since I have indulged in something like this. I feel almost guilty," Patia chuckled.

"Well lets eat then," Teilani handed her the spoon.

Sorry "

Adam's and Nelson left Sickbay after their shift. They felt completely let down my the CMO. During their break they decided that it was time for them to visit with the XO.

"Man, that MAdriani is a jerk, " said Adam.

"Yes, he was a jerk but he has a point. We should not have talked about what happened outside of sickbay. " The two of them arrived outside the XOs office and were admitted after ringing the door chime.

"Sir," began Nelson. "We have a problem."

"What is the matter crewman?" Wright motioned for them to take a seat.

Nelson told Wright about the incident in sickbay and about how they were treated. He was nervous and stuttered several times. Adam just looked at his feet and said nothing.

"Did you bring this to the attention of Dr. Dane?"

"Yes sir, but she did not appear to take any action. Today we were reprimanded for breaking confidentiality."

"Explain please,"said Wright.

"Well after the incident we told several of our friends about it and well the Major and doctor took exception to that and reprimanded us. Our comments have apparently been blown out of proportion by the ships rumor mill."

"I see," Wright had the feeling there was more. to this story." Is there anything else that I need to know about? I want to hear everything..

Nelson looked at Adam who was not glaring back at him. "Sir, apparently someone has been pulling pranks on the Marine's.. We do not know who is doing it for sure but we have a pretty good idea who is behind it."

"And that would be?"

"Craig Witmore in engineering and Mark Philips in Operations. They are friends of ours and I believe that they were trying to get even for us."

"I see." Wright paused to consider the situation. "Very well first things first." Wright tapped his comm badge. "Wright to Major Madriani please report to my office now."

"Acknowledged"

When Madriani arrived Wright pointed to a empty chair. "Please have a seat Major. These crewmen tell me that there is a problem. I would like to get to the bottom of this problem and hopefully resolve this issue."

Madriani looked at the two crewmen and a scowl came on his face as he sat down and waited for the commander.

"Very well, we will start with the crewmen. You claim that you were assaulted in sickbay by the Major. Is that correct?"

"Well Sir, " said Nelson, "I can understand the Major's anxiety but I would think that a man in command of a marine unit would have better control. We do not want him in trouble. All I want is for him to apologize, that is all I ever wanted."

"I see and what about the rumors? Do you think that they have damaged the Major's reputation," asked Wright.

Adam's head snapped up, "He damaged his own reputation by attacking us."

"Sir," said Nelson quickly cutting off Adam, "I am sorry about that. We were upset and we told our friends about it. We did not mean for it to get so out of control. I am sorry Sir," said Nelson to Madriani.

"How about you Crewman," asked Wright of Adam.

Adam looked dejected, he was not happy that Nelson told the Commander about the pranks that Witmore and Philips had done. He also did not like the Major, in fact he hated him. He sighed, "I am sorry too, we never meant for it to get blown out of proportion." He knew that there was nothing else he could say unless he wanted to look for a new career. He hoped secretly that he would get a change to re-pay the Major someday.

"Good," said Wirght The childishness of this whole incident bothered him but he had a ship full of prisoners to deliver and he did not have time for a feud between the Marines and the regular navy.. "Major do you have anything to say?"

Madriani looked at Nelson and then to Adam. This Adam fellow was going to be a problem. "I accept you apology, and I too am sorry form causing you harm in sickbay. I was worried about my daughter." Madriani looked at Wright, "I am disappointed that this issue caused discomfort my men. They had a problem with me and they chose to attack all the marines with their childish pranks."

"Indeed, I too am disappointed by the pranks. These crewmen have been kind enough to tell me who is behind them and I will be dealing with them when we are finished here." Wright made eye contact with Madriani. "You must trust and allow me to deal with this. I do not want this feud to continue."

"Understood Sir," said Madriani.

"Now, is the matter successfully concluded," Wright asked. Everyone in the room indicated that it was over. "Very well." Wright turned to the two crewman. "You two are dismissed." Wright watched as they left and then turned to the Major. "Major, I have to admit that I am surprised to hear that you would bring harm to members of this crew, even in a moment of anxiety. I expect the Marine Commander to show more restraint."

A thousand nasty comments and suggestions for how the commander should just *shut up* came to the tip of Madriani's tongue. Anger welled up inside him, however, he held himself back. Shooting his mouth off at the Commander was not going to help this situation. "Yes sir. It will not happen again."

"I am glad to hear that," Wright said. "A note of this issue will be placed in your record Major and if anything like this happens again you will face formal charges."

"Understood sir."

"You may go Major," said Wright.

Bones, EHM, [NPC]
Ensign Lincoln Powel, Engineer, [NPC]

Stardate: 58204.21 1700

stardate: 58204.21 1700 =Sickbay=

After her lunch with Patia, Teilani had returned to sickbay for some follow up appointments. It was now a good time to really check out the performance of the new EMH.

“Computer activate EMH,” she said.

“Please state the nature of the em…..”. Sorry to interrupt Bones, Teilani said. “There is no emergency. I just want to see you at work if that is o.k.”

“Hmf, I thought you never asked Doctor, the EHM said. “But we are not in the Zoo here.”

At that time Crewman Lincoln came in to get his cast on his arm removed, which he had injured during a new Klingon holodeck game. His new found girlfriend Ensign Taylor was with him. Lincoln appeared a bit stressed. Bones seemed to notice his apprehension.

"Lt Powell? Did you follow Doctor Dane’s advice and take it easy last night?"

Lincoln looked at Taylor. "Did I?"

Taylor looked away quickly with a slight blush on her face. "I've always found medical to be an interesting profession." She looked around pretending to be interested in the surroundings but looking at Linc from the corner of her eye.

Teilani sat back on one of the bio beds an with an amused look on her face she followed the conversation. It looked like the EHM could handle himself quit capable. So Teilani stood up and walked to her office. There were still some reports to finish and she might even considering sending a letter to her brother.

Bones took her reply and processed it as any good EMH program would. "Maybe we'd better scan this arm before we remove this cast." He reached to the table and grabbed a tricorder and adjusted a setting. As he swept it over Lincoln's broken arm, he said to Taylor, "You have lovely eyes, Ensign, Contacts?"

Taylor smiled. "No," she said with a sweet smile. "I'm glad someone notices." She winked at Linc. She hoped he was jealous.

Bones frowned as he passed the tricorder over Lincoln's arm. "Hmmm...this should have been completely healed by now, Mr Powell. You must have put some weight resistance on this last night despite Doctor Dane’s orders?"

Lincoln sheepishly nodded his head, glancing at Teilani’s office. "You won't rat me out now will you, Bones?"

The EMH smiled and winked back at him . "Well, I really should understand exactly what you were doing to stress this arm, so that I can better prescribe a treatment. But it doesn't by necessity have to be in my official notes."

Lincoln stole a glance at Taylor. He didn't feel a need to disclose their intimate gymnastics of the previous evening. He was beginning to think the EMH might even get some kind of vicarious thrill hearing of their escapades. He decided to try to answer the EMH's question by saying, "I did do some situps and pushups I guess."

Bones looked at Taylor with an eyebrow raised. "And did you hold his ankles, Ensign?"

Taylor smiled and nodded slowly. "I guess there will be no more arm wrestling for you, young man." She tisked him. "Though you weren't much of a challenge." She winked. "I guess we're off for football on the holodeck tonight than, huh?"

Lincoln shrugged his shoulders at the EMH. "It doesn't feel too bad, Doc. Can't you just leave the cast on a bit longer?"

Bones frowned, either at Lincoln's question or at knowing neither of them were going to part with any juicy details of the night before. "That won't do any good, I'll just have to reapply a new one." The EMH turned to Taylor. "You're welcome to stay and watch, ensign."

Lincoln grabbed her left hand. "Please stay." he asked her.

Taylor rolled her eyes and smiled. "I'll stay if it'll make you feel better." She squeezed his hand reassuringly. "Last time I had this done to me I was hang gliding off the coast of Hawaii. The good ol' days."

Doctor Bones had only been operational the last six weeks. Doctor Dane, Ops and the Engineering department all had a good look at the program before signing off that it was functional and suitable to spell Teilani from her duties. But still, the Zion crew was for the most part a remarkably hardy and healthy crew. Removing this cast and resetting Lincoln's broken arm was easily the most significant medical procedure the EMH had had to perform yet on anyone on this ship. Something they had all agreed weeks ago the EMH was competent to perform. In fact, they had agreed it was competent to perform much more intensive and invasive medical procedures. Still, Lincoln felt a lot like a guinea pig right now.

Doctor Bones grabbed a laser scalpel. "Now, this really shouldn't hurt." he said as the laser powered up and he brought it closer to Lincoln's cast. "Might feel a little heat. Let me know if you smell any burning flesh though." He said as an afterthought.

Taylor raised her eyebrows as she felt Linc's grip grow tighter. She lean close to his ear. "He's just trying to scare you. Relax or you'll pass out." She smiled at him. This didn't bother her at all. She was always an active child. She had so many bumps, bruises, stitches, casts, etc. that her parents didn't think she would last to adulthood.

Bones, being a sophisticated EMH with great receptors, smiled as it overheard her soothing words to Lincoln, but otherwise did not let on he'd eavesdropped on them. Bones was pulling Powell's chain at any rate. Bones expertly sliced through the cast with one hand, supporting Lincoln's arm with the other. Then Bones pulled the laser back and asked Taylor to support Lincoln's arm. Bones then removed the cast. "I'll discard this and be back with the new one in a minute." Bones left the room leaving Lincoln and Taylor alone. Lincoln looked into Taylor's eyes. "Thanks for baby-sitting me, Tay."

Taylor giggled. "I'm just provide moral support for a good friend. I'm sure you would do it for me." She smiled. "Maybe we should tone it down a little though. We don't want you to have to do this again. It's definitely not Disneyland."

Lincoln flexed his fingers gingerly, like he expected a lot of pain. He smiled. "Hey, it doesn't feel so bad." He tried to make a fist, testing it out, and instantly regretted it as he felt a sharp twinge halfway up his forearm. "Spit! That hurt." he whined.

Taylor held back a laugh. "Yep," she said simply. "Going to take a while to heal. I should know. I've done that to myself at least a dozen times. It's a wonder I can still move my arms. You're a big boy. You'll live." She kissed him softly on the lips.

Lincoln kissed her back a little less softly, and held her close with his good wing. Between breaths he mumbled the words of a song he'd heard long ago. "If loving you is wrong I don't want to be right."

Taylor smiled as she kissed him back. "We're suppose to be toning this down, lover boy." She pulled away quickly when she heard something behind her. "Welcome back, Doc." She smiled at him as he re-entered the room.

Bones smiled at both of them as his program processed the mood in the room. "Miss me? Or maybe I should go away and come back later?"

Lincoln shook his head. "Please, can you scan the arm again? I think I tweaked something a second ago, flexing my fingers, I felt a twinge up here -" and he pointed with his good hand at a point halfway up the arm.

Bones frowned but set the new cast down and picked up the tricorder again and scanned his arm. "There's a little internal bleeding - the muscle's still torn where the bone fragmented. It will take a little longer for the muscle to heal than the bone, Ensign. Try and refrain from flexing your fingers for a couple of days, please?"

"Sorry, Doc." Lincoln said.

"Oh, you don't need to apologize to me," Bones said. "Just stay off this arm and rest this hand for two days."

Bones proceeded to place the new cast on Lincoln's arm. "Do I need to cast your hand as well, or can you keep it stable?"

"I promise," Lincoln said.

"Very well then." Bones said.

"Do you need a physical, Ensign Makani?" Bones asked when he'd finished with Lincoln's cast. "I'd be happy to give you a full exam if you have the time?"

Taylor's eyes widened. "You know, that's ok. I mean I love spending some quality time here with you, Doc but...maybe another time, huh?" She turned to Linc. "Are you ready?"

Lincoln nodded and almost jumped off the bio bed Bones had him sitting on. "Yes, yes. I think we're already late for a briefing or something. We'd better get going. Thanks, Doc Bones!"

Bones shrugged its shoulders. "Another time then." And waited until they'd left sickbay before deactivating himself.

Back from her lunch with the doctor, Zoei settled into her work quickly. She completed several reports and forwarded them to Commander Wright. The comm system sounding interrupted her train of thought. "Lieutenant Zoei, you have a message coming in from Betazid."

Stomach tightening, Zoei answered, "I will take it in my office."

"You will be connected in just one moment, Lieutenant."

Zoei shifted in her chair. Both feet settled firmly on the floor, her back straight, she smoothed her hair from her face. There could be only reason she could have an incoming message from Betazid. She exhaled slowly, puffing her bangs away from her forehead with her breath. Her stomach was so knotted she was afraid she was going to be sick.

Seconds ticked by as she waited. She could hear them clicking away on her chronometer. Glancing down at her desk, she noticed her fingers were tangled in each other. A throat cleared, grabbing her attention.

"Father, I didn't see you on my console." He was pale, the crow's feet by his eyes standing in sharp relief. It had been too long since she had seen him. Age was sneaking up on him, or today's letter hit a little close to home.

"That is obvious, Little One," Patrio chuckled. "Do you need to unwind your fingers before you can talk to your Papa?"

Without a conscience thought, Zoei looked at her fingers again. They were clenched together so tightly the knuckles were white. She laughed at the ease with which her father saw through her. She separated her hands, and then straightened her fingers. She reached for the Silly Putty, a child's toy from 20th Century Earth, which was resting on her desk. The cool putty in her fingers helped her center herself as she looked back at the console. "They are unwound now, Daddy. I have been a little tense today."

"I know, I know. Your letter was quite clear in conveying your emotions." The gauntlet was down, the subject she wasn't sure she was ready to face, even though she was the one to bring it up, was at hand. "Patia, I hope you know we haven't kept this information from you to deliberately hurt you?"

"I do know that, Daddy. However, I am not a little girl anymore. This is something that has weighed on my mind since I was a child. It is just too much to wonder about when someone knows the answers to my questions." Zoei twisted the silly putty in her hands, pulling and tugging before crushing it into her a small ball.

"Patia, before we talk about what happened to Lucio, your mother and I want you to understand why we didn't talk to you about this sooner. We are not trying to deny your feelings on this, but this has been a very sore spot for us as well as you. Not only did we have the loss of our daughter's bonded mate, but we also had to face the fact that you knew about it before we received the missive from Lucio's parents. As your parents, that was the hardest part of all that happened to handle. You were such a tiny, little thing, barely 9 years old the night you woke screaming. We held you and rocked you as you sobbed. Over and over, we reassured you that it was just a dream. Over and over you cried, screaming Lucio's name. When you were finally fully awake, you said you had the worst nightmare. You talked of seeing Lucio in a small room, and of the pain he was in. Even after you were awake, you kept breaking down. You told us Lucio was dead. We told you it was just a dream. I can't remember what finally settled you down, but it was such a long night, we were just so relieved when you finally calmed enough to go to sleep." Patrio's eyes were teary. He brushed the back of his hand across the bridge of his nose and under his eye. Blinking rapidly, he shifted in his chair.

"Imagine our shock when we received the missive from the Deinei's. We saw it before you did. There are parts of it, you have never seen. After our talk today, your mother will send it to you, so you can read it all for yourself. The first detail that stood out to us was the date of Lucio's death. Your mother and I looked at each other and we said in unison 'that night'. Little One, it was the night you had woken, screaming for Lucio. As much as we hurt for the Deinei's, as much as we grieved your loss, the harshest reality we had to face was our darling girl and the fact that you knew when it happened. Do you understand the significance of this, Patia? Do you?" Patrio's voice changed, raising an octave and growing louder.

The timbre of his voice reverberating through her, Patia nodded. Watching her father, she could feel his pain. Her heart squeezed in her chest, making her breathing harsh and raspy.

"Patia, the reality of this was, we had a child who had experienced a terrible trauma. The other reality of this was, that same child was only 9 years old and had definitely experienced her first truly empathic encounter. Culturally, Patia, this isn't something to be proud of or something to celebrate. Historically, children who have that first empathic experience before they are in their mid-teens develop problems as they age. It is often a sign of someone being mentally unbalanced. We were more concerned about guiding you through this situation, protecting you, preserving the rest of your life for you, then telling you the gory, grisly details."

"Patia, do you forgive us? Can you forgive for caring more about what we thought was the bigger issue than what you thought was the larger concern?"

"Oh, Daddy," Patia sobbed. "Of course, I can forgive you. I am not angry with you, I have never been angry with you for what happened. And, I am not asking what happened today because of anger."

"We didn't think you asked out of anger, Little One. However, we know we have done things that haven't been normal in our quest to keep you safe. There were several reasons behind most of our decisions, but that didn't really make it any easier on you."

Patia leaned forward, propping her chin on her hands. She tipped her head, leaning her check into her palm. "Daddy, what is done is done. I just want to know what happened to Lucio."

Heaving a sigh, Patrio leaned back in his chair. He pinched the bridge of his nose between his forefinger and thumb. Patia smiled as she watched him, the movement one she had completed often enough herself as she was contemplating something difficult to think about.

Without looking up, Patrio began, "Lucio died while I was serving as Ambassador. As you may or may not remember, it was a time of political strife back home. Tensions were high for a long, long time. Decisions were made that were not popular with everyone back home. It was a time where manipulation and corruption were not uncommon. Occasionally, bribes were offered. They were refused. Threats followed. They were ignored. By the time this situation was coming to a head, Mother and I weren't terribly concerned about it. You were safe with us on Earth. Michelio was at the academy. We didn't really see a way they could get to us. It never entered our thoughts someone would try to sway me by going through Lucio."

Patrio leaned forward in his chair, his posture almost an exact replica of Patia's. "Lucio was abducted from his yard, snatched mere feet from his mother's watchful eyes. We know two people were involved. There was a diversion in the back of the house. It sounded as though an animal was injured and caught in their back garden. Selenia Deinei went from the front yard around to the back to see the cause of the noise. There was nothing there. When she came back to the front, Lucio was gone. A series of demand letters followed. The responsible individuals wanted certain communications made to me. In turn, those communications were to be relayed to important parties on Earth. To this day, we don't know if they were impatient or never intended for us to have the chance to meet these demands. Communications were slower then than they are now. The first communication we received at all was the one from Selenia and Christio, informing us if Lucio's death. They said his body had been found a mere 36 hours after his disappearance, and just 4 hours after the first demand was received."

Patrio looked into Patia's eyes. "The rest of this is ugly, Little One. If you want me to continue, I will, but this isn't going to be easy for you to hear."

"Tell me," Patia whispered.

He pressed his face into his hands. When he spoke next, his voice was low, and very husky. "When they found Lucio, he had been dead approximately 25 hours. He was dumped in a neighbor's back garden. His hands and ankles had been tied. He had struggled mightily against his bindings. The abrasions went through his skin, clear to the bone. His skin was mottled with burns. Patia, the child had suffered. His fingers were broken. Toenails had been pulled from his toes. He suffered tortures no one can appreciate. His death was a blessing when it happened." Patrio looked up. Tears tracked down his cheeks.

"A short time later, one of the people responsible for Lucio's death was found. It had been someone who was obviously not the brains of the operation. Marcio Rogeroi didn't have the ability to figure out how to get out of a paper sack, as they used to say. However, he was a big, strong man and was quite good at following directions. He was tracked down at home. He made some excuse about using the restroom. The next thing they heard was the thud of his body hitting the bathroom door. He had gone to the restroom and had taken a poison pill, which killed him almost instantly. A thorough search of his home turned up nothing of consequence, other than a note signed by Willio Masoni. Do you remember Willio?"

Patia shook her head. Her pulse was racing, her heartbeat throbbing in her ears. She was having an emotional overload. It was more difficult than she had thought it would be, hearing the details of Lucio's death. Knowing one of his killers was dead didn't bring her any sense of relief. She was almost angrier with him because he had taken the easy way out. He had tortured a child and was so weak; he couldn't live to see his judgment. Patia felt nothing but disgust for this spineless character.

"Willio was a key player here at home. He was unusual in his wickedness as he was only 20 when this all happened. He started early with his violence, and he took it to extremes to prove himself. Willio went underground when Lucio died and no one has officially heard from him since."

"What did he look like?"

"He was tall and lean. His hair was dark, and so were his eyes. His face and features were angular. Willio is very intelligent, sharp witted, with a dry sense of humor. To meet him, was to love him. His streak of coldness was buried deeply and well hidden. He embodied evil. Along with the Deinei's missive, I have a log of information. All of that will be forwarded to you from your mother today. Once you have it, you can review all the information we have ever had. After you have, let me know what your questions are. I am sure you have many, but most of them will best be answered by reviewing the facts, not listening to an old man's dithering."

"Thank you, Daddy. I know this wasn't easy for you and I appreciate it. I also am grateful that Mother will be sending me the information. I want to touch it with my own hands, see it with my own eyes. Daddy, do you ever hear from Selenia or Christio?"

"Yes, Little One, we have stayed in touch. Even though you and Lucio were never able to marry, they still feel toward you as they would toward a daughter. They are quite proud of your service."

"Could I contact them? Or would that be too painful for them?"

"Contacting them would be wonderful, Patia. They would appreciate that, I am sure." Patrio shifted in his chair. "How are you feeling, Patia?"

"I am tired, Daddy. I feel as though I have run miles and miles. Emotionally, I am drained."

"Humor your father, Patia. Go to your quarters, dim the lights, and go to bed. This is a lot of information to take in. You will best assimilate it while you are asleep. Tomorrow will be a fresh day and you will be ready to deal with the information from your mother."

"I think that will be best, I feel like I could sleep for days. Thank you for telling me what happened. It doesn't make it go away, but it does take away a lot of the questions."

"Good night, Patia. Rest well. Mother sends her love to you. She said to tell you to sit down with some peanut butter cookies before you sleep." Patrio winked at his daughter and they chuckled together.

"Mother does know best, doesn't she? Peanut butter cookies can fix anything." Patia smiled.

Sadness edged Patrio's eyes. "Yes, they can fix almost anything, Patia. It is time for this emotional, old man to go to bed also. Promise me you will not stay and work tonight, but will go back to your quarters and rest."

"I promise, Father. I will go as soon as we say our good byes."

"I am glad I have your promise, Patia. I would hate to hear that you dealt with your pain by burying it in work." Patrio raised his eyebrow at her.

"I would never do that, Father," Patia teased.

"Little One, it never pays to pull your father's leg. Good night, child."

"Good night, Daddy."

The console went blank. Patia tidied a few stray items on her desk. She tucked the silly putty away. Pushing her chair away from her desk, she rose slowly. Patia crossed her office. Pausing in front of the door, she said, “Computer dim lights." The room faded into darkness as the door slid open. She passed through the doorframe, headed for her quarters.

=Riaan’s Quarter’s=

Riaan had a freshened up as she was waiting to hear from Teilani about dinner. Riaan had promised the doctor that she wouldn’t over do it and decided the best place was in the holodeck. Riaan waited for Teilani to contact her she so she could tell her to please meet her outside the holodeck.

Riaan was feeling pretty good other then a slight headache but Teilani already told her that would go away it was due to the head injury that she had received. It was going to feel good getting away from her quarters for a bit and stretch her legs. Riaan waited patiently for Teilani to contact her.

Teilani to Riaan, I will be visiting you in 5 minutes

Understood I will meet you in front of the holodeck, Riaan out.

Riaan excited her quarters to proceed to the holodeck and awaited Teilani’s arrival. A few minutes later Teilani arrived at the holdeck.

Riaan had already had this preprogrammed when she joined the ship and wanting to be close to home at times, remember where and who she was.

Riaan and programmed Rutia IV to load before entering the holodeck a new whole world within awaited Teilani. Riaan was hoping she was going to like what she saw. Riaan usually never allowed others into her world yet tonight was special and Teilani was about to be the first person that she was going to allow and enter her world as the two entered the holodeck. Riaan never allowed herself to open up about herself or what Rutia IV was like this was going to be Riaan’s first time in all her life.

=Holodeck=

As Riaan and Teilani entered the holodeck it changed, a round ancient dome was the centre attraction surrounded by many settlements on the out skirts of the city. Cobbled streets led to the dome with small shops clustered close together along with some homes. There were no lights on the street just the lights coming from within the people’s home guided you to the dome at night. Most shops were closed.

This was the first meeting place that the Anasta, the Rutians and the Federation meet to discuss the unrest between the two parties. The Anatas were holed up in a cavern deep below the surface of Rutia IV mostly buried and no longer accessible. Inside the dome was the restaurant that Riaan was headed for. Streets were busy with shoppers looking for the best deal they could find. The market was fairly busy. Slowly Riaan and Teilani weaved their way through the crowd to the dome and entered.

As they entered inside the dome written on a scroll hung on a wall proudly was the history that took place in 2367. The Ansata had attempted to bring the Federation into the conflict by abducting Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher from the Enterprise-D. Their plans were successful and the Anasta received Federation recognition. A painting of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher hung on the wall along with the story of many centuries yet still not forgotten to the people of Rutia IV. This was a reminder to the people of Rutia IV of the sacrifices of their ancestors of many centuries ago. There were also several more interesting paintings slightly cracked with age and scrolls hung on the wall written in a language already forgotten by most, slightly covered by dust and dirt blown in when someone entered the dome. One of the paintings actually depicting the caverns that the Anatas were holed up in and inaccessible by the Rutian Government. Several lives were lost during that uprising.

Things had changed drastically since 2367. There were still several high ranking dignitaries that still lived in luxury within the confines of the dome. Most dignitaries ate in their quarters and had their meals delivered. They had their own servants to tend to their every need not having to lift a finger.

Also inside the dome were more shops for those that were better off and wealthy and money not an issue. Also a large meeting room set aside for town meetings to discuss official business.

The dome was made with various colored stained glass and intricately joined by a gold design. On the stain glass also on certain panes history was depicted intricately in making it appear as if the glass was all one, yet it wasn’t. The sun shone through lighting the main centre of the court yard. The dome was the most luxurious and beautiful landmark found on Rutia IV and the mostly costly. It had all the best that money could buy building the dome.

Several merchants inside was discussing business out of the heat. Riaan headed over to the restaurant and proceeded in.

Several tables had merchants and people sitting around drinking and eating trying to get the best barter they could get for their merchandise.

Inside the restaurant large, long wooden tables that appeared to be from medieval time as the humans referred to with wooden benches that were close together and could seat several people. Near the back of the room were round wooden tables and a keg as a base below holding the table up with wooden chairs. Luxurious chandeliers hung from the ceiling with gold candelabrums which were intricately placed along the side walls. The floor was made from a dark green marble like the rest of the dome.

The plates were ceramic with beautiful gold leaf trim intricately designed throughout the plate. The mugs were ceramic again with solid gold leaves intricately designed throughout. The silverware was made from pure silver and intricately designed. The steins were also pure silver. A tall yet intricately designed glass jug held the ale.

In its time this restaurant was one of the most beautiful restaurants on Rutia IV over time it was showing its age but still offered luxury and beauty. Some of the people were better dressed then some. This was the best place on Rutia IV to eat.

The smell of farmers and various races meeting mingled in the room, ventilation not the best. Crude yet simple were the environment inside the restaurant, nothing overly fancy. The shops and the dignitaries quarters were more lavished, and guests quarters if one had the money they could afford to stay in the dome overnight if not then a room above one of the local taverns, loud and noisy and extremely difficult to get any sleep due to the brawls occurring as some patrons got out of hand and the loud music coming from below, besides yelling, screaming, and arguing patrons.

Riaan headed towards the back near one of the vacant tables. This is the best place to eat on Rutia IV they have the best meal around and well worth the cost hope you are hungry Teilani, asked Riaan.

“It seems to be quite an interesting place. But tell me Riaan, I could not help notice the scroll at the entrance, since Rutia IV is part of the Federation what made you decide to join the Maqui?”

A tall slender, stocky, muscular servant came over and introduced himself, “I am Kyril I will be your servant tonight what may I get you ladies?” He was dressed in a long white gown with a gold sash tied around his waste and another draped from the left shoulder down with a fancy design embroidered down the front in gold lace. He wore sandals.

“I shall have your beef medium rare with potatoes baked and yakatar with a coffee,” replied Riaan.

Kyril looked at Teilani and asked, “What may I get you?”

Teilani looked at the menu. “I will have some lemon chicken salad please and a glass of mineral water.”

“Very good ladies, he said as he walked away.

“Now Riaan, Teilani said, you have not answered my previous question.”

After my prior job before joining the Maqui I decided that I would prefer something less dangerous and I heard that the Maqui was always looking for new recruits. I have more lives then a cat as you humans refer to and have had many brushes with death and before my luck ran out I then decided to join the Maqui. I left my home planet some time ago and haven’t been back since. I was what some refer to as a mercenary after I left my home planet a good friend spoke to someone he knew and I was accepted on the Panther, they were always looking for good fighters and this was perfect it enabled me to hone my skills further but I don’t talk about that anymore that life is now behind me and here I have started over. I was not interested in following my parent’s footsteps but I needed to find my own path. I have not spoken to them since I had left I have become a disappointment in their eyes. Riaan was beginning to feel uncomfortable as she reflected back to her life style and not being close or having any friends having dinner with one of the crew was forbidden and Riaan began to get fidgety.

Teilani watched patiently how Riaan became uneased. "It is alright Riaan."I will not ask any further."

Kyril came back with the silverware wrapped in fine linen and placed them on the table accordingly then discreetly left. Five minutes later he arrived back with the dinners and placed them in front of Teilani and Riaan and awaited a response quietly about their dinner.

Riaan looked at Kyril, “perfect not overly done.”

Kyril bowed in appreciation that everything was fine without speaking as it was customary to do so. He then waited for Teilani’s response in silence as he stood to the side.

Teilani looked at her salad. It looked delicous and fresh. "Thank you sir, it looks wonderful."

Kyril bowed again and then left. Leaving Riaan and Teilani quitely enjoying their dinner.

Sarik looked at the newly acquired data. He ad thoroughly researched the device they had encountered at while under attack. The data was difficult but not impossible. However studying carefully how the device actually works would take some more days. Sarik had worked on it since they left the station, but those few days were barely enough to catogorize the data. He had some clues based on his research with mr Zent, but it was only based on several hypothesis.

It was quite hard to orgnize the data since most of the records have been hard to obtain. However he found some interesting data regarding the 'ghosts' they were no ghosts, they were energy signatures that could tap into the systems and disrupt minor electronic systems. THey were not powerful enough to cause any real trouble, but being poltergeists they were. Besides that there attracted to a special energy source.

Sarik knew that he had done a large job, but wasnt close to an end yet. Though the problem was solved his curiousity encouraged him to get more out of this.

"Good day, Sarik, how are you?"

"I am normal crewman, what is your bussiness here?"

"Well i hve completed the interviews you have asked me to conduct with some crew. They were all curious about your results."

"Thank you crewman, that will be all."

"Acknoweldged sir, anytime." When the man passed the door Sarik could hear him say "jerk" and arched an eyebrow.
