=Teilani's quarters=

Teilani woke up she was a little stiff. It seemed that her bed was becoming lumpier day by day. She sat on the edge, stretching and yawning. Picking up a robe from the floor and putting this on, she walked to her seating area. Over to the replicator she ordered: “Coffee, Jamaican blend double strong, double sweet.” Holding the mug in her hands and inhaling the fragrance she looked out the window, seeing the stars and a piece of the upper pylon from Qultuq. Then suddenly she saw a falling star, quickly she made wish.

Putting her coffee mug on the table she headed for the shower, only to get the scare of a lifetime. Instead of warm rays it was freezing. “Cold, cold, cold, she muttered, jumping up and down in the shower.

Towelling herself dry she put on a clean uniform and looked at her self in the mirror. Not only starting the morning with a cold shower but she also had a bad hair day. “Ah well, she needed to see a hairdresser quickly, cutting her hair would be easier to maintain it but for now braiding it was the only option. Luckily she was in no rush, sickbay was empty and the EMH could handle all little accidents etc.

Walking back to the seating area she asked : “computer are there any messages pending?” “2 messages pending,” the reply came. Teilani walked over to the wall console and accessed them.

The first one was from counsellor Zoei, asking her if they could meet for a follow up appointment. Teilani arched an eyebrow, a meeting for an hour and a half and after working hours. She wondered what Patia was planning. Hopefully she was not going to get into the sickbay incident. Teilani had already pushed this far away in the back of her mind.

“Computer send a message to counsellor Zoei confirming our today’s appointment for 1800hrs.

“Message sent.”

“computer display next message.” The next message was not a nice one. It was from her headnurse Ally, telling her that she had decided to leave the Zion and that she had accepted a new assignment back on Bajor.

“Oh swell, Teilani muttered, and where do I get another head nurse this quickly?” But she could not blame Ally, she knew that Ally wanted to be close to her family. Hopefully she had not yet left, cause Teilani wanted to say goodbye.

Finishing the last coffee, which was unfortunately cold, Teilani headed out the door, planning to tour the Zion again, as well as visiting Qultuq.

************ The day had passed quickly. Teilani had managed to catch Ally on her way back home and they had said their mutual goodbyes. Teilani was surely going to miss her. Putting some new lingerie and casual clothing she had purchased in her quarters it was time to go and meet the counsellor.

A quick strole and Teilani was at the counsellor office. She ran the doorchime. No answer, nothing. She hit the doorchime again. Then she decided to knock. It seems that each electrical system onboard the Zion was having a bad day.

=counselor's office=

The knock on her door startled her. She had been anticipating the arrival of the ever punctual Dr. Dane, but she had expected the door chime to ring. Something else must be going on now. A note to Lieutenant Silvio might just be in order.

Crossing to the door, she attempted to open it for her visitor. The first three attempts to open the door failed. Finally, the door slid slowly, painfully open. Dr. Dane stood on the other side.

"Good evening, Dr. Dane. Please come in," Zoei stepped back from the door.

“Good evening Patia, you wanted to see me,” Teilani said.

"I did want to see you. I apologize for the delay in requesting this appointment. I should have done it much sooner." Gesturing to the couch she said, "Please have a seat. Would you like something to drink? Jamaican blend, double strong, double sweet?"

"Yes please," Teilani giggled as she walked over to the couch. "I think I need to change my recipe for coffee." She sat down on the couch, tucking her legs beneath her, making herself quit comfortable. She had never paid much attention to the counselor office, but it was a nice surrounding, calm, relaxing and the everlasting smell of gardenias.

"Occasionally, it is nice to have something about yourself that is predictable to others. At least with a drink choice, it works out to your benefit as well as theirs," Zoei chuckled. Stopping at the replicator on the way to her sitting area, she stated, "Jamaican blend, double strong, double sweet and raspberry ice tea with two raspberries." Picking up the steaming mug and the cold glass, she turned to the sitting area. Dr. Dane appeared more relaxed than she had seen in quite some time. It was a good sight to see.

"One Jamaican blend, double strong, double sweet," Zoei said as she handed the large mug to the doctor before settling herself into the chair at a right angle to the couch where Teilani was seated. She tucked her right foot beneath her and allowed her left leg to drape over the top of it.

"I hear Sick Bay is settling down a bit. How is that going?"

"it is going very well," Teilani said, taking a sip from her coffee. "I must admit I have a fine crew, despite all the technical failures lately. Unfortunately one of them left this morning.

"And how about you Patia, Teilani studied the counselor's face. "How have you been doin' since we docked. Have you been eating well."

"I am sorry to hear you lost one. Was there trouble at home? Or just an opportunity to move on?"

"Ally just wanted to stay closer to home, her parents needed some additional care, Teilani explained.

"I have been eating well, when I remember to eat. It is a minor little problem I have had off and on for years. I get very involved in what I am doing and the next thing you know, six hours have passed and I have missed at least one meal. I could have worse bad habits, I suppose," Zoei chuckled.

"Moving on to the reason why you are here, I think we should touch base about some things that have happened in Sick Bay. I asked that you come later in the day so that you wouldn't have to return to work after our meeting. Sometimes these sessions get a little raw and I didn't want to put you in a position where you needed to be professional right after you walk out the door. I have no doubt you could handle it, but I prefer to deal with the tougher issues when there is time to unwind afterwards, so to speak. I am referring to your two patients who became prisoners."

Teilani smiled "ah the sickbay incident, I passed out did you know that." Teilani looked in the distance, remembering. "You know Patia, it was really weird seeing two persons relating to the Kitty, it was as if I was back on the ship again, prior to my escape. They claimed being innocent, that they had nothing do to about it, but I knew what I saw."

"I do not doubt you saw what you said. I did hear you had passed out. That was the cause for my concern for you. It was bad enough living it the first time. Reliving it was undoubtedly more traumatic."

"I could not let them go as if nothing had happened. But now I wish I had never mentioned them. "I just wanted them to be brought to justice." Teilani felt tears stinging behind her eyes, she pushed them away. Nobody would ever see her cry.

"You understand you are not responsible for your deaths, don't you? And I mean deep in your heart of hearts. Because you reported them does not mean you are responsible for another crew members actions." Patia leaned forward and laid her hand on the arm of the couch. "Red, I hope you allow yourself to cry in private. There is no shame in tears and sometimes it brings healing."

"I know I am not responsible, not directly anyway. And as for the crying, Teilani looked at Patia, I have done that more then enough when I was little, hearing about my parents and baby brother's disappearance . I made myself a promise never to cry again. I know that a good cry brings healing and relief, but I am afraid that if I start I can not stop, so although I know it is wrong, tucking it away is better.

"Tucking it away will only hold it off, it will not stop it from coming. It may not be today, or in your near future, but there will be a day where it will happen. It will most likely strike you when you least expect it and are unprepared for it. That causes me a little worry for you. Having suffered a terrible loss at a young age, I know what it is like to go through your entire life walking on the fringe. There is fear of involvement because involvement means the possibility of loss and pain. There are coping mechanisms that make you feel like you are in control when you aren't totally. The only way to handle it honestly with yourself is to deal with the underlying issues and move forward. I want you to notice, Red, I didn't say move on. I don't believe anyone ever truly moves on from those life changing events, but they can move forward with them rather than being held back by them."

Teilani stood up and walked towards the window, crossing her arms. "I understand what you mean Patia, but I can not do that alone. Or to be more honest I am afraid to. I realize that I must accept this it forms a part of me shaping me to who I am today.”

Teilani walked back taking her same position on the couch. It felt good talking to Patia. She seemed to be the only one who understood her.

"You don't have to do this alone. You have several options. First, we could meet to work through this. If you are not comfortable with that, for whatever reason, I could help you arrange some intensive sessions with the counselor on Qul Tuq next time we are back here. I do not feel you have time for that before we leave the station this time. Finally, and this is not something I feel you need at this time, a brief leave could be arranged where you could undergo even more intensive, or immersion, therapy. What you have gone through has shaped you. In order to survive it and become successful, you had to draw strength from it."

Patia leaned back in her chair and reached for her glass of tea. It was empty. Rising from her seat, Zoei looked at Dr. Dane's mug. "Would you like a refill?"

Yes i would like a refill please." Teilani let Patia's reply sink in before she answered. I would rather work with you about this, she paused........... I trust you Patia. And I rather talk to you than some stranger on the station."

Taking the mug from Teilani's hand, Patia walked to the replicator. "Jamaican blend, double sweet, double strong. Raspberry iced tea" The drinks filled quickly. She carried them back to the sitting area and handed the mug back to Teilani. "I am honoured by your trust. Since we have already been here over an hour tonight, I suggest we decide on a time to meet again. We can start fresh on a new day. How do you feel about that idea?"

"I would like that very much," Teilani said smiling while accepting the hot mug. “Maybe we can have lunch together or so or maybe share a holodeck program.”

"Good. I think we should plan on some sessions here to deal with the issues, but I would enjoy having lunch together as well. I am open for lunch tomorrow if you like. Once we are back underway, we can begin our sessions, as long as you have no objections?"

“I have no objections at all. Teilani stood up, taking the mug with her. I will contact you tomorrow for lunch”.

"That will be nice. Have a good evening," Zoei nodded to the doctor as she left the office.

Together with the EMH Teilani was working frantically to get Riaan back to the living again.

"I don't understand Teilani sighed, she won't wake up, why."

"You asking me Doctor Dane," The EMH snarled, "I don't know I'm not a telepath."

Teilani rolled her eyes and studied at the irregular brain patterns, and then slowly thanks to the meds, it seemed to be going fine. The EMH handed her a hypo with tri-ox and pardextrine.

Pardextrine was recently a new drug Teilani had received from the supply depot. Basically used for head injuries. She pressed the hypo towards Riaans neck and adjusted the medical output readings.

Riaan saw herself lying on the bio bed it was weird how could this be. Slowly Riaan began to come through she felt like she had died and was brought back to life, once again. Riaan kept clutching and clawing trying to drag herself out from the beyond, as she lay in limbo between two worlds. She used all her strength that she could muster to pull herself out, as she struggled slowly to the top of the void.

"Ensign, Teilani said. "Open your eyes. Come one open your eyes."

Slowly Riaan was getting closer to the top of the void where she lay in limbo, but she wasn't sure for how long. She slowly began to open her eyes, her head felt as if it was about to explode and her eyes were about to pop out of her skull.

"Computer, dim the lights by 5%. Immediately the surrounding light was lowered so Riaan needed not to blink.

"Stay down," Teilani ordered, "you have had a bad accident in the Cargo Bay, don't you remember?"

Riaan looked at Teilani with a blank look she had no clue what happened or where she was or who this person was that was asking her, "don't you remember."

"Can you tell me what day it is?"

Not knowing Riaan never said a word, she was lost and confused. She had no clue what this person was even talking about.

"Do you know your name? ", Teilani asked.

Again Riaan never said a word she didn't even know her own name.

Teilani looked the EMH. "Are you thinking what I am thinking, she asked. He nodded, "temporary amnesia."

Riaan continued looking at the two puzzled trying to understand what was going on hoping for some sort of explanation, anything. Teilani sat herself down on the bio bed. She looked calm and with a relaxing voice she started to explain. "Your name is Ensign Riaan. You are onboard the USS Zion. While you were working in the Cargo bay some crates tumbled and you were hit by one of them." "Do you understand? This caused a small swelling of your brain that is why you can not remember." Teilani took Riaan's hands in her's. "Relax, everything is going to be fine. Your memory will return in maybe a few hours maybe a day. It is not permanent" "You have to remain here for a while then I can monitor how you are doing o.k. You don't have to worry everything will be fine." "Who are you? Am I supposed to know you?, Riaan looked puzzled at Teilani. "Yes you know me. My name is Teilani Dane. I'm the ships physician." "How did I meet you, were we friends or what", asked Riaan in a pleading yet petrified tone in her voice not sure of anything. "We met a few months ago here on the Zion. You are the ships operations officer." Teilani replied. My head it feels like it is about to explode and my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my skull. "I know Teilani said. That is an effect of the injury. It will pass, just give it time. Don't force yourself to remember." "Do I have any family, children or anything, she said, again not sure of herself. Riaan never knew what to think and felt so empty inside not knowing who she was or how she even came onboard the USS Zion. "Don't ask too much. I will give you something to sleep. Lay back down and close your eyes. You are save here." Teilani took a hypo from the tray and filled it with a mild sedative and a sleeping cocktail.

Adam and Nelson walked down Zion's corridors. They had asked Dr Dane if they could have the afternoon off. There were no patients in sickbay anymore and if they were needed Dr Dane would surely call them.

"How are you ribs," Adam asked. "Well they are still sore but it is bearable," Nelson replied. He was not happy at all, he wanted to get even with the Marines and especially with Major Madriani.

Both men entered the messhall and took a seat in the corner. Nelson rubbed his rib cage after he sat down. "It is still a little stiff. Your eye look awful man."

"Yeah I am so tired of having Marines on the Zion. Things were a lot more peaceful without them.

"A lot less stressful too," added a medical technician who was sitting behind them. "I was in sickbay when it happened too. Totally unnecessary. His kid wasn't even in any serious danger."

"Hi Lila," said Nelson. "We didn't see you sitting there. Heck of a day at work huh?"

"What gets me," interrupted Adam, "is that he did not even apologize. I can appreciate his anxiety for his little brat but he did not need to be that way."

"That is the way Marine's are," said an engineer sitting at another table. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be eves dropping but you were talking sort of loud."

Adam shrugged, "I do not really care. Marines are dangerous."

The engineer stood up and waved at another one entering the room. "Hey Whitedog over here."

Ensign Whitmore waved back at Ensign Paulis, he really hated being called Whitedog. His name was Whitmore not Whitedog. He had stopped in to get a quick bite to eat before he went back to engineering. Chief Silvio had given him quit some tasks to perform before the Zion shipped out again. He took a bowl of noodles from the replicator and walked over to Paulis who was talking to Adam and Nelson.

"He guys, ready for our poker game tonight?" he said while sitting down. "Jeez Adam, that's quite a shiner you have, did Dr Dane have a bad day?" Craig chuckled. He knew the pretty little Doc would never do such a thing he was just teasing Adam.

Adam shook his head and he explained the incident in sickbay. "Man, I had never expected that from the Major, Craig said. "He probably had a bad day."

"Yeah, well his bad day does not require him to ruin mine." Adam said with a note of fury in his voice.

"Calm down Adam people are starting to look," said Nelson as he looked around the room. He did not see any marines in the room so he relaxed.

"Let them look." Adam glanced over at a table of operations officer having lunch.

"Sit down Adam," said Whitmore shouting like a fool is only going to get your nose broken. Whitmore gestured to the door where several marines had just walked in. The room got kinda quiet as they ordered food form the replicator and sat down.

"I have lost my appetite," said Adam as he got up. "I am going to go for a run.

"Hey wait up. I'll go with you, " said Nelson as he got up. "See ya guys at the poker game tonight.

"Yeah later," Paulis said.

Whitmore watched as the nurses left. "Too bad for those guys. There are good guys, for nurses." said Whitmore as he watched the marines eat.

"Yeah, not much we can do about it," said Paulis "That is what way marines are and they will be with us for a while.

"Yeah," said Whitmore who was clearly distracted.

"Hey Craig, you listening to me? What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing," said Whitmore as he finished his meal. "Let's get back to work."

One little white lie "

Stardate: 58204.20 1330

58204.20 1330 ==Security== Samantha Carter entered the brig trying to find out which of the prisoners were telling the truth or were lying. Not an easy task.

"Hey gorgeous, one of the feds yelled at her. Wanna play? Sam ignored him which resulted in some bad language. You're not paying attention to me gorgeous", the prisoner said again.

Sam turned around standing before the forcefield. She smiled, "I never pay attention to braggers."

The prisoner snarled. "You're thinking about how you 're going to kill me.

The federation betrayed you, Sam said. And look where it lead you. In the brig on its way to Rura Pente.

The prisoner laughed, "Well gorgeous we ain't there yet. Lots can happen during that time.

Sam laughed. You squandered your gift and your talents to be a lackey of the spineless Federation. So I am giving you a choise. Take it or leave it."

You can either join us or spent the next years in an agony booth at Rura Pente. Take your time, think about it."

"I do not need to think the reply came. What we did we did for justice."

Sam said nothing in reply, offered no sign of encouragement or of disinterest. She had heard this story several times today. But for now all things considered, she was content to wait.

Sam passed the remaining holding cells untill she had reached the little interrogation room.

The next prisoner sat down at Carter's table. He was a simple looking young man, very quiet.

When prompted he said, "My name is Gordon Birkhoff, chief science officer, USS Lynx." he said politly.

Sam sat down. "Goodmoring Mr Birkhoff. I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances."

"Its alright." said Birkhoff respectfully.

"I will be blunt. The only reason we are having this conversation is for me to find out if you are lying. If you are, you will be spending many years at Rura Penthe, if not you can stay on Qul Tuq or even join the Maquis. It is totally up to you.

"Of course I would be intersted in joining the Maquis. W-what would I have to do?"

"Let's start from the beginning. How did you end up on the Linx."

"Well, the Federation is getting desperate, I was drafted into service. I was just a computer systems technician on Earth."

"I see, how did you feel about that, being drafted. Let me rephrase that, how do you feel about the ideals of the Federation."

"I was against it." he said, with a nod.

"If and I mean if, we decide to accept you becoming a member of the Maqui. Can you tell me how you think you can make a difference. Are you prepared to use your skills for our benefit."

"Yes Ma'am, I am one of the best computer technicians around. I am sure I could work to make a difference for the...Maquis."

Sam saw a slight glimmer of hope or something else in Birkhoff eyes. She was not quit confinced about his honesty. "You hesitated there for a moment. You are sure you are telling me the truth?"

'Yes ma'am," he said, holding his head down, "sorry, this is all so sudden. Years of Federation brainwashing and now I have the opportunity to be free from that." he said, punctuating his statement with a big grin.

Sam smiled, "I understand. I will discuss your choise with my superior and we will let you know our decision before we leave the station." Sam waved towards to security guards who escorted Mr Birkhoff back to his holding cell.

Sam made some last notations at her padd, ready to give it to Melissa.

Sam walked back with Melissa having left Lieutenant Atwood and Northrop to their interviews.

Excuse me Ma'am, Sam asked. I would like to talk to you about Gordon Birkhoff.

"Yes?"

"He has asked if he could stay with us but I have my suspicions.

"Please explain?"

"Well he was awfully quick to change his mind when I made him this offer. I have the idea that he might be a spy pretending not to like the Federation. He is a computer tech and if we allow him to join, who knows what he will do."

Melissa thought about this situation and decided to interview Mr. Birkhoff herself.

"I don't know how I know but it is a gut feeling I have, and well normally I am never wrong.

"Put Birkhood in room 1 and I will talk to him."

"It's Birkhoff Ma'am," Sam said with a little smile around her lips. "I will escort him to room 1. She turned and walked back to the holding cells.

Melissa smiled. Sam obviously needed a bit of guiadance when it came to interviewing scumballs. "Lieutenant Carter, you will attend this interview with me."

"Yes Ma'am, thank you. Sam walked to Birkhoff's cell. "Mr Birkhoff so we meet again".

Birkhoff grinned, "Yes Ma'am, Its a pleasure." he said with a bow.

Sam used the wall console to deactivate the forcefield, holding her hand ready at her phaser. "You will be pleased to know that my boss has agreed to interview you further. So if you would care to step outside and walk to room 1."

"Yes ma'am" he said obediently following her order.

Melissa gave them a few moments while she looked over the PADD Sam had given her then she went into the interview room.

She did not smile and looked him right in the eyes. She could see it in his eyes right away. Those people who had genuinely wanted to join the Maquis showed it in their eyes and body language. This Birkhoff was only interested in saving his own hide. "Hello Mr. Birchwood. I understand you want to join the Maquis.?"

"The name's Birkhoff, and I want to join the..."

Melissa impatiently cut him off, "Whatever your name is. Tell me why you think you should be allowed to join us."

Birkhoff stammered, "T-the Federation is..mean, they hurt people. Besides, I can help you. My brother is a Maquis person too."

"I am having a hard time believing you," Melissa said with a icy cold voice." You were captured along with other Federation scumballs. I think you are pretty much a scumball too Mr. Birdhuff."

Birkhoff clenched his fist on the table and tensed up. After a moment exhaled and seemed more relaxed. He smiled and then looked over Melissa's shoulder, "Can I talk to the other nice security person?

"No, you are talking to me." anger flashed in her eyes as she stood up and blocked his view of Sam. "I want the truth from you." She condescendingly mimicked his voice "T-the Federation is ..mean, they hurt people." What kind of trash is that? You are listed as the Chief Science officer and that is all you can say is their mean? Perhaps you were all they could get on the Lynx? A sub-standard Science officer? Tell me something that will make we belive that you are not the lying, defective, hosebag Federation scum I think you are."

Birkhoff leaned back and put his palms behind his head and grinned, "You have something of an attitude problem ma'am. I just follow orders. I really do want to be in the Maquis. This ship would do just fine." He said with a glint of sarcasm.

Melissa did not believe it for a moment. This guy was too cool and calm. She shook her head. "Not today Mr. Birkhoff." She turned to Sam. "Put this one down for Rura Pente. The sooner we get this trash off our ship the better."

Birkhoff pounded his fist against the table top, suddenly he jumped up and ran toward Melissa. Melissa stepped aside and calmly hit Birkhoof with a short chop to the face. He landed on his back on the deck. He wiped away a trickle of blood that seeped from the corner of his mouth. He slumped to the floor and said, "Ok...ok...That's the way you want to play, I'm going to have to kill you later you know."

Melissa laughed at him. "Mr. Birdshit, I look forward to seeing you try." She nodded at two security guards who entered the room. "Take him away"

As two security officers came and pulled Birkhoff to his feet he turned to Sam Carter and said, "You are so pretty, I won't kill you unless I have to."

Before Sam could answer the two security officer hauled him from the room. Melissa smiled at Sam as she left the room rubbing the hand she hit Birkhoff with.

Sickbay

Teilani looked at major Madriani and his daughter both still sitting together on the biobed. She decided to keep the little girl in sickbay for a night just to be on the save side.

"Excuse me Doctor, Adam asked.

"Yes Adam what is it," Teilani responded. "I would like to lodge a complained against the Major Ma'am, Adam replied.

Teilani's face became serious. "Come into my office and close the door. Are you sure Adam, " she asked.

Adam followed her into her office. "Yes Ma'am, he had no reason to overreact in such a way. Marines think that they rule the world and what else more."

"You do understand that I will have to talk to him about it which might result in him getting a reprimand in his file."

"Yes Ma'am, Adam responded. "I have had enough of being pushed around by

them Marines. Not only today but also during the mission. We had difficulty of doing our job. Look he gave me a black eye and he bruised Nelson's ribs."

"Look he was only concerned for his daughter."

"I know doctor but even Marines and especially a MCO should learn to control himself." Adam continued.

"Very well then, Teilani said. "I will talk to the Major about this. Thank you Adam".

He nodded and headed back to his post. Teilani sighed filing an official reprimand was never easy. But in a way Adam was right, the Major had overreacted. On the other hand Teilani knew enough about the Major knowing thathis daughter meant everything to him. But she also was responsible for her own personnel so this was unavoidable.

Teilani stood up and walked back to the main sickbay. "Major, may I have aword with you please?"

Teilani walked back to her office, looking if the major was following. "Please Major sit down."

"Very well, doctor. What is on your mind?" Ryan asked. He didn't feel happy about having to leave Alice.

"Major I have a question for you", Teilani asked. "If you and your team are on a mission and you notice that one of your crew is ... how shall I say misbehaving himself, what do you do?"

"Depends." Ryan said. "most likely I will have him lectured by his squad CO or XO, or just make a note of it and have him notified of it. If its serious I will do it myself."

"So basically you say that you point out what he has done wrong and makes sure that that will not happen again. Even if you have to make a notation into this crewmembers personal file?"

"Basically yes." Ryan said calm.

"Major would you say that you respect people?" "Respect them for what theyare and how they act during their duties?"

"Normally I do." Ryan said. He didn't like the tone of this conversation. "What are you leading to Doctor."

"Then let me ask you this Major, why did you assault my crew?" Teilani raised her hand, let me finish Major. I realize that your daughter means the world to you. She is al you have. But you must also realize that as long as I am CMO sickbay is my domain. I will do everything in my power to make sure that patients are being cured, whether they are personal family or Zion crew. I will not ever allow fighting in sickbay."

"You as being a Marine commander should be able to control yourself and not act like a raving lunatic."

"Doctor you ordered those men to hold me down. They did not succeed. I did not think, that is not something you do in such a case. You act on instinct, they where in my way, I need them out of it. So I removed them." Ryan explained calmly. "Now that is a professional hazard for them. I would have thought they where prepared for such a situation."

They were prepared Major but you did not need to act so violently, we are not your enemy. Next time Major I will not be so tolerate and I will report you to Commander Wright. Now please do me a favour and apologize to my crew," Teilani said.

Ryan thought about it for a moment. He smiled "I can not do that." He raised his hand to silence her. "I did not do anything they weren't ready for if they had done their jobs. Now I'm sure they fine nurses, but then they should stick to it and stayed out of my way." Ryan was serious. "However for the sake of reason I am prepared to make a gesture." Ryan thought about it. "I don't know what kind of a gesture but I'm sure they will think of something."

"Just apologize to them Major, Teilani asked.

"No doctor, that's the only thing I won't do. If they want an apology they will have to come to me in person." He stood up. "O yes," Ryan added "I would appreciate it they talked to ME, when they have a problem with ME. I can be very reasonable. So THEY must come to me with their request for an apology" He took a breath "Good day dr. sorry if I make your life a living hell." Ryan nodded and walked back to his daughter.

Teilani sighed. "Major, she mumbled, you do not even know what a living hell is". Then she walked up to Alice and her father again. "Would you please move to the side Major Madriani, she said with a voice cold as ice. "Then I can do my job".

Jeff Westfall, Tactical Officer, [PST]

Stardate: 58204.20 1830

58204.20 1830

Quarters of Ensign Jeff Westfall=

Jeff Westfall sat in his quarters with the lights at 1/3 brightness and the temperature elevated to thirty-three degrees Centigrade. There was a relaxation track playing from the Zion's extensive music library. Jeff had just finished a routine shift, and returned directly to his quarters, after he had been relieved by the crewman on his opposite rotation. He spent a few minutes summarizing the activity, which consisted mostly of running intensive diagnostics of the U.S.S. Zion's many sensor arrays, trying to locate numerous anomalies that were showing up. There were reports of locked doors opening, doors opening when no-one was there, intermittent failures of environmental controls that kept crew's quarters at constant temperatures, to suit individual physiologies, lights not working, diagnostic equipment going "dead". It bothered him. As tactical officer it should.

He was trying to relax to "Sounds of the Seashore" with waves breaking over the rocks, and ebbing to the shore. Usually when he was feeling stressed, this was his "calm down" tool, and normally it worked. Tonight however, he had an uneasy feeling that he couldn't explain. It was a cold prickly feeling, he couldn't explain.

In his capacity as the Zion's Tactical Officer, Jeff was used to tracking multiple events and identifying "threats" of many kinds. It wasn't even a feeling of being "watched", that was routine in his job. As Tactical Officer, and hopefully, someday Chief Tactical Officer, he was paid to think quickly, calmly, rationally, and objectively. A split second's hesitation could cause the loss of the ship, and all hands aboard.

A shiver ran down his spine, as he closed his eyes, and saw the USS Bezar on the main view screen. His own disembodied voice informed Captain Hunter, "Sir, the USS Bezar has been *terminated* with no survivors. All it had taken was the Captain's order, and he had quickly fired four photon torpedoes into the ship, and the explosions were very visible on the main view screen as the rogue ship's warp core instantaneously breached, bringing the explosive interaction as matter met anti-matter. There was a blinding flash, and debris. Not even anything to collect.

Jeff felt suddenly uneasy. He decided to do something about it. He couldn't afford to become ill. He was the Senior Tactical Officer.

Dr. Dane, this is Tactical Officer Jeff Westfall. I hate to disturb you on your off time, but I don't feel "right" could I see you as soon as possible please, at your convenience?

"That's o.k. Mr Westfall, Teilani responded. "I’ am still in sickbay so drop by anytime."

Jeff quickly headed to sickbay. He definitely felt a bit under the weather.

"Hello Doctor, you look like you've had a day and a half, is everything alright?

Teilani smiled. "it has been quite a hectic day today Mr Westfall.”

“You look like you've been working *Far* too hard. ”Westfall continued “ Don't worry, I'm not going to "Rat out" the Chief Medical Officer...I might need a note from you to give the Captain re-assurance I'm not going mad".

The reason I thought I needed to see you, is that I just got off shift, And I've been feeling "Chilly Willies" going up and down my spine. I've currently got the environmental controls set at 33 degrees centigrade, and I'm *still* feeling cold. I can't explain it.

"Hm I see, I have hade more complaints like that", Teilani responded. "Please take a seat on biobed 4 and I will try to find out what the problem is."

Teilani took her scanner and ran it over Mr Westfalls body. At first glance there was nothing wrong, but some of the readings were a little off.

"Well Mr Westfall, there is nothing really wrong with you, but I will give you a booster with some vitamins just to be on the save side.

"Thanks Doctor, that'd be appreciated, I can't afford "Down Time" right now, with all the weird things going on around the ship, I don't like sedatives, because I've got to be "Spot On" all the time, in case of Red Alert. We are a ship of war against a largely unseen enemy, things can happen too quickly, as you found out with the USS Kitty Hawk.

Anyway, since my night seems to be thoroughly *messed*, I might as well go to the holosuite and work on that recreation program I was developing. It's an English Pub Restaurant in 21st Century Toronto, I'm just trying to fine tune the Yorkshire Pudding so that it doesn't turn out hard like a hockey puck. I think I've got the rest of the stuff down. Would you like to join me for dinner, with real horseradish?

Mr Westfall, one word of advise from your medical officer?? "You have to learn to relax. We are docked at QulTuq there is no need for you to be "Spot on" all the time."

"And as for you invitation to dinner", Teilani looked at her chronometer. "I would love to have dinner with you." It has been a long time since I have eaten something.”

To be continued.

=Sick Bay, USS Zion=

I still have some things to do here, would you mind picking me up at my quarters around 18.45?" Teilani asked.

"That sounds excellent. I'll go get changed then into a clean attire. Thanks for your help Doctor".

"Very well Mr. Westfall, until later."

"I'll double check and see if I can get holodeck 2 in the mean time. I'll see you then, at your quarters".

"I'll see you then". Teilani quickly finished up her work and left some last instructions for her head nurse Ally. She went to her quarters and decided not to put on a uniform but the new green dress she had purchased previously on QT. She had been in her uniform much too long and decided to dress up for the occasion.

Jeff Westfall went back to his quarters, changed into a proper tailored suit, complete with jacket, vest, dress shirt with cuff links and tie bar, and a pair of Doc Marten style dress boots that were apparently popular at the time. They were comfortable for walking, and spit polished to a high sheen.

Jeff chose a black necktie with the Maquis Crest on the middle third. It was old-fashioned, but fit the period of Earth; at least as he understood it.

He took a quick sonic shower, and got dressed quickly.

Proceeding quickly, he made his way to the Doctor's quarters, "At the Double". He stood for a moment and straightened his jacket, then rang the door chime.

Teilani fixed the last part of her hair instead of putting it in a ponytail she had put it up, small rhinestones attached to some strands. "Enter", she called.

Jeff Westfall entered, and took a deep breath when he saw the Doctor, dressed not in Uniform, but very formally attired. "Doctor, you look wonderful," he said. "I can see now we're going to have quite an evening".

"Thank you Mr Westfall", Teilani responded. "You look pretty smart yourself too. Shall we go? Please lead the way."

"Holodeck 2 has been booked for two and a half hours, there's the dinner program I've been working on, and then a little entertainment for later, if you'd like".

"Well I have nothing else planned for this evening, she said amused. "So Mr Westfall I am al yours." Teilani was curious as to what kind of program he had planned. She needed a break and was planning to have herself a good time.

Jeff Westfall offered Dr. Dane his arm, and walked in step beside her, slowly, enjoying the casual occasion, one of few in which he'd had company.

They arrived at Holodeck two, and Jeff activated the interface, pushing a button, bringing the controls on-line from standby. "Computer: Activate Red Lion One Westfall Delta Three".

**********

The doors opened to show a 21st Century main street thoroughfare, complete with noisy electric conveyances called "Streetcars". Long before the advent of the Transporter, people relied on personal vehicles called "cars". Those who didn't have "cars" used "Public Transit".

A short walk down the block hung a black and red sign above a door that said "Red Lion Pub". Quality English Fare served Here Daily.

"There's our Pub, just down there, across the street, Dr. Dane. We'll cross at the traffic light when it turns green.

Teilani looked around amazed. "You have created this program Mr. Westfall," she asked. "It is amazing. I have never been to earth so this is all so new to me".

Both Westfall and Dane crossed the street and headed for the entrance of the pub. "Mr Westfall, as we are in our off time, perhaps you can call me Teilani or Red, what ever pleases you."

Well, I think in that case, Teilani would be appropriate, it's a very pretty name. Can you tell me what it's origin is"?

"It is a name my grandmother had, Teilani explained. "But where it really comes from I do not know. My mother might have known it."

Teilani stepped through the door and entered the pub, the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. There were not many people present.

"I can understand that, it sounds vaguely Celtic, but I'm not sure. I know it suits you. "

You just looked like you'd been through the wringer today when I saw you, so I thought I'd invite you to experience a bit of my hobby--holosuite programming. I started learning how to apply it when I wanted to improve the training simulations, I finally after some "messing about" managed to construct a data grid to import actual ship's log metrics into the program. I decided to try and model programs out of other environments from descriptions in books of history and fiction. I find reality to be the most stimulating creative influence".

"I see", Teilani responded. "I must admit you have done a terrific job. But let's not talk about work. We are here to have a nice time aren't we?"

Teilani walked to an empty table and sat down.

"That sounds right to me, I sometimes let my fascination with my work "boil over" and become far too pervasive in the other aspects of my life.

Jeff sat down across from Teilani and took a sip of the water that was at their places. The decor of the restaurant was dark panelled oak, with electric chandelier lighting. The silver was polished, and the glasses with the water were heavy and large.

Over in the corner behind them, was an area secured, and covered in cork with a clear safety screen. A 20 sectioned target was being hit with sharply pointed projectiles, aided by what looked like avian "Feathers

A table behind the players held their beverages while they took turns going "around the clock".

Teilani looked around the pub it was a delightful place. "Jeff, What is that for, a kind of game? she asked. It looks difficult".

It's a game called "Darts", I found it described in an old volume of games, and decided to try and replicate it. The hardest part was replicating the darts," there were no aerodynamic specs. I think I got them done right. If you'd like we can delete the holo_players and try it out.

"I would love to try it out, but to be honest I am a little hungry. Perhaps we could eat first?" she asked

"Well, then you're in for a real treat. This place has a fabulous Regular Cut, Extra Cut, and King Cut Prime Rib Roast of Beef, with Yorkshire pudding, brown Gravy, roast new potatoes, fresh baby green peas, and garden fresh horseradish...and that will cure sinus congestion faster than any hypospray you've got".

"Well as you seem to know all about it, perhaps you could order for us", Teilani asked. She was curious as to the type of food. It did sound delicious. She took a sip from her water and looked at Jeff. "By the way, I understand they do *REAL* coffee here. They import their beans directly, they're not replicated".

Jeff caught their waitress' eye, and she came over to their table. "Can I get you something from the bar"?

Teilani I'd recommend a white wine cooler to begin, and a cup of Jamaican Blend, Double Strong, Double Sweet, Jumbo".

Teilani laughed. "That sounds good to me Jeff. It seems that by now everybody knows my cravings for coffee."

"Well, there's nothing like "The genuine article" to taste good, when it's drip perked. I'd say you're doing okay if that's your "primary addiction". "And I'll have a Tall Club soda with a twist of lime, on ice". It did not took long before the waitress came to deliver their drinks and placed the wine cooler beside their table.

"That's excellent, thank you Laura," Jeff said, looking at her name tag.

"Have you decided what you'd like to order," Laura asked.

"I think we'd like two of the King Cut Roast Beef platters with extra horseradish".

"That's an excellent choice, Sir", Laura said, looking at Teilani. "Ma'am, I hope you brought an appetite, the King Cut is 16 Oz of Prime Rib Roast of Beef," Laura said.

Teilani took a sip of her wine. "O yes I am nearly starving, It seems my last meal was 3 days ago."

At the same time their waitress came and placed two big plates on the table.

"And you probably drink coffee as a meal substitute. Here's dinner. Be careful, the Horseradish is a sinus clearing specialty, and enough to blow the top of your head off in large quantity".

Teilani took her knife and fork and cut a piece of the roast beef. As she tucked it in her mouth she was overwhelmed by the taste of it. It was like something she had never tasted before. Carefully she took a bit of the horseradish, taking Jeff's warning. She skewed it, and promptly she had to sneeze, and tears appeared in her eyes. "Boy you were right this is strong stuff", she said laughing, quickly she took a sip from her wine.

"That's why it's a good idea to have a good glass of something cold nearby...beer works, wine works, milk works, and so does Chinese Green Tea--just don't ask me why. Just take your time and eat slowly, a certain Medical Officer tells me rushing causes indigestion".

Teilani smiled. “I think I know which Medical officer you refer too.”

The place was beginning to fill, as the dinnertime crowd arrived, and the sun set to the west, filling the sky with a red orange glow, accented by whispy clouds overhead, looking like floating cotton.

Would you like some music to go with dinner Teilani?

“I would love to hear some music,” she responded.

"What Genre do you enjoy"?

“Something from earth, something quite and nice like country and western.

"That sounds good, I'll ask our Waitress".

Jeff caught Laura's eye, and she came over to ask "Is there something else I can get for you"?

Yes, Laura, could you please ask Michael to call up the band now? We'd like some country and western music. And could I have a cup of coffee Jamaican Blend, Double Strong, Double Sweet when you have a moment"?

"Certainly", she said. Laura walked to the bar, and spoke to Michael, the bartender.

The house lights dimmed, and from the side door, a group appeared wearing a uniform of sorts, black denim trousers, called "jeans", and cotton shirts, apparently made of the same material , and ties of western style. Their boots were "Cowboy Style", and elaborately tooled.

"And now, by special request", Michael said picking up a microphone from the cabinet below the bar, "We have "THE POSSE to provide some musical entertainment for your listening enjoyment". The Band Leader walked over to Teilani and said, "Good Evening Ma'am, what would your listening pleasure be this evening"?

“Hm Teilani frowned. “There used to be a song that I particularly liked. Now let me think. Yes it is called Green Green Grass of Home.

"That's a very good choice Ma'am, we're happy to take requests, My name's Reg, do me a favour please, and just whistle if ya think of anything else".

"We will do that thanks, Reg", Jeff replied.

Reg walked back up to the stage, and the house lights went down, a spotlight shone from the other side of the room, bathing Teilani in a bright wash of light. Reg spoke up, "Ladies and Gentlemen, we've had a special request from my new friend "Red" here, for a song that's near and dear to our hearts. Green Green Grass of Home, a song particularly associated with our good friend, the late great John Denver, who was killed tragically in a plane crash, doing what he loved, to fly. May he rest in peace, and sing in heaven with the angels of God".

"Red: This one's for you...Keep smilin'"!

"The old home town looks the same as I step down from the train, and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa. Down the road I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries. It's good to touch the green, green grass of home. Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly. It's good to touch the green, green grass of home. The old house is still standing tho' the paint is cracked and dry, and there's that old oak tree I used to play on...".

Jeff enjoyed seeing Teilani having a good time, she'd made a valiant effort with the Roast Beef Platter, and eaten *ALL* her vegetables. He had half a mind to ask Commander Wright to find out if she's got a hollow leg. He smiled, knowing he'd finally got the home grown horseradish *right*.

As Teilani was basking in the glow of the moment, singing along as she remembered the words from so long ago, Jeff stood up, and walked over to see Reg, and asked for Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places," one of his own rollicking favourites...it was definitely "Up Tempo".

Jeff walked back to their table. “Would you care to dance Teilani,” he asked. “I am not that good in it,” Teilani admitted. “It has been a while.”

Jeff smiled. Just follow my lead and you will be fine. He took Teilani’s hand and let her to the little dance floor.

It didn’t take long before Teilani had the ritme and she and Jeff danced until somewhere far away the sun came up.

Melissa looked up from her desk as Charles and Alyssa stepped into the Security section. She got up and walked over to them. "Good afternoon Lieutenant Atwood. What can I do for you Sir." Melissa was careful to be polite and cordial to the man she had now come to loathe.

“Good Afternoon Lieutenant we are here to interview the prisoners before we transfer them to the prison on Rura Pente." Charles didn’t need to use his senses to realize this was a bad situation and to see that she wasn’t over it yet, but this was the situation and he had to deal it sooner or later.

Melissa looked at Atwood. She could not remember what she ever saw in the man. It was like she wore a blindfold through out their relationship. Now that the blindfold was off she could see all kinds of things that she was not going to miss about him. Melissa opened her mouth to answer him when Sam Carter exited an interview room and walked over to Melissa and handed her a PADD with her notes regarding Gordon Birkhoff.

"Thank you Lieutenant Carter,” said Melissa.

”Your welcome Ma’am,” Sam said. “Lieutenant, Ensign,” Sam nodded towards Atwood and Northrop.

“This is Warrant Officer Alyssa Northrop, the newest addition to the Intelligence Department”, said Charles making some space so Alyssa could introduce herself.

Alyssa held her hand out, first the Melissa, then to Sam. "It's very nice to meet you....and I'm sure I'll enjoy working with both of you."

She smiled, both of them were quite pretty. Smirking to herself, she could see why Atwood had picked the two of them. Of course, the only way she could know that was by the fact that Atwood was easier to read than a story PADD. In this situation at least.

Welcome to the Zion, Sam said, shaking Alyssa’s hand. “It will be a pleasure working with you too.”

"Please to meet you Doctor Northrop." Melissa had made it a priority to read the Maquis record of all new crew members ever since the Crewman Wilson incident and she was familiar with Alyssa's accomplishments. She smiled. "I am sure our Intel department will gain greatly from your talents."

After the introductions where made they proceeded to the Brig area. "The prisoners here have already been screened and will be going to Rura Pente. Most of them are very loyal to the Federation, the rest are mercenaries who we feel are too dangerous to let go," said Melissa and started to interview the POWs.

"If there is nothing else Sir." Melissa said "Lieutenant Carter and I have a full schedule of interviews already lined up. We will leave you to your work."

Charles nodded, “You are dismissed.”

"Hi Counselor," Miranda smiled. "It is good to see you again. What can I do for you."

"May I have a glass of tea, please? It is good to see you also. How have you been?"

Miranda looked at Patia. She looked tired. "I sure can, perhaps you would like to try something new instead. I am testing several new drinks."

"You can pick the poison, might as well try something new."

"Excellent, I have been wanting to try this one." Miranda began putting the drink together. She used a bluish fruit. She placed it into a mixing device. She poured the vibrant blue liquid into a glass and placed it in front of Zoei. "This is an Andorian Passion Fire."

Patia stared at the glass, almost suspiciously. "That is quite the color, isn't it?" She raised the glass slowly to her lips, sipping tentatively. Flavor burst over her tongue, surprising her with its intensity. "I think this one is a keeper, Miranda."

"Thank you." Miranda looked around. "Things have been pretty slow since we have been docked at Qul Tuq so I thought I would test a few different drink I ideas out. Would you care for anything to eat?"

"I would like a small cup of broccoli cheese soup and a few crackers, if you wouldn't mind." Patia leaned forward, propping her chin on her closed fist and reached for her glass. Sipping again, she savored the flavor, allowing it to slide over her tongue, attempting to separate the flavors and identify a few of the ingredients. "What fruit is in this, Miranda?"

Miranda smiled, "Andorian passion fruit. of course." Miranda chuckled, "There are some Andorian's who believe it to have an aphrodesiac effect. I personally just like how it tastes."

"That is the only fruit? I thought I had a separate hint of a citrus, a little more bite than I had expected. Personally, I am liking the taste as well. I am not too concerned about the other effects." Patia winked.

Miranda winked back, "You are safe, I do not believe there are any Andorians on the Zion. Miranda placed a cup of soup in the bar infront of Patia. "There you go. Enjoy."

"Well, there goes one of your marketing tools for it. Thank you for the soup." Patia dipped her spoon in the soup and slowly stirred. She had been so hungry when she came in and now, it just wasn't appetizing. She tasted a spoonful. The texture was smooth and creamy with tiny bits of broccoli. The flavor was as wonderful as always. She just wasn't hungry any longer. Patia took several more bites, finished half her drink and pushed her bowl and glass from her.

"It is time to call it a night, Miranda. I hope you have a pleasant remainder to your evening."

"You to Counselor. Have a good night"

"Thank you, Miranda, you as well." Patia pushed away from the counter and turned to face the door. She strode across the room. As she crossed the threshold, she paused. A random thought sprang to her mind, one should could not escape. Tomorrow she was going to Qul Tuq. There was something about the station pulling her. Maybe then, this restless energy would subside.

Craig Whitmore was almost finished with his shift. Beta shift was here and were getting briefed on the status of the ship's systems. He was looking forward to the poker game later this evening but there was one thing he needed to do. In support of Adam and Nelson he had configured the environmental controls to skew the temperature in the marine barracks and family quarters by 20 degrees. Starting about an hour after gamma shift starts and ending an hour before alpha shift began. "Yes, it is going to be cold in Marineland tonight," thought Whitmore. Tomorrow it would skew the temperature in the other direction and so on, until he stopped it.

Whitmore finished up and then returned to his quarters for a quick shower before heading over to Nelson's for the game.

Craig chuckled when he thought about it. He jumped in the shower and put on some casual cloths. When finished he took his previous winnings and headed for Nelson's quarters.

"He guys, he said upon entering, I'm feeling I am going to win tonight. so I hope you have brought enough chips and brewskies."

"No way Craig," said Adam. "After the week I had I am due for a big win."

As the three of them were setting up for the party Paulis entered with Philips from Operations. "Hey, guys! Ready for some poker?"

"Hey Paulis, Philips. Glad you could make it," said Nelson. Paulis sat down and began shuffling cards.

Paulis gave everybody 5 cards. Craig looked at his, 2 aces, a 5 and a 9of hearts, and 3 of clubs. Not bad. "So guys, he said have you heard about Adam's little encounter in sickbay. " 2 new cards please, as he laid the 3 and the 5 away.

"Who hasn't," said Philips. "The ship is buzzing about it. Is it true he drew his phaser on you?" Philip's tossed several poker chips into the center of the table.

Adam was shocked, "Of course not. It wasn't like that. He roughed us up and was quite rude about it but he never drew his phaser. He looked at his cards. It was not a very good hand but he tossed his chips into the pot.

"I would not worry about it," said Craig. "Things like these always have a way of working themselves out." Craig tossed in his chips.

"It's like I said earlier, Marines are all the same. They think they own the world."

"Hmm true, the sooner we get rid of them the better. I fold", said Nelson, throwing his cards on the table. "But what do you mean Craig, saying that things will work them selves out."

"Don't tell me you have planned anything?"

"Would I do that?" Craig an injured look as he took three cards.

Everyone in the room laughed. The truth was that none of them would put it past him. "Besides," said Craig. "What would the fun be in messing with Marines anyway. They probably would not even realize what was going on." Craig looked thoughtfully at Philips. "Although, It might be kind of fun to program their replicators to only dispence Klingon food."

The room laughed again, "Yeah said Paulis, that would be a hoot. Let them eat gach."

"Could you really do that Craig," asked Adam as he took his cards.

"I could," aswered Craig but I would have to visit each replicator and reprogram it. I do not have computer access to everyone's replicator."

"I could do it," said Philips. "Part of our job in operations is to program everyone's replicators."

"I sort of thought you could," said Craig.

Philips noticed everyone was watching him. "I could get into serious trouble if I got caught. I won't do it."

Craig sighed, "That is the problem with you operations types. You are afraid of risk. Without risk you will never win." Craig layed his cards on the table. "Three aces. See, I win."

"Not again," Adam moaned throwing his cards on the table. He laughed while taking a drink from his beer. "Whitmore is right, Philips. You ops guys are always afraid to take risks. Chicken." Nelson slapped Philips on the back. "You are right it is dangerous, he said while making a clucking sound.

"Right another round guys? Adam said while he reshuffled.
