Memo: To all Zion Crew

From: Ensign Favor

RE: I Just Flew In From Rigel 6, And Boy Are My Arms Tired: Travel Planning, Poetry, and Baby, You Look Smashing!

Good morning, cast and crew.

I must confess, my leave extended much longer than I had planned, and as a side note to all of you vacationers, a word of advice. Make sure that when you go on shore leave, that your bail bondsman can 1, be reached any time, day or night, this time zone or that one, this galaxy or that one, and 2, can post your bail in a variety of different currencies. Just in case, and all that.

Otherwise, you might spend several extra days that you hadn't planned on spending, in a stinking, primitive jail in the Sands of Ozxhl, just because you sucker-punched a churl who richly deserved it. ( Sure, I broke a finger, but you should have seen the bones sticking out of his face. I was in a pink seratonin fog, people. There is a reason why the medical community recognizes both adrenalin and seratonin as valid neural-enhancement drugs.)

And, once you get back to your ship, you could wind up standing tall before the man, explaining why you shouldn't be court-martialed for going AWOL beyond your approved leave period.

Today I have some poetry that I wrote with a burnt match on the side of a concrete cinderblock, while I was gone on my vacation. You know. The vacation that I've been on for the past six weeks? Because I was not here? I had plenty of time to reflect, and with my extensive Ritalin memory, I carried all my poetry back to the ship on the canvas that is my mind, and I will share it with you.

But first, I have some questions.

Was I missed?

Was it hard for you to live without me?

I hope so.

Were you able to get along without me?

I hope not.

Speaking of Sick Bay, I have a haiku:

Chamber of malaise I hope that no one croaked Due to my absence.

So anyway, my hair is growing back, and I must say, I look smashing. I really do. I admired my chestnut fuzz, now about two inches or so long, in the mirror this morning. It's nice having hair again. It's good and spiky, and sometimes I put goo in it so that the clumps of hair harden into skewers and when I walk down the corridors, others dodge around me.

It's like having a big, dangerous trap perched atop your head. It looks like it might hurt, and nobody wants to put it to the test.

It's good to have spikey hair, I think, as a pre-emptive measure to keep others from invading your personal space. I can recommend this as a tried and true means of keeping others at arm's length, if that's your goal. This spiked hair thing is a trick that I learned from Gilda, my cellmate on vacation. To give credit where it's due.

But I digress. For self affirmations, I look in the mirror, and I smile so that I can see all my pretty white teeth, and I say to myself, "Ensign Favor," I say, "you look succulent and juicy." That's exactly how I started my day today. I suggest you do the same, it will put a bounce in your step like nothing else.

Have you all been taking your vitamins while I was gone? Have you been getting enough exercise? Prevention is worth a pound of cure, or something like that. It's not worth a pound of chocolate though! HA! HA! And the crap that comes out of the regurgitator (simulator, elevator, escalator, regulator, whatever!) well, bah! You can't really call that stuff chocolate, can you?

I sincerely hope that all of you have taken good care of yourselves while I was gone.

I hope that none of you have been indulging in things you shouldn't. I hope that none of you have been hitting the sauce too hard, or self-medicating in other ways during my absence. You do that too much and you'll wind up sitting in a plastic chair, saying things like, "Hi, my name is Bev Peabody, and I'm addicted to glint. It's been 10 days since my last confession," or something along those lines.

Lastly, I couldn't help but noticed that someone has been fooling with my tri-corder. People, I believe you were warned about this at the very beginning. I'm quite certain that you were. In fact, I *know* that you were, because I wrote a manifesto of menace, detailing exactly what would happen if one of you touched my tricorder. Thank heavens I saved a copy for posterity.

I believe I will be launching a professional investigation to find the perpetrator of this crime, and when I identify the individual who touched my medical instrument while I was gone, I am going to poke him or her with my spikey hair until they bleed.

That is not a threat, it is a promise.

You can run, and you can hide, but you cannot get back the DNA which I have already extracted from the surface of my tricorder. I will find you. Oh yes. I will find you.

==Pentara V==

O boy, Sam thought, this is a bad idea, she knew that with her training she probably could take them but why risk it. Sam turned around and ran.

"After her Rok." The two men ran after her. Laughing and brandishing their weapons.

Sam ran as fast as her legs could carry her. She heard the footsteps of the two men following her, she ran even harder. Due to her own stupidness Sam took a wrong turn and found her self in a corridor, there was no way for her to escape. Rok and his friend had her cornered. She was breathing heavily as she saw the two men approaching her, knives flickering.

"Look guys, there is not reason for this, Sam tried to reason with the two. "Just put the knives away o.k. I'll be just on my way. I do not want to cause you any trouble". As Sam was talking her right hand disappeared in the crevasses of her tunic, trying to reaching for her knife. She would not risk using a phaser, it was better to avoid any further disturbance.

"Come one guys, let it be. Just let me pass". Sam's adrenaline levels were of the scale, she knew she had to fight.

Rok launched the knife directly for her rib cage. Jumping backwards sideways, Rok missed her by only an inch. Sam grabbed his arm and used it as a leverage, using his own bodyweight to bring him out of balance. As he turned to maintain his footing a stabbing, almost unbearable pain shot through Sams left underarm Rok had managed to slash it. Sam managed to maintain hold of his arm and allowed herself to go limp, using her body weight to pull him to the ground. She used her other arm to smash her palm against his nose and forced its head back. She pushed once more against his face, pushed and forced his head back so close to a right angle she though it would snap. Through sheer will, her left hand slippery of her own blood, Sam maintained relentless pressure, and when she felt she could press no more, the body of Rok went limp, he had lost consciousness.

The ease with which Sam had disabled his friend made the other guy go mad, he slashed out at Sam. She recoiled, trying to caught his wrist. Through sheer luck Sam managed to catch it, she gave a hard snap and the dagger went flying. This made the guy even more dangerous, being defeated by a young woman. He ran forward and thrusted himself forward like a spear, only to meet the fractal edged knife Sam held in her hand, edges shaper as any dagger, pierced him beneath the ribs, just beneath the heart. He sank on his knees and saw Sam staring down at him. The last words he heard as he was dying were. "Don't worry - Hell is dark".

Sam looked at the two guys, and began to shiver as the adrenaline levels subsided, she felt the pain in her arm, blood trickled down her wrist and hand. Sam torn of a piece of her tunic and managed to wrap the bandage around her arm. When finished she cleaned her hands and knife on her trousers. Luckily no-body had seen this fight, and with a last glance at the two bodies, she turned around and began to ran back to Charles.

It only took her a minute to find her way back at the Bar just in time to see Charles wanting to enter.

"Charles!!" she yelled, "wait a second", keeping her injured arm pressed at her side..

"Of course Honey what happened", said Charles noticing that Sam was very agitated and covered with blood.

"O nothing I ran into some problems, Sam responded trying to get her breathing back to normal. "Nothing I could not handle, but just hit me in the head if I ever suggest that we should split up again".

"Ok", let me see, he said while he gave her a kiss... he always liked to be right. “Can you manage, we will attend to this cut later al’right?. Sam nodded.

As both Sam and Charles entered the bar, a foul odor rached their nostrils. The bar was dimmly lit, they could se several makeshift stages each with a partially clad woman dancing for a crowd of men. In the corner there was a rather fat Ferengi sitting in a comfortable chair. On either side of him were two human women with very little clothing. They were hovering aound the Ferengi stroking the lobes on his head. Behind the Ferengi stood two really large Nausicans. They looked around the bar as if searching for trouble.

"Have you got the latinum you own me Bas," said the Ferengi to am man who stood before him. Charles and Sam recognized the man he was talking to as the fellow who directed them to the shack where they left some of their belongings.

"I got some items to sell you Ramok," he said has he empited the contents of his bag on the table in front of the Ferengi. Out on the table spilled two phaser rifles, some camping equipment, and water filtration unit, and a med kit.

"Interesting," said Ramok as he picked up the phaser rifles and he examined them, "These have Maquis markings. Where did you get them?"

"I found them," offered Bas.

"I am sure you did," said the Ferenghi smiling his toothy grin. "I will give to 10 bars of latinum for the lot. Of course you owe me 50 bars so I will just deduct it from what you own me."

"Ten bars," prtested Bas, "This is good quality equipment Ramok, hardly been used."

"Yes they are in good shape." said Ramok as one of the Nausicans packed up the loot and placed it behind the Ferengi's chair.

Bas continued to protest loudly until the Ferengi snaped his fingers and one of the Nausicans grabbed Bas around the neck, drug him across the room and threw him out of the bar. Shoving his way past Charles and Same he returned to his post.

Turning his attention to Charles he looked at him and then at Sam. "You are going to have to clean her up and remover her clothes if you expect me to buy your woman humaan." he said to Charles. "I do not want her bleeding all over the customers. She better be able to dance. I have no use for a woman who cannot dance. Do not expect me to pay top dollar for her either. She is damaged!"

How are your dancing skills Charles asked silently. "Not bad", Sam replied. "You want me to….?

"Ok Sam start dancing and take him from behind I'll handle the rest", said Charles with a smile.

Sam took off her robe and started dancing using her body language to enchant the Ferengi. She dance around him stroking his lobs, blowing in his ears. As she stood behind him she pulled her phaser and put it on the Ferengi's throat. "Tell them to back off" , Sam said, pointing at the Nausicans. "Charles he's all yours"

Charles took his phaser out and made a shot to the air while he said out loud "If anyone moves the Ferengi dies..." He approached to the Ferengi and said in a low calm voice "Now let's go to a quiet place so we can talk", he signalled to Sam to move to the back room.

Time seemed to freeze. The Ferengi began whining and begging. "Please don't hurt me. I will do whatever you ask," he said. All eyes in the bar were on the pathetic display of cowardice that he was putting on. All eyes, except four. One of the Nausicans quietly reached out to his security panel behind him and tapped in a short key code. Suddenly there was a small explosion and the floor beneath Charles gave away. Charles fell into a deep pit and lay unconscious on the floor.

At the same time both Nausicans jumped Sam who was momentarily caught off guard. Both of them grabbed her and disarmed her and threw her naked into the pit with Charles.

Sam got the wind knocked out of her as she landed on the floor, she heard a snapping sound and a sharp pain, she realized that she had broken her tibia. In an instant she saw that Charles was unconscious, she realized that there was only one thing she could do. She pulled the emergency transport device of of Charles' cloths.

"Computer emergency beam out now"!

When the transporter cycle ended Sam found her self back on the Euphrates. The intruder alert claxon was blaring. Looking around Sam was surprised to discover Jax was sitting in the pilot's seat. "Hello," she said. "I have a message for you from your captain. You are ordered to return to the Zion." Touching a button attached to her wrist a transporter beam enveloped her and she was gone.

"Computer lock on to Charles Atwoods bio signs and beam him aboard immediately".

Sam limped to the pilot's chair while putting on a jumper, when she heard the transporter cycle completed, Charles laid on the floor of the shuttle.

"Shut off intruder alert and plot a course to Maqui space, Sam ordered. "Course plotted", the computer responded. "Engage, warp 2". As shiver went through the shuttle as it accelerated.

Sam limped to Charles who still was unconscious, as she crawled to him she managed to get a emergency med kit hanging from the wall. Frantically Sam opened it, using the bone regenerator on her broken tibia, which was fixed in a jiffy. As she run the medical scanner over Charles she saw that he had severe headtrauma, there was nothing she could do from there he needed get back to the Zion a.s.a.p. Sam injected Charles with 15 cc of Inaprovaline and cordrazine, which prevented clotting of the blood. With all her strength she managed to pull Charles to the bunk bed, the only thing she could do was make him comfortable.

Finally Sam sank to her knees, resting her head on the edge of the bunkbed. Although Sam was not religious she looked up and mumbled: "God if you exist, please do not let him die, I love him with all my heart, please do not let him die. Whipping away a tear from her eye.

Finally she stood up after covering Charles with a blanket, and walked back to the pilot chair.

Melissa was in the promeneid remembering old times when she had been there with Charles and she felt a little lonely suddenly Ensign Westfall opened a channel and told her that the Zion was gonna depart in 30 Minutes and she neded to present herself to the chief security officer.

She stood up and hurried to the Zion and present herself for active Dutie in 20 Minutes she was welcoming the new Marine Crew and was given the order to prepare their temporary quarters on the marine deck and so she did, while she was doing it she couldn't stop thinking in how was Charles and how would he be able to rejoin them if he was still thinking that they where stationed at Qul Tuq.

She finished her Job and went straight to the bridge and sat down in the Security 2nd Chair next to the chieff and begun checking all the security procedures so nothing could go in between the ship and the conclussion of their important Mission.

She realized that all the work there was complete and was order to supervise all the armory and the storeage of all new equipment an so she stood up and went to the turbolift to go to her new asignment.

Hunter stepped out of the Commodores Office and signaled the Zion transporter operator to beam him aboard. He began to briskly walk toward his ready room. Commander Wright, there's an emergency we're leaving right away. Can you meet me in my ready room?"

"On my way," came Wright's reply.

Stepping into the turbo lift he tapped his com badge again, "Forrester, Riaan, this is the captain, we are leaving in 30 minutes, please do what you can to make the ship ready by then."

Understood Captain everything should be ready in 20 minutes, Riaan, out

--1100--

Stepping off the turbo lift he sat in the captain's chair and pressed the intercom, "All hands, this is the Captain, we are being dispatched to an emergency situation. We are departing in 30 minutes."

Hunter walked over to Westfall who had been the only officer on the bridge. "Westfall, go to yellow alert."

"Aye-aye Captain, Yellow Alert," Westfall said to the empty bridge. The emergency klaxon sounded, muted in the background, the status light flashing

"Sir, Incoming message. 200 Marines have boarded the Zion, Deck 14, Shuttle Bay two.

"We're about to confront some hostiles, you have 8 hours to prepare," said Hunter.

"Qul Tuq Station, this is the U.S.S. Zion. We request priority one departure clearance in thirty minutes".

Please advise Qul Tuq Security we are departing to cross reference our personnel are not left behind"

--1105--

Westfall activated the cross-link to the other stations, and began checking status boards. "Sir, 95% of all personnel have reported, and will be aboard in twelve minutes". Of the Bridge crew, Forrester has not responded".

Hunter nodded his acknowledgment, "We can't wait, and if you can't locate her shortly we will need to leave without her." At that moment Wright entered the bridge, "Westfall, you have the Bridge," said Hunter walking toward his ready room.

"Aye, Aye Captain". Westfall transferred the Captain's panel to the tactical station, and continued running the departure protocols down one by one.

In the ready room Hunter briefed Wright of the current situation. "Any concerns Number One?"

"Only one Sir, I sure hope we can get there in time,", said Wright.

--1125--

Captain all personnel, and systems are ready for departure, five crewmembers including Charles Atwood and Ensign Forrester are not onboard and are unaccounted for, also last minute supplies have been loaded. All weapons needed have also been beamed to cargo bay five, BeThal standing guard till they can be stored properly. We are a go other then the missing crewman Captain. I am on my way to the bridge now, Riaan out.

Hunter nodded at Wright, "Ok, lets go get 'em. Conn, clear the station and then take us out full impulse."

The Zion maneuvered out the station and powered up to full impulse, after 10 minutes the ship was clear to head into warp.

--1135--

A message was displayed on Wrights console. Wright turned to Hunter, "The Atlanta has signaled that she is coming out of dry dock, they'll have warp capabilities in 30 minutes. They advise that we go ahead. They will catch up."

Hunter leaned forward, "Conn, lay in a course 080 mark 010, warp 9....engage."

Charles and Sam headed into the directions the drunk guy had told them. It was dark much too dark to see where they were going, so Sam pulled out a small beacon, set it on low and kept it pointed to the ground. A bolt of lightning crackled across the sky and Sam tried to use the split second of light to get a look at the surroundings, but all she ended up with was a silhouette of drooping houses and water logged vegetation.

"Can you see anything, Professor"? she asked Charles

"No not much Just Keep walking Lizzie", answered Charles while he searched for the phaser under his clothes

Then as suddenly as it had begun, the rain stopped. Dark clouds scudded and Sam felt the hairs on the back of her head stiffened when the breeze picked up. Several minutes passed, Sam shivered in her wet clothes as the breeze picked up.

"Professor, Sam whispered, then shivered again. "Where is he or she, I do not like this. I feel we are being watched".

"It's obvious we are being tested, our contact is deciding if we are the ones or some other people", answered Charles in a very low voice.

Then at the end of the Alley a dark figure appeared they walked slowly towards it they couldn't tell if it was male or female and they kept walking until they where at a safe distance.

The figured motioned them to come closer. As they approached she said, "Follow me." She led them out of the courtyard and past a row of worn out shacks. They walked for what seamed like a lifetime. It even appeared that they were going in circles. As they continued to walk another dark figure popped out of the shadows. It was the man they had first met when they entered the tavern. Then his eyes appeared unfocused and drunk but now they were alive with excitement.

"Good evening Jax." he said to their Guide as he wiped bits of skin and blood of a long thin wire. "They were followed by a Cardassian. I have taken care of it," he said as he coiled up the wire. He laughed as he held the coiled wire up for everyone to see, "With all the technology available to kill people this old method is still my favorite." He slipped the wire somewhere under the folds of his clothing.

Jax grunted but did not say a word as she pushed past him towards one of the old shacks. She made a series on knocks on the door. The door opened and Jax had a brief conversation with someone inside. She then led them through the door.

The group followed a passageway down a series of stairs and into a large ornate room. In the room stood a tall, slightly balding man wearing unusually colorful clothing.

Jax stepped forward and removed the hood of the cloak she was wearing to reveal long dark hair and disapproving scowl on her otherwise beautiful face. "These are the ones," she said tossing a reproachful look at her companion, "Stol over there says they were followed by a Cardassian. He has butchered him as usual."

The smile that had been on the man's face disappeared, "I guess it will soon be time for us to move on to our next place. Stol, take a team and dispose of his vessel. Report back to me when you have finished."

"Yes Master," replied Stol. Stol turned and quietly left the room. Jax moved into the shadows of the room and silently watched.

The man then turned his attention to Atwood and Carter. "Hello, I understand you are looking for me?" The man took a seat in an overstuffed chair and encouraged Carter and Atwood to do the same.

"Well that depends on who you are..."said Charles hoping he wouldl answer with the code.

"You tell me Lieutenant Charles Atwood, Chief Intelligence Officer of the USS Zion." he laughed and then went on, "Your captain and I go back a long ways. I owe him, which is why I am helping you."

Charles started to use his betazoid Gifts and felt the man was telling the truth so he said after a while "Ok that's fair to me...First of all may I present Lt. Jg Samantha Carter, my assistant", said Charles looking to Sam and waiting for her to introduce herself

Nice to finally meet you, Sam said, keeping an ever watchfull eye.

"So now we all know each other... I was told that you have some Intel for me", said Charles

Rex chuckled, "My dear boy, I have a great deal of information. You will need to be more specific." He gestured towards the room with his hands. "This place... this planet is just a small part of my information empire. What is it that you want to know about?"

"Well to be honest I need all the intel you can give me about Captain Jenkins... and if you know something how in the hell did Cardassians got stealth technology?", said Charles plainly

Teilani hurried back to sickbay, accompanied by the sound of the yellow alert. As the entered the sickbay doors she felt under her feet how the Zion accelerated to warp.

“Ally, Teilani said to one of the nurses, lets get these supplies stored before they are all over the floor”. “Yes Doctor”. “Also, Teilani continued are there any appointments scheduled for today”? “There are some new civilians onboard, who need to receive a physical, but they need yet to make appointments”. “Right, we need to see if we can get them done today, the sooner the better”.

While Teilani was filing the medications she continued “Has someone from engineering been here to fix the stasis as well as the containment fields on biobed 3”? “We still have problems with it”.

“No doctor, Ally responded, their response was that they were too busy to sent someone over.

Teilani became annoyed, “Jeepers, I probably need to do it myself”. “Ally, tell them I know they are busy, but insist that they sent someone over right now”. “Yes Ma’am, I’ll ask them right now”.

After all the supplies were stored Teilani went to her office. She wanted to review her some personal logs on Cardassians, cause the question was what made them tick?.

=Computer open personal log, Dane 2beta

Cardassians

Home world: Cardassia Prime, 3rd of eight planets orbiting a single type K7V (orange dwarf star). Although these worlds – several class-F and Class H planets – provided much needed resources, their mineral wealth has long since been exhausted. The system lies in the Bajor sector. Cardassia is a planed poor in natural resources having exhausted what little silicated they had a result of their efforts to develop their space fleet. The atmosphere, though composed of nitrogen-oxygen, is thick enough to trap excess heat, making the planet warm (approx. 25 degrees).

History: Long ago, the Cardassians were a peaceful, spiritual people. Their world was home to a splendid civilization known as the First Hebitian civilization. They created incredible works of art, technically sophisticated philosophies, and extraordinary architecture. As the Cardassians exhausted their resources, starvation and disease ran rampant. People died by the millions. In order to survive, the Cardassians focussed their efforts on acquiring new territories and new resources As the military gain more power, the whole of society was reorganize to support military expansion at the cost of the very culture they sought to preserve. Cardassians call this gradual decline of their civilization vereshvar.

Personality The typical Cardassian is xenophobic, arrogant, and paranoid. The believe theirs is the greatest civilization in the universe; other lesser species are intent on preventing Cardassia from taking its rightful place as the most powerful empire in the quadrant. By their nature, they value influence over wealth or power, since the both of them can often bring you both of the latter. They like to be at the centre of a complex web of relationships, from which they can strike without fear of discover or reprisal. Why strike out against a rival when you can have others do it for you? Cardassians respond well to orders, though their instinct for opportunity and influence can compromise their command structures; it is not unheard of for a Cardassian soldier to betray his crewmates as a favor to an influential Gul. They prefer to deal with others from a position of strengths, whether that strength be military, intellectual or social. The average Cardassian makes sure that he has the upper hand.

As Teilani read through the information she was stuck by several questions. - Why gave the Cardassians their loyalty to a human? - Is their a way to influence them to give up this loyalty? - Why “…..

As she was thinking of the next question, she got interrupted by voices in the examination room. She stood up in order to check who made all that noise, O yeah she could have guessed it. It was Mr Craig Witmore.

“Well Mr Witmore, Teilani said, appreciated that you could find some time to get our biobeds fixed”. “He.. Doc, Craig said with a twinkle in his eyes, for you anything”.

He grabbed his tools and went to work.

"Conn, ETA to intercept?" asked Hunter.

"Six hours 26 minutes, sir." came the reply.

Hunter tapped his com badge, "All department heads, briefing at 1300, observation deck."

He stood up and and turned to the tactical officer, 'you have the bridge.'

=Observeration Lounge=

Twenty minutes later, Hunter stood before his top officers.

"Earlier today a distress call was received from a convoy of 5 freighters. They contain scientist and research data from the federation. Those on board are seeking asylum; They are being pursued by at least 3 axis ships, possibly 2 Federation ships and 1 Cardassian. We will be intercepting these ships in 6 hours. I don't need to tell everyone it is imperative we be combat ready and at our fullest potential." Hunter looked around the room.

"The Atlanta is also en route, and will catch up to us shortly."

He continued, "Operations, what is your status?" he asked Riaan.

All supplies needed have been stored, Be'Thal standing guard over Cargo Bay Five till the rest of the weapons can be stored properly.

Also we have 6 new recruits, civilians. Four for the mess hall and two hairstylist, one is also a manicurist they have been assigned their quarters and so far no complaints or concerns from them sir, replied Riaan.

Engineering stated that all repairs have been attended to that needed to be done.

Everything is under control and running smoothly so far, sir, replied Riaan.

Also sir, if Marine's need assistance of any kind I would be more then willing to help I spent a year in training with them at the academy.

Hunter nodded.

Hunter looked at Zoei, "Counselor? Your assessment of the crew's readiness?"

"Captain, from all indictication, the crew is mentally prepared for all eventualities at this time."

"Silvio, everything ready in engineering?"

"Yes Sir. Everything is ready. All engineering personel have been assigned to damage control teams and will be stations through out the ship. All ships systems are ready." said Silvio.

´Excellent work.¡ said Hunter at Silvio's conclusion.

Next Hunter looked at Westfall, "I want you and your team to coordinate with the tactical department on the Atlanta. Make sure we are working together and not shooting at each other."

´Understood Sir.¡ he replied.

"Sarkik, coordinate with the Atlanta science officer to see if there is anything that can be done give tactical an advantage with defense and offensive systems, cloaks, shields, all that. The Cardassians may be using a new cloak system."

The Vulcan just returned Hunter's request with a stoic nod.

"Dr. Dane, medical department should expect causalities. Plan for the worse, hope for the best." he said with a smile and a nod. "What is sickbay's status?"

Sickbay is up and ready , Captain Teilani responded, we are preparing holodeck 8 for back up.

"No doubt you've all noticed the new face here, Major Madriani is CO of a marine detachment assigned to the Zion. Major?"

¡Good day all¡ Ryan said with a smile looking around the table. ´I have coordinated my operations with tactical and security, we have security teams and marine teams positioned near tactical, and civilian locations on board, at the first sing of a boarding party beaming on we will know about it.¡ Ryan said confident.

"I believe Commander Wright has a few announcements," said Hunter with a wry look

"It is important that we fill our as many of our vacant positions as we can. I would also like to announce effective immediately the following assignments, Dr. Dane to Chief Medical Officer, Charles Atwood to Chief Intellegence Officer, Ensign Zoei to Chief Counselor, Ensign Lindsey to Chief Flight Officer and Riaan to Operations Manager. In a few hours we'll be at battlestations. I expect everyone to perform their duty to the utmost of their abilities. More assignments will follow, but for now, that is all. Dismissed."

Hunter and Wright left the briefing and headed for the ready room.

My assets in Maquis space have informed me that he has been causing a bit of trouble there, but then you already know that, don't you?" Rex ran his hand through his hair. "Reggie has been a tough nut to crack. His men are very loyal to him. I have lost several of my agents to him."

"Well, getting down to business then." Rex looked at Charles and Sam. "What Reggie is up to is a bit of a mystery to us. About 6 months ago he made a deal with a Romulan for their cloaking technology. When he took it back to the Federation he found that their cloaking technology was not compatible with Federation technology so it was quite worthless. Starfleet Command was not happy and it assigned Jenkins as a liaison to the Cardassians. Based on what we have discovered from the recent Kittyhawk incident he has apparently been able to get that technology to work with Cardassian technology."

"Mmm Interesting... Do you know how many Cardassians vessels have a working cloak and Have you discover why does he wants to kill our captain?", Asked Charles

"Well, apparently only one Cardassian ship has a working cloak. Perhaps the Cardassian Guls are reluctant to use this new technology. Or perhaps it is unstable." replied Rex.

"I think the Guls aren't willing to install the technology cause they don't know it exist...Anything of his possible location Rex?", said Charles

"Reggie has been known to frequent visit a small planet just inside Cardassian territory. He appears to have a small base there. One of my Ferengi assets, a ahh.. trader tells me that he has been buying a lot of merchandise from him lately." Rex smiled, "You need to be careful with Ferengi information though."

"I know they could lie to you just to get your money", Said Charles

"The Ferengi's name is Ramok. He deals in human merchandise. He has been selling Reggie slaves."

Sam could not keept her mouth shut anymore, what she heard was very disturbing.

"Slaves, she said with an outburst, slavery has been abandoned for more then hundered years". "Any idea where he gets those poor people from". "Why haven't you stopped him!".

Rex looked at the young woman who was suprprisingly emotional for an intelligence operative. "Well now, first of all the Federation may not practice slavery but do not be foolish enough to think that worlds outside the Federation share that position. Second of all, I am in the information gathering business not the free the slaves movement."

"He is right Sam, Please calm down... remember that our mission is to get all the intell we can on Capt Jenkins... remember we are still at war and if we do not stop this maniac we might lost the whole alliance in the process", Said Charles

"Yes Sir, I know you are right, its just ... Sam paused and pressed her lips together so that they formed a thin line and her face hardend. " I'm sorry Sir, it won't happen again".

"Good Sam keep focused", Charles replied.

"Yes, well now, are there any other questions you have? About anything?" Rex guestured with his hands, inviting them to ask more questions if they had them.

"Well Sir, if you don't mind my asking Sam hesitated whilst looking at Charles, what happend here?" "Is everybody really contaminated with the plague"? "Maybe..... maybe we can do anyting for you all"

Rex smiled with pride, "They are convincing aren't they? No need to worry though. The plague is all part of our illusion. It keeps unwanted guests from stopping by."

Both charles and sam nodded. "True, well Rex you will concurr with me that I need solid evidence to prove this... I'll be glad if you could provide it to me", said Charles

Rex was mildly astonished by the arrogance of this fellow. "I am sorry Lieutenant Atwood but all I have to offer is information. I have no solid evidence to give."

"Ok, I'm sorry too", Charles waited for a second and decided to ask Tul for a way to meet the Ferengi so he decided to ask it plainly "Rex, is there any form that I can contact the Ferengi you just told us?"

"You will probably find him on Pentara V It is just outside Cardassian territory. When he is not doing business he likes to hang out at a bar there called "Deepest Desires". It is truly a slime pit." Rex got a serious look on his face. "You must not trust him with anything important. He is a ferengi and looks at everything for a profit." Looking them over closley he added. "You will need to develop a new ledgend for yourselves if you go into Cardassian space. Archiologists will not do, Cardassians' take a dim view of people digging up their bones."

"Mmm, I guess that plan B is in order, right honey", said Charles teasing Sam

Sam was surprised, plan B took her by surprise but she played along. "You know, Imzadi she responded with a sexy voice, plan B is fine by me".

"Ok, Red Thanks for all and goodbye", Said Charles

"Godbye and send my regards to Ian", Answered Rex

"I will... Computer 2 to beam up", said Sam

"Aknowledge", answered the onboard Computer

"Energize!", Stated Charles and the two officers desapeared from the planet...

==USS Zion==

It did not take long before Craig was finished in sickbay. “Well Doc, he said, the problems with the fields should now be over”. “But you can call on me anytime, he said. He like this red heared Doctor, he loved it when her cheeks went red when he spoke to her. If his schedule permitted it it would be interesting to find out why.

“Thanks Lt”, Teilani said, she was glad he finally finished. Each time Mr Witmore was around Teilani became uneased.

“See you, Doc, Craig took his tools and left Sickbay. The next thing on his to do list was a diagnostic test in several Jeffries tubes.

== somewhere in the ship, in a Jeffries tube==

Lt. Witmore was running a level one diagnostic on the ships systems. A long and boring process to be sure. But a needed duty that every engineer finds himself being assigned. Cheif Engineer Silvio provided him with an assistant for the job so it wasn't as arduous as it could have been. Witmore was impressed with the innovative engineering that went into the ships designs. The job would take less than half the time now that there were two of them. He had just finished the run through Jeffries Tube 11 that had been repaired by Lt. Tullian. Everything was showing green on his board. He began the run on Jeffries Tube 12. Half way through the diagnostic on that tube everything was showing green. Except there was a momentary flash to yellow on one of the communications relays then it flashed back to green again. He became curious and reran the diagnostic again. It happened again exactly the same. He ran it a third time. Again the same. It was almost as if the relays were in use and then cut back to normal when it sensed a diagnostic sensor.

He climbed slowly up the tube checking each of the relays on the way, until he reached the relay in question. He found a small device attached to it. Craig had no idea what it was, it seem to re-route power to some other part of the ship. Craig decided to remove it from the relay and take it down to engineering maybe the Chief would know what it was.

Craig rushed back to engineering with the little device still clutched in his hands. As he entered engineering he did not see Silvio at first.

“Mr Scot, where can I find the chief?” Crewmember Scot pointed to the upper balcone, “he’s up there some where”. “Thanks”.

Craig made his way up and located Silvio engaged in a heavy discussion with another engineer.

"I want to make sure we have damage control units stationed through the ship. We have a battle coming and we need to get prepaired," said Silvio.

“Excuse me, Chief? Craig said.

Silvio turned around a looked at Craig. "Yes Ensign?"

“I have been going over the diagnostics test as you requested and while I was testing the eps conduits in tubes 11 and 12 I found this”. Craig showed Silvio the device.

Silvio took the device from Craig and turned it over in is hand.

“Have you any idea what it is”.? “While testing was a momentary flash to yellow on one of the communications relays then it flashed back to green again. I reran the diagnostic 3 times. It happened again exactly the same. It was almost as if the relays were in use and then cut back to normal when it sensed a diagnostic sensor”

"This is a comm tap." said Silvio, "It is a testing device use to stress test the communicaiton relays. It should have been removed before we left Qul Tuq."

"Oh, I see, must be a new design them, I haven't seen anything like this before, Craig responded twirling the device round and round.

"If you find anymore please remove them," instructed Silvio.

"I will do so, you do not mind if I take this apart, do you?. "Is there anything more I can do, Craig asked?

Silvio was not sure why anyone would be so interested in the device. "There are better things he could be doing with this time," thought Silvio. Silvio picked up a PADD and ran through the list. "Yes, have had several complaints from the marines that their environmental systems are malfunctioning. Could you run down there and look into it please? If it is something that will take a great deal of time to fix then put it off until after our current mission. I will need everyone at their stations if we are called into battle."

”I’ll get right on it Sir, Craig responded. It will be fixed a.s.a.p. he said while walking down the stairs. He looked at the device in his hand, what Silvio did not know was that in Craigs sparetime he loved to take things apart just to see what made them work and if necessary improve the existing design.

=Science lab=

Sarik was just finished with the staff meeting. He needed to get to his own crew to tell them about the situation and what was expected fromt them. He was obviously needed to liason with the Atlanta's science officer, but at this point he would need his crew to work on something that might help the Zion get an advantage over the other ships. "Attention science crew, i have important news from the captain. As of this moment we are on our way intercepting federation ships. As science crew we have the responsiblilty to help everywhere we can, this means that all crewmen with a medical degree will report to sickbay to assist when need arises. All science crew with a security training will report to the armory, i strongly recommend that besides those marines we need some extra help especially when it comes to security systems."

The crew nodded. "For the rest of the crew, i have a special assignment. Most of us are basically researches who take time for projects, study carefully and only after careful consideration we do our research. However i will now ask something that is not orthodox. Its time to treat problem with quickness and flexibility so that we can respond fast. The ship depends on our resourcefullness to deal with problems never encoutered, they may have a wide range of variety but they are all problems you know how to deal with."

"Sir, we are now some kind of trouble shooters?"

"If you want to give it that name, yes."

"So what is our first task?"

"Well logic dictates that we cannot beam 200 people of a ship in about half a minute, its our job to find a way that we can, remember infinite combinations in infinite solutions."

He paused as he looked around, "good lets get started."

==sickbay==

As Teilani went back to her desk she noticed that Lt Witmore had forgotten one of his tools.

“Ally, Teilani said to one of the nurse, I am going down to engineering to return this, and also get some thing to eat o.k.”

“That fine Doctor”, she responded.

Teilani took the tools and headed out of sickbay, obviously she was not looking where she was going and ran right into the arms of a strong well build man.

“Excuse me miss” Ryan said in his low voice. “Can you tell me where sickbay is? I am new here and I need a medical check up since I have no medical record for the Maquis yet”

Oops, Teilani said with a smile, I bet you had never expected this, getting a warm welcome by me. I’m sorry, Teilani stuck out her hand, I’m your doctor. Please follow me.

“It wasn’t an unpleasant welcome” Ryan took her hand and shook it “Ryan Madriani, Commanding officer of the marine detachment on board” He nodded and followed her. “What is your name doctor?”

“Where are my manners, Teilani said, I’am Dr Teilani Dane, nice to meet you”. Please have a seat on that bio bed over there, Teilani pointed to biobed 1. Have you had any diseases, discomforts, allergies that we should know about.

“I’m allergic to phaser fire, but nothing else” Ryan replied as he sat down on the bed.

Is’nt everybody, Teilani responded. She took her medical tricorder and began scanning. There were some elevated levels of adrenaline but otherwise the scan revealed nothing serious. This Marine was in perfect health. Teilani began to prepare a hypospray with some booster meds just to prevent the unexpected Tell me Mr Madriani, what do you do in order to stay fit, she asked. There is a new training program on holodeck 8. maybe you want to try it out?

“Well I try putting my daughter to sleep every night that’s good for half a mile of running through my quarters and for the rest well I use holo programs, so yes I would be interested.,” He said rubbing the area where the hypospray just had been. “What does it consist of?” He sounded interested.

The Naskans version of Kung Foo.." I have written it myself and want to try it out this afternoon

“Is that an invitation doctor?” Ryan asked.

“It surely is, Teilani responded, fighting against a real person is much more interesting than holographic one”. “Besides that will prevent me disabling the safety protocols”.

Ryan smiled “Very well doctor I accept.” He hesitated. “Now I have a request for you. If you don’t mind?”

Of course not, what can I do for you, Teilani said questionably.

“Well, my daughter has developed a very nasty cough, I think its because she’s not used to living on a starship but to be on the safe side I’d like you to examine her for it.” Ryan asked it all with a rather embarrassed mixed with concern on his face. “I don’t know if it is the change or the ventilated air”

“You do not have to be embarrassed Sir, Of course I can do this for you, all in a days work”. “If you want I can drop by your quarters and check her there. This is sometimes better than having her come to sickbay.” “How old is she”?

“She’s 5 years ” Ryan said, and dropping by in the quarters would be nice. She’s still hesitating to explore the ship.”

“Well maybe our ships counsellor can help with that. She is really nice and I think your daughter might like her. Shall I make an appointment for her to meet”?

“I don’t know before you know it I’ll be called to the bridge to get her there.” Ryan sighed. “on the other hand she has enough issues to deal with, but I think I’ll ask the counsellor myself, gives me a chance to meet her?” Ryan said.

Teilani nodded, “Well I leave it up to you then to make the appointment. Anyway you will be pleased to hear that you are in good health and I have all the necessary data now on file”

“Indeed.” Ryan stood up. “Now doctor Dane, if you will excuse me, I need to meet with the captain later on and I got to unpack. At what time shall I meet you for the holodeck?”

“Well how about 16.00 hrs in holodeck 8? Teilani responded.

"Very well" He nodded. "until then" he nodded again and walked away. "Nice woman" he though to himself.

Teilani smiled as she watch the big marine guy leave. This training session could get interesting.

== runabout Euphrates==

In a matter of seconds both Charles and Sam materialized in the cramped compartment of the runabout. Sam stowed away their gear, while Charles checked what the best route was for …. Sam changed in some dry cloths and she felt her stomach rumble, she was hungry. She made her way to the little replicator and ordered a cheese sandwich.

“Can I get you anything Sir", Sam asked.

"Mmm...The same you're having would be nice and make me a special drink the N° 39", Answered Charles

Sam ordered a second sandwich and drink no 39, and brought it over to Charles.

“What do you think of all that Rex has told us Sir” Sam asked again, while she checked the helm settings. “If you don’t mind my saying it has brought up only more questions”. “I mean, why do Cardassians team up with a human. Is it only because he has brought them a cloaking device. They could have killed him and still have the device. And what does he want with the slaves?”

"I don't know though I have a theory I think he's making some kind of vessel so he can perform his revenge against the Alliance, The Federation and Capt. Hunter", stated Charles.

“I see, don’t you recon that we should sent some message to the Zion, just to let them know that we are still alive and also to let them know what we have found out sofar.

"No,I don't... We'll maintain radio silence until it's a real emergency... we don't know who might be watching us", said Charles.

“I understand, so now what is your idea about plan B Sir, Sam said with a teasing voice and a glitter in her eye.

"Yeah...", said Charles taking Sam's hand.

Sam’s cheeks flushed red, she knew it was only make-believe, but she never had much attention from any men, let alone been in an relationship. She felt a little uncomfortable especially cause she knew Charles was engaged to Melissa. Teasing and flirting was o.k. but how far should this new cover go?.

"Well Sam, first of all you must remember I'm a Betazoid, Secondly we should have a relationship going on and not pretend to have one...I know that you think of Melissa, but if you do so you'll get us killed", said Charles starting to explain her "In this business you have to feel a lot just in case we got in trouble... so the first step of this is to get comfortable with one another"

Charles looked at the beautiful girl he had in front of him and hated to do this to her but was for the best of the mission so he better enjoy it. He took her hand and pulled her closer to him and gave her a kiss.

Sam shivered. They kissed again. Sam felt her own passion, and Charles’ building. She pulled him closer. In Sam’s mind, she and Charles were alone, adrift upon the Opal sea, their bodies supported by gently undulating waves. As her desire grew, she moved her arms, her hands, sensually around his body, caressing him, sneaking her fingers through his hair. She pulled closer to him, when suddenly her mind took over again and she froze.

Sam pushed Charles back and rose from her seat trying to get her feelings and emotions under control. “Wauw, sorry Sir, she said with a trembling voice, I got carried away”. Sam looked down, she had probably gone too far and did not want to look Charles in the eyes.

"Look at me Sam... Don't see any ghosts over here it's just you and me... Imzadi", He projected his thoughts into her mind. Sam looked up.

"Don’t be afraid", he said out loud, as he moved to her. He kissed her again. The warmth of his breath, the softness of his lips, his skin, brushing against her, seemed all too real. He drew back, his face flushed, his eyes bright with desire.

"Don't go against the feeling just go with the flow", Charles said in a wisper.

Sam started to relax, as she felt Charles palm of his hand slid sensuously down the side of her neck, over the curve of her shoulder, then inside to her waist. He pulled her to him. In that instant, all thoughts of Cardassians, Captain Jenkins, faded into the void. Their two bodies were pressed together like two mangled sides of an orange. Charles pressed his mouth to her neck holding her in his arms until all her muscles relaxed and the trembling subsided.

Charles started to project feelings of warmth and calmness into Sam's mind he notoced that she had an issue with man and decided to help her as much as he can... suddenly Mellisa's memories become to fade and he started to get carred away by this girl that answered to his movments spontaneusly and passionate.

He said "Inzadi...", as they proceed to the runnabout's quarters

Stardate: 58204.14 1500

58204.14 1500

Ensign Favor rolled up from her bed to a sitting position and placed her feet on the floor. Her plantar fasciatis hurt like hell. "Time for more injections," Favor groaned aloud, but she knew that for her own health, she could only get the kertasin shots three times every 365 days. Wishful thinking again, she'd just injected her foot with the drug a scant two weeks ago, and wouldn't be able to do it again for another four months.

Limping to her bathroom, she washed her face in the sink, and heard the quiet hush of the door to her quarters opening behind her. "Damn it! What now!" she shrieked, turning around, expecting to verbally skin another intrusive, teenaged crewman.

A little human child stood in the door, a slapped look on her face. "Oh dear," Favor said. She and the child blinked at one another. The child stepped into Favor's quarters like she owned the place.

I need a drink, Favor thought.

This had to be one of the refugee children. Yes, yes it definately was. Favor recognized her from the Sick Bay. As with most medical professionals, Favor characterized and remembered her patients from their injuries. There was the "broken leg", the "blasted guts". And so on.

This one was "Baldy". She'd suffered horrible burns over her scalp, and although little tufts of hair were growing back, they looked like cheap hair plugs.

She wasn't an attractive child by any stretch, and the raw red scalp didn't help, but she sure didn't look lost, either. She reminded Favor of someone's pet, once domestic, now gone feral. Wild, but perfectly able to take care of herself. A few scars here and there, but she'd be fine. Favor never worried about the feral ones. It was the sappy ones that she knew would be eaten alive by the world.

"So, Toots. What brings you to my lair?" she asked the child with false cheer.

What she really wanted was for this little brat to get the hell out of her quarters so that she could swig something that would make her forget the screaming tendon in her foot. Wasn't someone else in charge of babysitting? It sure wasn't something Ensign Favor had volunteered for.

The girl did not reply. She simply gazed at Favor, her eyes like two bullet holes in her face.

Favor reached into a cupboard and withdrew a bottle of Ahi Paka. "The replicator just can't get this right, so whenever I'm on leave, I pick up a stash of the real deal," she explained apologetically although the girl gave no sign she even heard or cared what Favor said.

Favor sat down on her bed, the authentic bottle of fermented beverage in her hand. She longed for this kid to leave so she could drink in peace and quiet. The little warning flag in her mind went up again---the one that read, those who habitually drink alone are at high risk for substance abuse---but she brushed the thought aside.

"Come here. Let me see your head," Favor said, patting the bed next to her.

The child strolled across the room, and as Favor held the girl's chin, turning her head this way and that, eyeing the healing sores on her head, the child spoke. "I want to talk about families that don't live together," she blurted out.

Oh crud! Where was the Counselor when Favor needed her? This was her bailiwick, not the medic's! She needed to talk to the Counselor anyway, about Dr. Dane's mental freakout the other day, when she imagined seeing assassins in the Sick Bay.

The Ensign sighed. "Sure, kiddo. Go ahead, talk." Screw the cup! Favor took a long hard pull on the mouth of her bottle.

"My mother doesn't live with me," the child said.

"Oh? Why's that?"

"Because she's dead." The girl looked at Favor expectantly.

Ensign Favor tapped her fingers against her knee. "Is that right."

"Yes. She's dead."

Favor nodded slowly. "Mine's dead, too," she replied. It seemed to be the only thing to say.

The little girl nodded, and let out the breath she'd been holding. She almost seemed relieved. "So, you know."

Favor reached out and took the girl's hand in hers. "Yes," she said. "I do. I surely, surely do."

The two of them sat in silence on Favor's bed, and thought their own private thoughts about dead mothers, and families that don't live together.

Ian Hunter, Commanding Officer, [PC]

"Bridge" Ryan said. He was done unpacking. He walked out of the elevator unto the bridge. "Lets see the captains ready room is on the right." He walked straight trough. He pushed on the buzzer.

"Enter" said Hunter, standing as the MCO walked in.

He walked in slowly. He stopped and clicked his heels and saluted. "Commanding officer Marine detachment USS Zion: Major Ryan-Steven Madriani. Reporting for duty, SIR!" He straitened his back he brought his hand down. he hated this ritual.

Hunter smiled, he always admired the discipline of the marines. "You can save the formalities for admirals and commodores" he said extending his hand in welcome.

"Thank you sir." He loosened up. "Its good to be here, sir."

"We're glad to have your company on board, please, have a seat Major."

Hunter sat back down and leaned back in his chair. "It will be interesting to see how everyone gets along."

"Yes I am curious to that as well sir" Ryan sad taking the offered seat. "I have ordered them to gather in the main hall on deck 10, I'll speechify them there." Ryan said with a smile.

"Of course..." said Hunter with a wry smile.

"I agree, it is important that we cooperate with star ship crew, we need to work in symbiosis, if either party starts feeling competitive we'll need to short-circuit that right away. And well marine's have a natural tendency to compete amongst each other, and as long as its amongst themselves it's fine. Wouldn't you agree?"

"I do Major," Hunter "We'll keep lines of communications open between us, hopefully discipline won't be a problem. We need to remember the enemy is out there, not in here."

"Indeed, sir" Ryan agreed. "We need to be very cautions that things like posturing is kept to a minim, especially by the marines, I mean we are a bit stuck with defectors that have defected to us just because they thought they would get a lot more 'kicks' and 'action' than with the federation. When they discover they don't they may take it out on the crew." Ryan carefully explained his fears to the captain.

"Have you been briefed on this mission Major?" asked Hunter leaning forward inquisitively.

"Not to that great an extend, only that, a ship with refugees from the federation, containing several top scientist are being chased by the federation to stop them from seeking safety with the Maquis. Why I don't know"

Ryan looked to see if this was a bit accurate. "Do we know what kind of ships are casing them sir?"

Hunter nodded handing Ryan a PADD with all the data. "We understand 2 federation ships and a cardassian.

"Ok," Ryan paused a moment as he thought how to phrase the question "is there any chance of marine involvement, based on the information at this time?" He had to ask.

"Let's hope not," sighed Hunter, "but I expect based on the account of Cardassians with the Kittyhawk, there could be boarding parties. In any confrontation with the federation, I wouldn't be surprised if they hostiles take captives back to their ships. There could certainly be hostage situations. I would expect a messy fight."

"Very well sir. I will tell them" Ryan prepared to stand up. "If there is nothing else sir?" he asked.

Hunter stood up, "No major, familiarize yourself with the Zion also and coordinate with our tactical officer. We could find intruders on board too during this confrontation.

Ryan stood up and nodded. "Until soon captain" He saluted again and turned around. "lets inspect the troops" He thought to himself as he left the Captain's ready room.

=Main hall deck 10=

Ryan took his MCO coat and putted it on as he entered the podium. He went to stand in the middle 16 officer walked up behind him. “Ladies and gentleman” He started “My name is Major Ryan-Steven Madriani. Most people call me Rusty Ryan or Major Rust. I will be your commanding officer here on the USS Zion. The only men above me are the captain and the XO as far as you all are concerned.” He walked up en down on the stage while his wide coat swung behind him. “You will all receive the appropriate data regarding to whom you report. I will have 4 squad commander with 50 people each under there command. These are the following: Lt Lorance, Lt Kayens, Lt. Liv’och and Lt. Palin.” He pointed at the 3 men and the woman. “they will be your first contact point regarding roster, training, posting and team composition.”

He looked at his padd. “Now regarding the interaction with the rest of the crew of the USS Zion: You are all marines, that means you are accustomed to strict discipline, the star ship crew is less strict in terms of internal relations. I just come from a meeting with the captain and he agrees with me that we need to work in symbiosis with the rest of the crew. I shall therefore NOT tolerate posturing, competitive behavior, fights or showing off. I hope, and I really do, that you will mix with them, I know that you all have the tendency to stick to your own kind, but I hope you will help them, some of you have excellent engineering capabilities, when they are short handed go and offer your help, It will be appreciated. Some of you are medically trained; during a medical crisis, maybe the CMO can use your help. Working together that is what is important. Because in the end we are all here to fight the same enemy, to free the same cultures and people. In the end it all comes down the functioning of the ship and our functioning as a team. That is why I want to know if you have serious issues with a collogue, because I need to rely on the fact that you will give him or her cover when he/she need it.” He paused hoping the message would sink in.

“Now I have had a meeting with the captain, he says that there is an possibility that the Cardassians send on boarding party’s. The specifics I will discuss with your squad Co and they will tell you where you are posted during the battle, 1 squad will be here in case we decide to a boarding party and we need people fast. Now for the rest I have an open door policy and everyone is welcome if they have a problem they don’t want to discuss with there Squad CO, you can always come to me.” He smiled. “Ok now Dismissed!” He saluted and all 200 marines saluted back.

He marched into the marine conference room with his XO and the Squad Co’s. “Ok everyone have a seat.” He said as he walked to the head of the table. He started again this time on a more friendly tone. “Ok everyone this is how we are going to do It.: Lt. Palin” He looked at the short and friendly looking man who started out as a sniper 15 years ago. “You will be in charge of the civilian area, just before red alert you are expected to make sure all children and civilian parents are brought to the class room.” He knew would be very precise In that cause he had 2 children of his own. “You will use 25 marines for that the other 25 will be posted on deck 8 and guard sickbay.” “aye sir” Palin said in a British accent. “ Lt Kayens your squad will be protecting engineering, and the tactical locations like torpedo storage.” He looked at ex body boulder. “Yes sir.” He looked at Lt. Lorance “Lt Lorance your squad will patrol the ship together with the security teams.” “Aye sir.” “And you Lt Liv’och”He looked at the klingon “Your team will be located in the main hangar with full body amour and weaponry in case we will be forming boarding party’s” Liv’ochs squad was 75 percent klingon. “Yes sir.” “quapla” Ryan said. “That’s it for now everyone make ready get a quick shower, give your team the last target practice, last orders etc. Anything not clear?” He asked “Ok I and Captain Philipe Cardenas will join the patrols and man he bridge console for the department. Liv’och, Lorrance and Cardenas I have an meeting with the doctor to test out a potential useful holodeck program, I’d like you to join me.” He said. They nodded and they rushed of to make the meeting with the doctor.

== Holodeck 1==

The creature appeared to be insectile - five meters tall, eighth long limbs, each on ending in a two pronged horny claws. The claws at the end of the foremost limbs were more flexible than the others and were holding heavy clubs that looked like they might have been rubbed or shaped somehow for easier grasping.

The insect aimed one of the clubs at Teilani's head but she sidestepped a half-meter to the left. The club head was momentarily buried in the sandy soil and Teilani leapt up onto the creature's back, then took a swipe with her kar'takin at the soft, flexible part where two sections of the insect’s chitnous armor overlapped. The blade bit deep and the joint spurted a thick, purplish ichor. The insect made a strange metallic noise then tore the club out of the soil. Teilani back flipped of the creature and landed softly, knees bent, then tumbled to the side as the club descended again.

The creature, which apparently had poor peripheral vision, didn't see where its opponent had gone and issued another piercing cry as the kar'takin landed again. It reared, rolling itself up onto only four legs, waving the claws and clubs of its forelimbs but finding no target.

Teilani stepped lightly onto the insect's back again, took three quick strides up its dorsal ridge, and landed a heavy blow on the crown of its head. The carapace didn't creak, but what passed for the creature's central nervous system must have been under that part of the shell, because the blow staggered it, its sapling thick legs buckling beneath it.

Teilani was so focused on the creature that she did not hear that the holodeck doors were opening. Ryan Madriani and some of his crew members were entering. As they entered they found themselves looking down on a dozen meters into a bowl shaped pit with a floor of loose soil and walls of broken rock, below them Teilani was fighting a nightmare.

Suddenly muscles contracted, the creature shudder again and spikes shot out in every direction, some embedding themselves in the loose soil, other shattering against the shapely walls. Some of the marines were a bit staggered by the look of the program, but did not say anything, even Ryan flinched in spit of himself, startled by the simulated carnage.

Teilani leapt backwards, correctly judging the trajectory of the half dozen projectiles that were heading in her directs. Se slipped between the two highest-flying spikes, and then dropped to the ground directly in front of the bug's great head. She raised her blade high and Ryan braced himself for the sight of split carapace or splattered brain matter, but instead he heard only "End program".

A momentary shimmer and Ryan suddenly found himself on the same level as Teilani, in the otherwise empty holosuite.

"Good day Sir, I didn't hear you all come in, Teilani said, brushing the sweat from her forehead, while she glanced at all the Marines.

"Well I guess you where kind of tied up." Ryan said "And please your not a marine call me Ryan." Ryan looked at her. "Quite an interesting fight you where pulling of there."

“You call me Red then”. “This was just for fun, I hope this program did not scare you too much”, Teilani said with a smile. "I have just finished writing it so feel free to try it out". It has 8 levels of difficulty.

"I think I'll start on 1 then" Ryan said with hesitation, he wasn't in the mood to start fighting huge bugs.

“I was just going to install another new training program on the holodeck, there are still some flaws in it but it is a nice program. The Naskans version of Kung Foo.." remember?

"O this wasn't The Naskans version of Kung Foo..?" Ryan said sarcastic. "Thank god" he thought to himself.

Teilani shook her head. =Computer activate program Dane Alpha 2=

With a momentary shimmer the holosuite changed into a Japanese dojo, complete with geisha's performing the difficult tea ceremony.

They were alone in the center of the room standing on a mat, surrounded by the other Marines. Her eyes locked for a moment on the handsome Marine Commander, who had his arms crossed and just shook his head in amusement.

"Anyway, My point is...there is little point of doing this if nothing is learned..." She laughed, taunting him, "Well Ryan, are you up for it."

"Ok...I will show you something, I think you can find it useful...Go ahead, hit me or lung at me, its up to you...I won't hurt you I promise." Teilani said, taunting and teasing.

Ryan stood still for a moment, deciding if he should, "Come on...your not afraid of a woman teaching you something are you” ? “Don't tell me your pride will get the best of you." You might .. Before she could finish saying her sentence, he made a perfect move directly for her rib cage. Jumping into the air, she let his fist hit her hip just before she grabbed the back of his head, using it as leverage to endup just beside him, then allowed herself to go limp, using her body weight to pull him to the ground. She used her other arm to protect her chest from his landing... they just laid there a moment... Teilani breathed heavy, "Now, if I had decided I didn't like you, I would have snapped your neck and crunched the inhabitants of your lower beltline."

Ryan rolled over and laughed "Very impressive" He looked at her and laughed again. "I have to confess I don't know that much about Kung foo. How did you do that?"

She got back up, "Its simple, mind over matter...well...actually more like I cheated...but after all, no one ever said fighting fair was the smartest thing in the world. You try..." She said offering her hand to help him up. Teilani noticed that several of the other Marines were trying not to laugh.

Ryan looked at the hand and ignored her. He threw his legs up and bended his back, landing on his feed standing straight. "Doctor, prepare for the unexpected." He turned his back on her and walked away, he swiftly turned around and ran up to her jumping up and giving her a kick in the stomach, not to hard. He took hold of her shoulders and used them to push himself up and jump over her. He landed on his back putting his feet between her lower legs spreading them and causing her to fall on her face. He jumped up again and looked at her. "Wondering how I could be so fast doctor?" He grinned "you could have stopped me and break my ankle." He smiled again. "you just weren't fast enough this time.

“Well I have to work on it then, Teilani said laughing. She certainly was surprised by this move.

"I suggest we call it a draw." Ryan extended his hand to help her up. "Nevertheless I bet some of my marines could learn from you, you being a doctor will now where to hit."

As Teilani accepted his hand to get up she balled her other hand into a little fist and in one smooth move getting up she hit Ryan directly on his right jaw. “Never judge a book by its cover, Ryan, she stated.

"Well" Ryan said shaking his head to make it stop ringing. "You’re quite the little fighter." He turned to his men. "And that is why I have no ego, if I had it would be severely bruised." He stood up. "Well that was quite the lesson miss Dane. Now please excuse me, fell free to come around and challenge me again, sometime."

Teilani brushed back her hair, before she responded. “You can bet on it Ryan”.

"I'll be seeing you later on I presume?" Ryan had won his calmness back.

“Of course, I still need to check your daughters cough”, Teilani responded. “Well carry on guys, she said with a smile, “Computer exit”.

With the familiar hiss the holodeck doors appeared and with a last glance Teilani left.

== counsellor office==

Zoei leaned forward in her chair. Her right hand spanned her lower back, fingers massaging the knots of tension bunching around her spine.Slowly she worked the pressure points, pain easing slowing from her body. As the ship moved closer into the danger zone, this would surely get worse.

Glancing quickly at her Padd, she took notice of the next name on her appointment calendar. Dr Teilani Dane was coming in for a follow up appointment. If the stress level was high in the counseling arena, there was no doubt it was off the charts in Sick Bay.

Reaching her fingers toward the ceiling, Zoei rose gingerly from her chair. A few more slow stretches and her back cracked into position. Long strides carried her quickly across her office. "Ice water, very tall, and a slice of lemon" Zoei said, her voice raspy. It had been a long day of sessions.

The ice water slid down her throat, cooling the enflamed membranes. The zest of the lemon tingled across her tongue and the citrus smell tickled her nose.

Glancing at her chronometer, she realized 10 minutes has passed in her reverie. Time to get back to work, Dr. Dane was due to be here in 15 minutes. Barring an emergency in sick bay, Dr. Dane would most likely be arriving any minute. It was nice to deal with someone who felt it was important to be punctual.

Halfway back to her desk, the doorbell chimed. Turning on her heel, Zoei called "Enter." Dr. Dane stood in the doorway. Her brow appeared To be furrowed in a way Zoei hadn't seen before. Stress, personal or work, Was levying a heavy toll on the doctor.

"Good evening Counselor, thanks for seeing me on such a short notice, Teilani said.

"Any time, Red, you know my door is always open."

Teilani walked over to the couch and tried to make her self comfortable. It was no use, she was to agitated and started passing up and down the office. Finally she stood still, wearingly looking out of the window.

"You didn't say what you wanted to meet with me regarding. What is on your mind?"

" You know Patia, you do not mind if I call you by your first name do you"? Teilani asked.

"That is fine."

"As you know I took the Oath of Hipocrates to help everybody, whether it is friend or foe, anybody who is in need of medical attention. But I am afraid that because of what has happened in the past I might not be able to maintain my objectivity towards the enemy".

"That is a valid fear, Red. You had a tough go of it with them."

Finally Teilani sank into a chair, hiding her head in her hands, mumbling, "I becomes more difficult each day to control the hatred towards the Federation, Cardassians etc." "To be honest I do not know what I will do if they bring in a wounded Cardassian or a Starfleet crew". "Will I help them or? Do I need to say more."

Teilani looked up at Patia, "Help me, counselor".

"First, what do you want the outcome of this session to be?"

Teilani was so agitated that she snarled at Patia, I don't know, you are the counselor here, you tell me!

Zoei leaned back in her chair. Eyes narrowing slightly, she waited in silence for the doctor's next action.

She stood up again and started passing round the office again. Again she stopped at the window, her face became blank, her eyes seemed to stare in a distance, trying to fight off the upcoming panic.

"I'm sorry Patia, Teilani said, I should not have shouted at you, it's not your fault. Its just that I need a focus point, something to hold on too in this upcoming crisis" .

"I am a too good a doctor to let anybody die, whether he is a Cardassian or not, I could not live with myself knowing that I let someone die even though I could have saved him.

"So you know, Doctor Dane, although I am the counselor, as the patient, you are the most important person in this room. Some of the questions I ask you may seem silly, but the best way for you to reach peace is for you to attain it yourself. I am here to help you with the journey, but I cannot be the dictator of the directions you take. Teilani nodded she knew Patia was right, and it was wrong of her to snap at the counselor.

Now, have you had a focus point you have used in the past?" Patia asked.

"Teilani looked at Patia and smiled, as a matter a fact I had, she suddenly remembered."When I had to cramp for my medical exams and had the feeling that I could not make it, I went to a park near my dorm. Everyday there was this monk rearranging the pebbles near the lake. I asked him one time if he did not got tired of doing that every day. No he said, if you look at the way each pebble lies on the ground, and as you can see they are all the same, same colour, same size no exeptions and you focus on that, than one day you may reach enlightenment." He handed me a pebble that day, but I must have lost it cause I have never seen it anymore.

"So if you ask me about a focus point, I must admit that this white pebble got me through my exams".

Teilani sat back down on a chair, her face softened, the frown on her forehead disappeared. "Silly isn't it the effect a white pebble can have.

"Not silly at all, Red. If I had an industrial replicator, I would help you get a replacement. Allow me to make a suggestion. Since you know the white pebble worked for you, as a focus point, I would suggest you either ask Silvio to assist you with replicating one, or survey your quarters. What small object brings you a feeling of peace? Is there a picture, souvenir, small remembrance? If there is, you might not need a new pebble.

"All my personal belongings were destroyed during the attack on the Kittyhawk, so I have nothing left, Patia", Teilani replied.

"My mistake, Doctor. I apologize for my inconsideration."

Suddenly the chirping to Teilani's combadge interrupted them. "Doctor, please report to sickbay". "On my way", Teilani responded.

Teilani stood up and walked to the door and as she turned around she said, "I will follow your advice Patia, I will go and ask Silvio if he can replicate a pebble for me, thanks for hearing me out, and again, I am sorry I shouted to you". "No hard feelings I hope?".

"No hard feelings, Doctor. Come back any time."

Zoei watched the doctor stride purposefully from the room before turning to her computer to begin dictating her notes.

==Counselor’s office==

The very atmosphere of the ship seemed to be on stand by, as if the entire crew was holding its collective breath. From all she had read and heard, this was a common occurrence prior to a planned entry into warfare. It wasn ’t something she had ever experienced first hand. The chronometer ticked away the seconds, her heart keeping beat with the steady clicking. Glancing around her comfortable office, Zoei wondered if the rest of the crew felt the same type of anticipation, edged by anxiety. Chuckling at her foolishness, she realized she was relatively protected in her secure office. The remainder of the crew was undoubtedly at a higher level of awareness than she felt. The tension she felt from the crew had been building all day. The sheer volume of emotions being emitted from crew members made it difficult to discern the individual voices for the dull roar of the crowd on board.

Walking the perimeter of her office, she noted all was in order. The upcoming days and weeks were bound to have this office seeing more patients suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. It was important that the room remain orderly, yet serene. The calm in the eye of the storm was to be her mantra.

Lifting her hair from the back of her neck and letting it fall back to her shoulders, Zoei contemplated the décor of her office. The scent of gardenia lilies wafted around her. The lilies immediately brought a picture of her mother to her mind. In her last message, her mother had mentioned a new technique she was trying with her stitchery. Next time she wrote, she would ask her mother if she could formulate a design, incorporating her new mantra. She would like to display it in her office, in an unobtrusive way. Properly incorporated into a design, no one else need to know what it says, but it should still be able to give a sublimial message of calmness. It was too bad she hadn’t thought of this before she took this new posting.

Zoei strode from her desk to the doorway, pausing to straighten an already perfectly arranged throw on the back of the visitor’s sofa in the sitting area. A final pat to the sofa’s throw pillows, and she was done. The best place for her to be now was her quarters. If anyone on the bridge needed her, she would be available. Her stomach rumbled. With a quick change of mind, she decided a stop at Miranda’s for a little soup would be in order, before retiring to her quarters.

At the door, she glanced back again, almost compulsively. All was still in order. “Computer, lights off,” zoei said as she stepped into the hall.

Miranda’s

The crush of people at Miranda’s was evident as Zoei opened the door. Taking short, quick steps to avoid contact with various crew members milling about, she wondered if she would be able to find a seat, or if she would be able to be served. Finally reaching the bar, Zoei smiled a greeting to Miranda. “It looks like everyone who is not at their duty station has congregated here tonight, Miranda.”

“Yes, we are pretty busy tonight, but we are only serving food. Intoxicating beverages are not allowed during yellow alerts, “ Miranda replied.

“I would imagine most people are here for the companionship, not the libations,” Zoei winked.

“Indeed. What can I get you, Counselor?”

“A bowl of your famous Broccoli Cheese soup, if you don’t mind, and a”, Zoei started.

“Glass of raspberry iced tea with two fresh raspberries,” Miranda completed the thought.

Chuckling, Zoie nodded.

“Coming right up, Counselor,” Miranda turned away to the replicator, placing the order.

Zoei surveyed the crowd. The only apparent vacant seat in the house was at a little two person table clear across the room. Glancing at the occupant of the table, Zoei noticed it was Ensign Favor.

“Go ahead and have a seat with Ensign Favor. I will bring out your food when it is ready,” Miranda smiled.

Sidling through a mob of young looking crew members, Zoei aimed for Ensign Favor’s table. For the amount of stress the crew was under, the crowd was remarkably in control of their emotions. Even those not at their duty stations were obviously ready for battle. A quick elbow to her back reminded her to keep moving.

“Ensign, is this seat taken?” Zoei smiled at Favor. Her friend’s hair was growing in. It still wasn’t a substantial growth, but it wasn’t the bald look she had recently been sporting.

Favor smiled at the familiar face. She tipped her bejeweled head towards the chair, the spiky locks formed into dark chestnut daggers, each tipped with a dangling crystal. "Howdy, Cookie," she said. "Long time no see. I've been cooling my heels in the slammer if you can imagine that. What a vacation! Did you get my holo-postcard?" She smiled when she thought of the video postcard transmission that she'd sent to her friend, that of a small cartoon prisoner, garbed in a black and white striped suit, banging a cup against iron bars. "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen, nobody knows my sorrow," Favor warbled, and then winked at the Counselor.

Chuckling softly, Zoei returned the wink. “You did have quite the interesting leave this time around. I have to say, I am quite relieved to have led such a boring existence in your absence. The fortunate side of my quiet stay is I have caught up on all of my paperwork. I can tell that makes you so envious of my fun.” Zoei winked again, while glancing at Favor ’s head.

Ensign Favor shook her head, and the crystals tinkled. "Do you like these? It's a Risan hair embellishment. Girls are given these head crystals as a rite of passage along with a makeup bag, when they turn sixteen." The hair crystals, each dangling from an invisible chain, held the colored lights of the place.

The Counselor couldn't decide whether or not Favor was joking about the makeup bag. “This is the first time I have seen you wear those adornments, Favor. Is there a special occasion?”

"Frankly, there is." The Ensign swigged several generous gulps from her beer. Bah! It was swill! She hated this faux hooch! Just another sacrifice that a military officer had to make for the war effort, Favor guessed, since she wasn't allowed the real thing during a yellow alert.

"I'm celebrating my freedom," Favor said. "And right now, I'm hoping to Gilead that the captain doesn't have me court-martialed. I was gone past my leave period, but that's because that rotten Nelken didn't post my bail bond in a timely manner." wadded up a piece of lint and flicked it at the counselor.

“Here is your dinner, Counselor,” Miranda said.

Smiling her thanks at Miranda, Zoei pulled the soup closer to her. Stirring it idly, she eyed the lint ball that had landed on the table just in front of her. “I think the Captain will be quite busy with the battle we are about to engage in, so, this could be your lucky day. I am not advocating spending your leave time in prison, mind you, but your timing may be all right this time.” Zoei winked again. “Prove yourself indispensable, while you are waiting for the Captain to schedule a meeting with you.” Suddenly, she reached the table and flicked the lint back at Favor.

Favor grinned, and tossed the lint away. She really needed to get back to Sick Bay, she knew, but she had missed the Counselor. She rose to leave, and impulsively flung one arm around the Counslor, hugging her fiercely. "It's good to be back, Counselor," she said. "Gilda, my jail cellmate, was nice, and all, but as I said to her, Gilda, I said, I know Patia Zoei, and Gilda, I'm sorry, but you're no Zoei!"

Then she jammed her hands in her pockets, and whistling, crystals a-tinkle, she strode across the dining room, and headed for the hatch.

Watching Favor leave the room, Zoei savored the flavor of the broccoli and cheese soup. The taste reminded her of home. The conversation with Favor had reminded her of her days back at boarding school. Some days she really missed those girls. It seemed likely, though, that Favor could be a friend like that. Surprisingly enough, even on the verge of war, she was at peace in a way she hadn’t been in a very long time.

==USS Atlant -- Bridge== "Open hailing frequencies to the USS Zion."

"Hailing frequencies open, ma'am." Misty responded.

The face of captain Hunter appeared on the screen.

Hunter stepped forward, "Good evening Captain, what is your status?"

"Well captain we are ready to engage the enemy, ETA in 5 minutes."

We're coming in on our approach vector also. In approximately 7 we'll be in position to begin beaming refugees off. Marines are standing by if they are needed. Do you have any additional information?"

"As far as we can determine now, the federation ships have engaged the freighters. We have received distress call from the freighters that they are being attacked but they won't hold out much longer. They can't outrun them."

"tactical approach, Lt Renton?"

Tom looked at his panel and thought a minute. "I think it would be a good to evacuate the freighters and engage in holding of the federation ships a first. I propose one of our ships will evacuate while the other will cover them. "

"Hailey turned back to the view screen, "Hunter, I suggest Offensive Manuver Alpha 3" Hunter nodded "I agree."

"Our tactical analysis determine that there are three federation ships approaching." Renton says.

"Our scanners have picked up some traces of chroniton particles. We think there might be a cloaked cardassian vessel in the area."

Gadhar smiled. "It might certainly be possible since we found out about the trade in weapons the cardassians engaged in with the romulan rogue-organization. I think we must be prepared, just in case..."

Hunter exchanged glances with Wright and then nodded at Hailey.

"Agreed, we have our science officer working together with tactical to determine if there are ways to detect the cloak."

"I think we can give you a head start." said Hunter, turning to Sarik, "Send Atlanta tactical the information you collected regarding the ionized chroniton wake."

“Ionized Chroniton wake?” The captain looked at the vulcan.

Sarik approached the screen, “a highly localized ion distortion occurs whenever a cloaked ship is moving. The distortion is temporal but we have configured our scanners to look for those local distortions. I have load the information to your computer, I think you will find the data suitable to trace the cardassians.”

“Data received”, Renton said. “Well Gadhar looks like you and Zen have something interesting to study after this battle is over.”

“Thank you captain.” She looked at the conn who mentioned they were alsmost there. “Well we should then compliment your data with the following information. I have done some information about those federation ships, the three ships coming up are two excelsior upgrades USS Horatio and USS Bezar and one sabre class, the USS Linux. You should concentrate on the large cruiser, USS Bezar, targe their deflector, that is their weakest spot. I will take care of the other two. Here is some data, your tactical officer would love to see.

“May the spirits watch over us.” Jennifer smiled as she said that. An old Trill expression.

Hunter nodded, "Good luck Jennifer, Zion out."

The outer space was shown again at the screen.

After her skirmish with Marine commander Ryan Teilani was in her quarters taking a quick sonic shower and changing her uniform. She was tired and her muscles ached but she needed to be at her best. She knew that sickbay was ready to receive any casualties and had left the finalization of this task in Ensign Favor's capable hands.

On last thing she needed to do was to visit a little patient, namely Commander Ryan's daughter. Teilani had no children but she knew how to work with them thanks to being a babysitter for her cousins when she was younger.

Computer replicate me a cuddly toy according to the following specifications. Teilani entered some specifics and in a matter of minutes a brown fluffy teddy bear appeared.

Teilani smiled, it reminded her about her childhood. Together with her tricorder, medkit and the teddy bear she walked out the door to the Commander's quarters. Luckily he was on the same deck as hers. Slowly Teilani checked the door numbers, 51G, 53G ah here it is 55G.

Teilani pressed the door chime.

"Alice stand still!!!" Ryan yelled chasing his daughter through the room. She was jumping over chairs and crawled under table's. She giggled and taunted him as she crawled under yet another table. He jumped and grabbed her. He took her dress and putted it on her. "So was that so hard?" she ignored him, the only reason she didn't wanted to wear this dress is because her mother made it. Ryan heard the door. "Enter"

Good evening Ryan, I came to check up on your daughter, I hope I am not too late?

"No not at all I was just packing her bag, she's going to the Palin's in 51g during the red alert." Ryan said. 'Please come in. "Alice a visitor for you!"

Hello, Teilani said, what's your name?

"Alice.." Alice said shy. Teilani sank through her knees so that she was at the same height as the little girl. "Hoi my name is Teilani".

"How old are you?" Alice stretched her hand out and showed 5 fingers.

Your five years, golly you're a big girl already. "You know I had a visitor this afternoon". Teilani showed the little girl the brown teddy bear.

"This is Mr Wiggles, and he's been telling me that you are not feeling well? Do you mind if I check this. I promise it will not hurt"

Ryan leaned on the back of his chair enjoying himself immensely. "Ok" Alice said shy and cachous. Teilani showed her the medical tricorder, "This little device will show me exactly why you are coughing, o.k.?

"Don't you only cough when you are sick." Alice said on her guard. "That's true but sometimes there are some other reasons" Teilani responded, when I'm finished you can scan me, if you want"

"I don't know how to scan" Alice said. Teilani smiled, well when we have some more time I will teach you.

"Just let the doctor scan you dear it wont hurt" Ryan said as he kneeled next to her. "If your brave I'll give you an ice-cream 2 rounds of chocolate. "3" she said. Ryan smiled proudly. "Deal" he looked at Teilani "go ahead"

Teilani scanned the little girl's throat and chest area. It took her about 5 minutes to analyse the data. Alice", she said, the girl looked up. I'm gonna talk to your daddy now ok". Alice nodded.

"There is medically nothing wrong with her, Ryan but go easy on the chocolate, Teilani said. Teilani hesitated; she did not want to say bluntly that the little girl was probably homesick. "Have you ever considered a change of scenery, other than a starship? I know you want to keep her close to you but being on a starship does not do anything good for her.

"I see" Ryan said. Alice was already pulling his jacket. "I want my ice-cream now, you promised me ice-cream" "tatatatatata" Ryan said in a rapid tempo telling her to be still. "computer 3 times chocolate ice cream." The replicator hissed and a coup appeared. Alice ran to the replicator and grabbed it out and ran to her room. Ryan turned to Teilani "She's just homesick then?"

"I am afraid so, Ryan, has she made any friends whilst she is on board, there are other children present?." You might want to talk to our counsellor, she might be able help your daughter feel more at home here".

"I will contact her." Ryan said as he walked to a case hanging on the wall. He opened the doors and took out a bottle of wine. "Care to join me for a toast before the battle doctor." He smiled "Don't worry its alcohol free."

"I would love to, Teilani put her tricorder and medkit on the table and walked over to the seating area. She tucked her legs under her as she tried to find a comfortable spot on the couch.

The chairs are more comfortable. Ryan pointed at the very ugly chairs. He opened the bottle and filled 2 glasses. He handed her a glass "To surviving this mess."

Teilani moved to one of the chairs while accepting the glass of wine. Cheers, she responded.

"Its Bajoran spring wine, very old and nice." He changed the subject "How's sickbay coming along?" He asked as he sad down and took a drink.

"We are ready to receive any casualties if necessary, oh and holodeck 8 is of limits for now, we have converted to an extra medical facility.

"Fine, I have had my first department meeting a few hours ago." Ryan took drink and emptied his glass.

"You remind me of something, Teilani said as she rose from her seat, I have a crew meeting in half an hour.

"Very well doctor I should go as well I need to make a few inspections before we go to red alert, and I need to bring Alice to miss palin." He said as he guided her to the door.

Thanks for the wine, Ryan Teilani said as she walked out the door.

"Good bye doctor, see you in the near future." Ryan said. As the doors closed he turned to his daughters room. "Alice its time to go, daddy need to go to work!" He prepared for yet an other chase.

=USS Zion Bridge=

The USS Zion and the USS Atlanta, two of the Maquis best ships closed rapidly on the the freighters seeking asylum. Not yet in range, Hunter stood up, mentally preparing for the battle ahead.

He turned to the tactical officer, ´Westfall, status'?

"Sir, the ship's company is at Yellow Alert at present, I recommend we escalate to full Red Alert. All Stations are manned, All weapon systems are loaded, shields at maximum, modulation at maximum. All weapons crews are at ready status now. Sick bay reports ready to receive casualties, Major Madrani reports four squads have teamed with Zion security staff, they're already deployed and ready to engage, one boarding party is on standby if needed.

The five freighters are continuing to execute Defensive Pattern Alpha Three, as per the instructions relayed to them with the deployment formation signalled from the USS Atlanta.

The fifth ship is a freighter, USS Eagle, has extensive damage to both warp nacelles, her engines are failing, shields at 10% and falling quickly.

The imminent danger is to the USS Eagle, under attack from the USS Bezar, an Excelsior-B Class Federation Starship, standard weapons and defensive armament. There's a Sabre Class Ship, the USS Lynx, being engaged by the USS Atlanta. and an Excelsior Class ship, the USS Horatio, which has not engaged the freighters, or targeted us. I suspect they may be playing decoy for the Cardassian ship, wherever it is...hoping we'll take the bait and engage them.

Some distance away, a 5th freighter, the USS Eagle, is being assaulted by an excelsior class ship, the USS Bezar. The USS Eagle's engines are failing and sheilds are down to 10%

"´Keep an eye out for that that reported Cardassian ship. It could be lurking cloaked and hail the USS Bezar Mr. Westfall, ´

"Hailing USS Bezar Captain Hunter, on all Standard Federation Frequencies *in the clear*".

"USS Bezar: This is the USS Zion of the Maquis Alliance. You are ordered to immediately cease and desist your engagement of the freighters in this sector, and return to Federation Space". You are declared to be enemy combattants, and will be engaged if you fail to comply". Ensign Westfall's tone of voice was cold.

"Captain Hunter, Sir, Incoming Signal from the USS Bezar, they are responding," Westfall said: "On main Viewscreen".

With a look of recognition, a lanky young man stood up from the command chair and approached the viewscreen. ´Captain Hunter, your reputation precedes you. I am Captain Dodeson. Please be advised this is a federation matter. Withdraw immediately.

Hunter looked at Wright and then back at the Captain of the USS Bezar Dodeson couldn't have been more than 25 or 28.

Wright managed to keep a grave look on his face, however, he was shocked to see such a 'child' commanding a Federation vessel.

The young captain stared back at Hunter with every effort to look tough.

Hunter folded his arms, ´negative Captain Dodeson, we are here to provide escort at the request of these ships. Stand down immediately and return to Federation Space.´ said Hunter.

´These ships are traitors to the Federation and are property of the federation. Withdraw now or suffer the consequences", Dodeson replied.

Hunter shook his head, ´Dodeson, your on a hundred year old ship that has been taken out of mothballs. You don't stand a chance. Don't risk the lives under your command".

´Our ship may be old but our weapons are the newest systems. You've been warned Captain.'

"Captain Hunter, The USS Bezar Sir, has changed course to intercept the Zion and is charging weapons. They will be attack ready in 75 seconds Sir, they are now designated by Tactical as Alpha Target." I'm going to inform USS Atlanta we are engaging the USS Bezar as our Alpha target.

"Battle stations Westfall," Hunter said taking his seat.

"Aye Aye Captain Hunter," Westfall acknowledged the order.

"All hands, Red Alert and to Battle Stations", Westfall's voice was heard ship-wide over all the communication channels.

" They are firing on us," Westfall stated. "Very old Mark V torpedos, probably from the Constitution Class. They're museum pieces now, but they'll still do the freighters major Damage, Sir".

"Evasive maneuvers pattern omicron-6," ordered Hunter.

The Ancient torpedos impacted the Zion's shields which caused the ship to lurch a bit. Wright looked down at his console and wated the damage assements roll in. There was no serious damage reported. "No serious damage being reported Sir." said Wright. Hunter nodded.

"Helm, bring us about to 280 mark 7," said Hunter.

"Westfall execute pattern echo-alpha-1, target weapons and propulsion," said Hunter

"Engaging pattern Echo-Alpha-1, Aye-Aye Sir," Westfall acknowledged and simultaneously executed weapons fire from the forward phaser array, hitting the warp nacelles, and knocking out the Excelsior-B's ancient phaser array.

"Status Mr. Westfall?" Captain Hunter asked.

"The Zion's shielding is modulating at random high frequencies, we're at 97.3 percent and recycling quickly Captain Hunter. Their phaser arrays are off-line, although their photon torpedo tubes continue to fire. All our weapon systems are operational and armed.

"The USS Bezar is venting plasma, warp engines offline, maneuvering thrusters only, no impulse engines. Numerous hull breaches, on all decks, she continues to fire torpedoes, Sir".

The USS Eagle's shields just dropped, they may be inoperable. Captain Hunter, I'm seeing multiple transporter signatures from the USS Bezar, now that the USS Eagle's shields are down, they are reporting a boarding party heavily armed, phaser rifles, stun grenades, she's definitely being boarded by hostiles, weapons fire in Engineering, Science, Tactical, Armoury, the USS Eagle still has impulse power, but Warp Drive is down."

"Hail the Bezar," said Hunter

"Aye-Aye Captain", "USS Bezar, this is the USS Zion, you are ordered to surrender. Stand down and prepare to be boarded".

Dodeson's image appeared on the screen. He stood surrounded by smoke and eps conduits dripping sparks. Over head panels dangled by wires with twisted pieces of metal. Dodeson was bleeding from his ears and mouth and was burned about his face. ´We won't surrender Captain. will will destroy the traitors one way or another".

"You leave me no choice then," said Hunter. "Good-bye Captain Dodeson".

Hunter took a deep breath. "Westfall, terminate the Bezar". The Zion launched 4 torpedoes which smashed into the saucer section of the USS Bezar, and then detonated. "Torpedoes away, Captain. Sensors report no survivors. The Bezar has been destroyed". Westfall stated the obvious, for the official record. When the blinding light dispersed, a debris cloud filled with sparks of plasma was all that was left.

"Helm, bring us within transporter range, on the double," said Hunter.´Aye-aye," said the flight officer.

Hunter tapped the comm button on his console, ´Major Madriani, the USS Eagle has been boarded, your services will be needed. We'll be within transporter range in"...?

"One minute," replied the flight officer.

"One minute," echoed Hunter.

As Rusty scrambled his marines into the large cargo transporter, Hunter watched as the remains of the Excelsior fizzled away.

==Bridge==

Hunter looked down at his comm panel, Madriani was signaling.

He pressed the button, "Go ahead Madriani."

Madriani replied, we're ready to beam out.

"Ok team head out." Ryan shouted through the room. "Madriani to Captain acknowledged, we are on our way." Ryan walked toward the transporter. "Ok we need to save as many civilians as possible. Be sure that you only get hostile federation marines, Weapons on Kill. Engage" He told the transporter officer. All became a white light.

Hunter says, "Acknowledged Major."

Hunter looks over to Riaan, go down and assist with the evacuation efforts.

Riaan headed off to assist, but first she needed two security officers to stand watch on deck eleven and needed to drop in and see Teilani.

Riaan enters the turbo lift and a few seconds later the turbo lift stops on deck five. Riaan exits and proceeds to the Security Office. Riaan enters and sees six security officers standing by for duty, Ensign Be'Thal, Ensign Tom McCloud, Ensign Kim Stewart, Ensign Elias McLaughlin, Ensign Corrie Mack, and Ensign Shaun McDonald. You six you are with me you are to stand guard on deck eleven, no one is to leave unless authorized to do so. If you are needed the doctor will let you know or myself.

They all replied yes ma'am understood.

Next stop was sickbay to see Ensign Dane. A few seconds later the turbo lift stops at deck eight and Riaan exits the turbo lift. The six security officers head off to deck eleven.

Riaan then enters sickbay and spots Ensign Dane and walks over we are preparing to beam those on the Eagle, not sure of the causalities or the injuries replied Riaan. I am on my way to deck eleven care to join me to assess the injured. They will be kept on deck eleven unless they have severe injuries then transported straight here, those that aren't injured or not to severally will be kept on deck eleven until the Captain decides when it is best to move them and we know there are no Federation Spy's amongst them.

"I will join you, Teilani replied. She turned to ensign Favor. "Favor, sickbay is yours."

==Deck Eleven==

A few seconds later Ensign Dane and Ensign Riaan arrive on deck eleven and exit the turbo lift.

Six security guards were on alert.

The white light ended Ryan was fully materialized. "Everyone account for?" He heard 10 voices of conformation. " Ryan to teams 2, 3 and 4 everyone accounted for?" "Yes sir " all team leaders said" Team 1 will take the bridge. Team 2 will take decks 2 to including sickbay. Team three will take engineering and after that the torpedo bay. Team four will take all remaining and low status locations. All civilians and allied officers that you encounter must be beamed to the Zion when injured. Everyone who is with us can be giving a gun. Protect your medics at all cost. Everyone acknowledge." He got his acknowledgements. "Major Madriani to Riaan prepare to receive the first casualties."

Riaan here, standing by along with Ensign Dane.

Ryan moved his hand forward they had been beamed to deck 3 and to work there way up. His team moved steady but slow. Suddenly 3 federation marines came out of the smoke. "Fire!" 2 commanding voices screamed, Ryan and an officer who would never say another word again. The other marines had found cover and continued to fire. "Ramirez, Wellington you 2 walk around the corridor to see if you can find a way to get behind them." Ryan ordered. "Alice" he said to one of the woman on his squad. "I thought you where the sniper?" "Aye sir." she said with an evil grin. She started putting her special sniper rifle together. "Will you are with me." He gestured forward signaling a direct assault. "See if you can get behind that bulkhead. I'll try to get behind that thing," Ryan pointed toward a cubical object. "The rest cover us. 3, 2, 1 charge." Will and Ryan stormed forward. Phaser hits came very close but Ryan made it, he heard a cry of pain. Will had taken one in the leg. " Riaan beam Chief Will off the Eagle."

Riaan made sure that all eight transporters were on stand-by to beam over any crew and civilians from the Eagle. Adam was in charge of Transporter one, Samantha was in charge of two, James was in charge of three and Chris was in charge four and Erica was in charge of five, Joshua was in charge of six, Louis was in charge of seven, Jonathon was in charge of eight. Each was informed that anyone being beamed over was to be brought straight to Construct Deck for triage, training, evacuation, etc where the civilians were to be treated besides any marines. If need be Riaan could handle the bulk transporter but would be coordinating things from here and assisting in anyway possible. She had basic first aid but could treat the less injured if need be while Teilani handled the most serious.

Riaan to Adam one to beam over lock onto Will's comm badge and beam him straight to deck eleven.

Adam here now beaming over and on stand-by for next transport, out.

Understood, Riaan out

A few seconds later Will materialized on deck eleven.

Teilani run her medical scanner over Chief Will. He had a phaser burn but it was not life threatening. "Teilani shouted, Riaan she's going to be o.k.

Riaan here to Rusty we are ready and on stand-by and Will, will be fine she is being tended to by Teilani. You have nothing to worry she is safe and sound and will be back to duty shortly, Riaan out.

On the Eagle Ramirez and Wellington came storming from behind. The Feds where surrounded. The corporal started shooting on Ramirez and Wellington leaving only the sergeant to fire on Rusty and his team. "Your surrounded, gentlemen, Surrender or die!" "Never" The response came. "As you wish." Ramirez was had found cover behind a piece of wall plating, but the plating stated to dissolve at so much high power phaser shots that Ramirez backed off slowly. The corporal saw it and came forward a bit so that he had a clear mark. He went forward less than 10 centimeter but that was all Alice needed. She fired and the corporeal vaporized. The sergeant was shocked and froze for a second. T'Lar fired the weapon right out of his hands. Ryan jumped up and placed his phaser on the sergeant's chest. "How many on the bridge?" He said demanding as he powered up his phaser. "fi. five, and 3 guards in the briefing room." The sergeant said with fear in his eyes. "Please, please don't kill me." "A shame for you, I was looking forward to it." All the sergeants' dreams went up in smoke, and a second later was all that was left. "You should never deprive yourself of the little pleasures in life." He said. The group grinned.

Tag ( at the same time on the USS Zion?)

They stopped at a floor plan. Ryan studied it. "It seems the only way unto the bridge is through the conference room the rest is blocked." He said. "We can take the Jeffries tube up." He pointed and they moved on. Through Jeffries tubes, they climbed up until they where at the door of the conference room. The door was locked. Ryan ordered them into a circle. There are 3 guards behind that door there are 9 of us. If we just storm in what will our casualty rate be?" He asked the only Vulcan on his team. "Since they have cover, the opportunity to have set booby-traps, and there is no element of surprise, I would say between and 8." "That's to much." Ramirez said. "Indeed. Can't we throw in a grenade?" Alice asked. "Will was our demolitionist, he had the grenades." Ryan said. "Have an idea," Ryan said. "T'lar I need your tricorder." Ryan took his spare rifle and 2 power packs. "We can detonate this with the tricorder," he said, "Only if we can lay it on the tricorder, unless you think the Fed's will let us in and place it on the ground and walk away, Sir." Wellington said with sarcasm. "Mister Wellington there are 2 things you should learn. 1 respect 2 thinking outside the box." he reached into his pocket. "As you may know, I have a 5-year-old daughter, now there is only 1 way she likes her hair, I was told it's a phase, and that is in a ponytail with something like 3 hair ribbons.

After I brought her to the Palin's I found this in the corridor, must have slipped off." He took out a colorful hair ribbon. He placed the hair ribbon around his tricorder and tied his rifle and the power cells on it. "Alice, open the door on my mark. 1,2 mark!." Alice shot the door open and Ryan threw in the grenade. They sought cover beside the doors by pushing themselves against the wall. An enormous blast followed. When Ramirez looked inside he was shot instantly. One of the guards survived. Alice instantly took her mirror construction to look around the door. "Dammed he has a 4.6 Phase guided compression rifle." "Good gun?" "Every snipers dream." Alice got a dreamy look on her face. "Well your 1.0 standard issue sniper rifle will have to do." Alice got out of her dream of course sir. She took her rifle. "I suggest that I storm in and you all give me backfire." "Ok, take positions. 1 2 3 go." Alice stormed in but Ryan was faster and jumped into the room distracting the sniper for a second. Just long enough for Alice to shoot, 2 bullets went right past each other. The Sniper vaporized and Alice took one in her stomach. Madriani to Riaan beam crewman Alice out." He took the 4.6 and placed 1 in the suitcase. "You did a good job Alice, here" He gave her the box. "Engage."

Joshua log onto Alice's comm badge and beam her to deck eleven, Riaan out.

Locking on to her comm. badge and now beaming over, Joshua out.

A few seconds later Alice materialized on deck eleven.

Teilani ran the tricorder over Alice she was going to be fine but would need at least a week off to mend. Alice had lost a lot of blood and there were extensive internal injuries. She was transported to sickbay where she could be tended to properly. Here she couldn't be, it was going to be up to Alice to pull through after having received extensive internal injuries and losing a lot of blood it was amazing that she was still alive as she slipped in and out of consciousness.

"Ok lets go in. 1,2, 3 go." They stormed unto the bridge, phasers on stun. They shot half the crew; the rest went with there arms in the air. "You are all under arrest. This ship is taken by the Maquis." He noticed a commander. "Rank, Name and position!" He said with respect. "Commander Stable, XO USS Bezar." Ryan nodded. "Major Ryan Madriani, Marine CO, USS Zion." They nodded in understanding. " Teams report" All teams reported in, the ship was taken; the only team with heavy casualty's was the team that took engineering. Nine out of ten are dead. Almost all civilians where accounted for. " This is major Ryan Madriani to USS Zion, We have taken the ship and a lot of prisoners. Madriani out."

Riaan here we are on stand-by to transfer the crew of the Eagle over to deck eleven and all hands are ready and waiting to assist. Do you require any assistance or can you handle preparations of transferring those that are alive and injured over? Plus the force fields have been activated to transport any federation prisoners to the brig that aren't injured. There are eight security guards standing guard in the brig if they are needed and I have six security guards on stand-by here if they are needed for any reason for any injured federation crew members that require assessment of their injuries before being sent to the brig./=

Things were progressing fairly well as the civilians were transferred off the Eagle. There were a lot of injured and things were chaotic on deck eleven and some of the civilians seemed confused and lost. The children were wailing and crying petrified as the parents tried to settle the children down it was a state of panic and the tension was so thick you could feel it. It was going to take time to calm the fear and confusion down and to tend to the injured.

Not only were there injured but there were several dead. Riaan began to wonder how many dead weren't transported to the Zion. Riaan thought to herself at least being on the Panther and learning not to let one's emotions interfere with their job was a lesson well taught. Riaan looked at Teilani briefly but she was busy assessing the injured that she was unable to get a good read on Teilani's mental well-being. One of the holodecks was temporarily transferred into a morgue to hold the bodies till after an autopsy was performed and they were able to have a proper burial. Any that arrived dead from the Eagle were transferred right away to the holodeck, as they were transported over. The crew handling the transporters had there hands full and were doing a fantastic job in such a bad situation and they all deserved credit after for a job well done.

To the Rescue "
By: Melissa Jarvis, Chief Security Officer, [RNPC]
Giuseppe Silvio, Chief Engineer, [RNPC]

Stardate: 58204.14 1930

=USS Zion and USS Eagle=

Silvio grabbed his tool kit and took two of his engineers with this to the transporter room. As he entered he found Ensign Jarvis and her team waiting for him. She greeted him with a nod. "We will go over first and make sure the coast is clear. Do you and you men have a side arms Sir?"

"Yes ensign we are armed," replied Silvio.

"Very well, "she said. Jarvis are her security team stepped onto the pad and she nodded at the transporter chief, "Energize."

Silvio watched as that faded away. The wait was a short one. "Jarvis to Zion, you may send over the engineers."

Silvio and his team were transported directly to the Eagle's engineering department. Looking around Silvio saw that there had already been a battle here. There were bodies all over the place. Ensign Jarvis and her team had taken up defensive positions around engineering. There was one engineer from the Eagle frantically trying to get the impulse engines back online. With a huge sigh of relief he approached Silvio. "I am afraid that I am all that is left. They beamed over and started butchering us."

"The warp core is still functional but the damage to the warp nacelles has been so severe we will not be able to use the warp drive, " he continued.

Silvio looked at the console, and indeed there would be no way to get the warp engines to work. He turned his attention to the impulse . They too were badly damaged. It appeared to Silvio that the damage was too complete for emergency repairs. "This is not looking good. I do not think we can repair her under these conditions," said Silvio with frustration in his voice.

Silvio tapped his comm. Badge, "Silvio to Zion, Captain, the damage is too complete over here for ..."

A phaser blast interrupted Silvio, it streaked past him and hit one of his engineers in the chest. The engineer was vaporized instantly. "I guess they mean business." Silvio thought as he dove for cover. Silvio landed beside Ensign Jarvis who had opened fire on a large group of attackers. Silvio drew his own phaser joined the battle as well.

Soon a large force of Zion Marines joined the battle. The Federation attackers were beginning to get desperate. They had now changed tactics. They were attacking the warp core itself. The Zion marines moved quickly to defend the core. After what seemed to Silvio like a lifetime the battle was over. The Federation attackers had fled engineering with the marines in pursuit.

Silvio's engineers had both been killed in the battle. The engineer from the Eagle was injured. "There is nothing we can do here anymore," said Silvio. He was about to order everyone back to the Zion when there was a loud yell from behind them. A severely wounded Federation attacker was running toward the warp core. Ensign Jarvis took aim and fired her phaser rifle hitting the attacker, but not before her managed to throw a device at the warp core.

"Get down!" Jarvis tossed threw herself against Silvio and the Eagle engineer pulling them to the ground. The explosion was deafening. Warning claxons erupted through engineering. "WARNING: Warp core breach in 10 minutes."

Silvio got up and pulled the Eagle engineer to his feet. "You need to eject the warp core. It is going to blow."

"Computer eject the warp core authorization thad-episilon-33-gamma," said the engineer."

Nothing happened.

He tried two more times with the same result

"WARNING Warp core breach in 9 minutes."

Silvio to Zion. The warp core is going to breach you need to get everyone off this ship we have 9 minutes."

Silvio went to a terminal and surveys the systems. If he could just get the core to eject all would be well. The core's familiar throbbing hum was now several times fasters that it should be . He turned to Jarvis, "Get everyone back to the Zion."

"You too Sir, " she said insistently.

"WARNING Warp core breach in 5 minutes."

"I have an idea, we might be able to get rid of this core and save this ship. Go!" he said.

Reluctantly Jarvis and the others beamed back to the Zion. Silvio was now alone.

Silvio tried everything he could think of to bring the ejection systems back online. Nothing worked.

"Warning Warp core breach in 3 minutes"

Silvio was working so furiously that he did not notice that Jarvis had beamed back and was watching him with a great amount of apprehension. "Sir, I think we better go." Startled by her voice Silvio jumped. "I thought I told you to go," said Silvio.

"You are my responsibility Sir. Now let's go," she said.

Silvio sighed, she was right, he was about to call the Zion for a transport when he thought he heard a scream. "Did you hear that?"

"WARNING Warp core breach in 2 minutes."

"Yes we have two minutes Sir let's go," she said.

"No, there is still someone here. He ran towards the sound of the scream. Jarvis, thinking he was insane followed, then she heard it to. They left engineering and heard it again , it was coming from a conference room.

"Warning Warp core breach in one minute."

The door would not open. Silvio tried with all his strength to force the door. It would not budge.

"Warning Warp core breach in 30 seconds."

Jarvis and Silvio together tried to force the door. It finally gave way. Inside the room here two small children. A boy and a girl. Bother were terrified and huddling under a table.

"WARNING, warp core breach in 15 seconds."

Jarvis and Silvio raced toward the kids.

"WARNING Warp core breach in 10 seconds"

Grabbing the two small children Jarvis tapped her comm. badge, "Zion 4 to beam out."

== Sickbay==

Teilani rushed back to Sickbay, she needed to give them last instructions before the ship went on red alert. As she entered sickbay all medical staff were already assembled. "Ok" sorry I am late, Teilani took her checklist. "main Sickbay?" she asked Ensign Favor.

"Ready to receive casualty's. After 10 we move toward the converted Holodeck 8." Favor said. "Ok" Teilani said. "Bridge medic?" "Fully equipped." Nurse Ally said. “Don’t forget to take an extra med-kit with you, Teilani said. Ally nodded. Yes Ma’am.

"Surgical bay's?" Teilani continued. "All 3 are ready." Favor said. "thank you Ensign. How about the Morgue?" "Empty all cool-cells are working." Nurse Tekla said. "Lets hope we don't need them" Teilani said as she signed the ready status.

She looked at her staff. “Listen up all, one last thing, this “lets call it exercise” means that we might need to pull double shifts. We all signed up for this cause we wanted to do something no one had ever done before not because we thought it be easy or safe but we are not here to take foolish risks, the captain and the rest of the crew are depending on us to keep the crew of the Zion in tip top shape. If we can not cope with the flow of injured personnel we might fall back on some of the marines but not before.

"Ok everyone get clean clothes, take a shower, have some fun, relax until the red alert." Dismissed she said and they all split up.

Teilani walked to one of the biobeds and let herself fall on it. Favor walked up to her, “are you alright she asked. Teilani did not answer right away, she remembered the last battle she had been in and she shivered. “I will be when this over, Teilani responded. “You have been running around all day, Favor continued, get some rest. "That's what I'm trying." Teilani said agitated.

"Well I am afraid I need to disturb your rest an other 5 minutes. You got sign of these stats." she handed her a PADD. Teilani looked trough it. A doctors work was never done she signed the padd and pushed her thumb on it. "Anything else?" she asked. "No you rest for a while. Favor replied. "Thanks. Computer play some whale songs."

Teilani closed her eyes and lay down on the biobed, trying to relax and getting her self prepared for what was about to come.

Ian Hunter, Commanding Officer, [PC]

==Bridge==

Hunter gripped the arm of his chair. "Status Westfall?"

"Sir, there isn't too much I can tell you, the USS Eagle was just about done in by the attack from the USS Bezar before it was destroyed. Life support is minimal but sustainable, their warp core will breach in 8 minutes and counting, few life signs remain, we're evacuating via all transporters, including cargo". Said Westfall.

Hunter rubbed his fingers across his lips. His eyes were riveted to the tactical display on the main view.

"Sir...telemetry from the tactical sensor array indicates the USS Horatio has broken off their attack, they're on an intercept course with us, ETA is five minutes to Weapons Lock before we can engage".

"Come'on Silvio..." said Hunter under his breath.

"...All our personnel are aboard except Jarvis and Silvio. Their warp core has 75 seconds before anti-matter containment is lost".

"One Minute remaining before the Eagle's warp core loses containment *Mark*".

"Westfall," said Hunter, his voice filled with grave concern, "five seconds before the core goes critical, bring shields to full."

"Standing by to raise shields, Captain. The Horatio is two minutes out".

Hunter tapped his com badge, "transporter chief, can you get a fix on them yet?"

"Negative sir, there is too much interference now."

The ship's computer counted down from Westfall's mark. 30 Seconds...25 seconds, 20 sections...15 seconds.

"transporter chief?!" asked Hunter, "I have them Sir." came the reply.

"Shields at Maximum" said Westfall, All hands brace for impact. Damage Control teams stand by!

The ship rocked violently and listed as the Eagle exploded.

"Captain, the shields were overloaded because of the anti-matter breach of the warp core, they're off-line, the Horatio is in range in 15 seconds, I have manual targeting on their warp core, we can fire when ready at your mark".

Hunter stood up and turned to Westfall, "Is the cloak operational?"

"The cloak is operational, Sir, and we can fire through it".

Hunter nodded, "Activate it."

The Zion faded from view in the midst of the expanding debris field left over from the Eagle.

The Horatio Approached the last coordinates of the Zion and scanned the area. The Zion waited in silence. After 5 minutes of not finding the Zion it turned to re-engage the Atlanta.

"Sir the USS Horatio has lost our position, they're moving to re-engage the USS Atlanta. Our shields are on-line at 100%, weapons targeting systems are back online, no damage sustained, it was the energy surge, and debris that threw targeting off.

"Helm, follow the Horatio, target propulsion and weapons. All torpedoes and all forward phaser banks. Maximum yield."

Hunter waited until the best tactical moment and gave the order, "Fire"

The Zion's cloaked hull lit up like a mirage at sun set as it unleashed a volley of torpedoes and phaser beams.

"Captain, the USS Horatio's impulse engines are off-line, maneuvering thrusters are disabled".

"Good shooting Westfall" said Hunter with a grin.

"Four Mark V Photon Torpedos targeted to our forward shields, I'm varying the modulation at maximum to compensate."

The torpedoes streaked toward the Zion, it attempted to maneuver but two of the torpedoes hit the forward shield violently, rocking the Zion. Sparks erupted from several statations and some overhead consoles.

Two torpedos have hit the forward shield grid, no, system structural damage, cycle time, one minute.

"Return fire" said Hunter.

Four fired, two wide. They are attempting to go to warp, Sir.

A moment later, leaving a trail of plasma, the Horatio flashed into a blur as it managed to jump to warp 1.

"Let them go." said Hunter, "helm, lay in a course back to the Atlanta's location. Full impulse."

"Aye-aye" said the Conn officer, "ETA is 5 minutes."

Hunter sat back in his chair and waited for the next round.

==Sick Bay==

Dr. Pendleton sat on the floor, his knees folded like a paper greeting card. He was the last patient on Favor's log. She'd been working for thirty-six hours straight, tidying up the mess that her life had become since the tidal wave of injury washed through the Sick Bay hatch nearly two days before.

When they'd all first tottered in--sixteen injured refugees who'd fled the Federation and run right into an ambush...all leaning on one another, holding one another up, this one missing an eye, that one with a vast expanse of pink and yellow marbled flesh peeking out from behind the hands holding the guts inside, and poor Dr. Pendleton borne on a stretcher by a pair of good looking Marines--she'd placed them one by one in suspended animation tanks.

The tanks didn't last forever; their recommended maximum term of usage was only 48 hours, but it was good place to stash patients when she was overwhelmed and understaffed. And days like this, they came in waves.

"It doesn't have to be done right, it just has to be done," Favor had said as she placed each patient, one by one, in the holding tanks. That was a maxim from her med school days. She couldn't tend to each screaming need all at once, for God's sake!

And since she couldn't handle all the patients by herself, it was best to throw them all into temporary storage where they'd float in dreamy isolation, without dying, without wailing and bleeding and throwing fits all over the place. "I can only handle you one at a time," she had said, and then unlocked them one at a time, out of the saline womb-like tanks, to tend their wounds, each in turn. One task at a time, she kept reminding herself. You can't save the world in a day, Favor.

Dr. Pendleton moaned, arguing with people who weren't even there. "I'm not the cause of the missing report, Chalmers! I haven't seen it, I wasn't aware that I'd been assigned babysitting duties for your bloody mathematical logistics paper! Go up to Level Four and ask that blasted secretary! Ask Bev Peabody where it is!" he shouted, and Ensign Favor, though she knew it was wicked to laugh at someone's fevered imagination, laughed anyway.

She stood over him, scanning. "Massive compound fractures," she murmured. "Subdural hematoma." Tinkle, tinkle, the little jewels draped on her head sang. Tinkle, tinkle.

She was dazzling, Pendleton thought. There was no other word that fit. Simply no other word. Her hair dazzled him, she postively entranced him, and he wondered if she realized that she was walking around in this surreal, bloodsplashed white room, dolled up like someone's idea of a Christmas tree.

Had she just come from a party? What were those jewels in her hair? he wondered. What color were they? Transfixed, he studied her head, wondered if he was dreaming again. He licked his lips and tasted salt. Was that purple? No, the jewels changed, and now they were pale melon green, and now amber--no, wait, they'd changed again. Now they were a distinct shade of raspberry. He blinked and shook his head.

"Excuse me. What are those...pretties?" he asked, and shook his head again.

Favor eyed him. Middle-aged, fortyish, she guessed. He'd come aboard with no ID, another lost refugee. She'd do a retina scan later to find out what the computer had to say about this befuddled professor of theoretical mathematics, for that's what he'd told her he was. "They're my Singing Jewels," she answered, working quickly. "Do you like them?"

"Yes, I like them very much," Dr. Pendleton whispered.

"So that girly stuff they shoved down my throat was really good for something after all," Favor replied.

Dr. Pendleton had suffered massive injuries. It was a miracle he wasn't dead from shock, a miracle, in fact, that he could even speak to her, and she smiled grimly as she remembered the Ceremony of The Singing Jewels, when she was sixteen and a girl on Risa, and how they'd given her these as her birthright, that of every Risan female. To attract a mate, or mates, Favor thought, and smiled as she thought again of her mother.

The jewels had a hypnotic, charming effect on certain males, and that was their intended purpose. To hypnotize, seduce, draw in. Well, they'd certainly worked their charm on this man. They'd made him forget the jagged bone sticking out of his left thigh, and there was something to be said for that.

"One more inch and you'd have bled to death all over my floor," Favor said. "And then I'd have had another mess to clean up." She thought of a tasteless joke she'd once heard about a political leader shot dead as he drove down a Texas street--Why did his wife climb over the back of the limousine when she heard the shots fired? Well, because she knew that was another mess she'd have to clean up, of course!

Gallows humor, the last refuge of the medical professional on the brink!

"Here we go, buddy," she murmured, and jabbed a tube of morphine compound under his skin. "Off to La La Land." The gray-haired man's eyes rolled back. His head lolled, and he drooled, long sticky strands of saliva hanging down his lapel.

"Oh, men! You're all so attractive when you're sleeping," she said, and straining, lifted the man onto his Kriko-shield table.

Ensign Favor locked down the lid of his Kriko-shield. "Computer. Begin chemical coma infusion," she ordered. Dr. Pendleton lay still, and the artificial respirator clicked and whirred, the catheter inserting itself, all these little tasks that the human body miraculously did for itself most of the time, the computer now had to do for it.

Favor braced herself. "Computer: Re-align bones," she said, and the table shunts moved, and she watched as the femur protruding from Dr. Pendleton's thigh retracted with a thick, sucking noise. And then she heard the faint crackle as, deep in his muscle, the computer aligned the bone precisely.

Favor closed her eyes. Could she hear it? Sometimes, she swore that she could hear, actually hear two ends of a fractured bone reaching towards each other. Come back to me, come back to me, let us be whole again! Let us be one!

Get a grip, Favor! she thought. You're cracking up!

She sprayed a mist of antibiotic solution inside the wound. "Computer: Glue suture," she ordered. God, it was a wonder this poor man hadn't died from the shock, and she gritted her teeth. The crunch and snap of human tissue and bones... gad. Would she ever get used to it?

She picked up the borrowed tri-corder, a sterile thing completely lacking any personality whatsoever. Lord, how she missed her own! She glided across the chamber to a shelf, reached up, and brought her poor little broken medical instrument down to examine.

She unwrapped the cloth that she'd placed it in, and gave it the once-over. She'd found it the day before, in the middle of her quarters floor, broken in three pieces. It had been safely up on a shelf until the ship took a sharp hit, and then it flew across the room, bounced off her bed, and smashed.

If only they hadn't been out of bubble wrap, she thought mournfully. If only she hadn't spent her final, bored minutes before the sudden migration of injured refugees into Sick Bay, popping all the unpopped bubble wrap!

But she had, and so they were out of it, and it was too late for her tricorder, and she rewrapped it in its square of black crepe, and placed it carefully back on the shelf.

For want of a nail, a kingdom was lost! she thought, and although she could not see it, for she stared not in a mirror but at the colossal mess of soiled sheets and towels and gauze--no, not in a mirror but at the stacks of shiny instruments rubied with the blood of sixteen different people---although she could not see it herself---all jewels in her hair turned momentarily black.

==Refugee Science Freighter==

Sarik materialized on the ship. He saw Zent already scanning the area.

Zent nodded at Sarik, "I've determined the source is coming from this direction." they walked down a corridore, Zent shifting his tricorder from side to side then stopping. "In here" he said looking at Sarik.

"We should proceed then." There was little power in the freighter, light sources were low. Sarik went to the doors, but they didn't open. The tap button didn't work either "It will not open, we should force it open."

They manually opened the hatch to what appeared to be a large cargo bay filled with scientific apparatus. There was a large machine humming in the center.

Zent approached the machine, walking its length, studying the device. It was roughly cylindrical, waves of light pulsed down a central shaft running its length from a large sphere shaped structure.

"Fascinating." Sarik looked at his tricorder. "High concentrations of chroniton particles, emanating from this device."

"It appears to be powered by a quantum singularity." Zent concluded.

"Indeed we should be cautious lieutenant"

"It almost doesn't look like federation design does it?" asked Zent.

"My estimations are the same, this device has been constructed in the first place with federation material, as you will notice in the basic design. However the construction seems to be largely build of other components which we should identify." Sarik put his tricorder on the floor while reaching his to his science kit.

Zent stood near the spherical part, it was almost 3 meters in height. He had surmised as well, that it was a structural containment system for a quantuum singularity. This type of power source was unusual for Federation. It almost hinted at Romulan based technology. Zent's thoughts lingered on the word, "Romulan."

As Sarik continued scanning Zent stepped to what appeared to be the device's control panel. It was a multilayered LCARS panel. It showed the system was activated. His fingers traced the menu schematics. As Sarik drew near for a closer look himself, Zent said, "this panel controls a molecular phase inverter..." He looked up. "That means this is a...." he paused, letting Sarik complete his observation.

"Interphase generator. Romulan technology." Sarik looked at Zent. "The Romulans experimented with this device in 2364. The device failed to work. The high concentration of energy made it explode. However this seems fairly stable."

Zent's fingers continued to dance across the panel, ..."this section mixes the phase inverter stream with chroniton particles. "That doesn't make sense, those particles causes instability with interphasic matter."

Sarik looked at the inverter stream. "The chroniton particles are subjected to high energy pulses, perhaps to ionize them." Sarik raised an eyebrow.

"And then..." continued Zent, "they are injected into." He looked up at the end of the device with a very puzzled look on his face and repeated himself as he walked toward the far side of it. With his tricorder going he stopped at the end of it, took several more steps. He looked back at Sarik. "This is odd" he said. Zent held his hands forward as if he were lost in the dark and stepped forward. Suddenly his hands vanished. He pulled his hand back suddenly, they rematerialzed after several moments. Zent wiggled his fingers. "What the....?"

"Fascinating." Sarik looked at the odd expression on Zents face. He scanned his hand with the tricorder. "Lieutenant, your hand has ceased to age approximately .02 seconds in compare to the rest of your body.

Zent pick up his tricorder, still testing his fingers. It was a rather diconcerting affect. "A temporial device combined with an interphase generator?"

"I believe that the theory behind this technology is not only to alter the molecular substance but also the temporal substance, making it in effect timeless." He looked at the device. "However I suspect that there is much more to this device. We should be very careful with it as we don't know yet what we are exactly dealing with."

"How do you suggest we proceed?" asked Zent.

Before Sarik could answer, they were interupted

"Well, well." A raspy voice behind them spoke cynical. "Two maquis traitors trying to grasp what is beyond of their comprehension." A rather young man looked at the two officers. He was wearing a greasy long white coat and held a old type federation phaser in his hands.

Sarik looked at Zent. "An unpleasant surprise I believe."

"Very Astute." Said Zent with a glint of sarcasim.

"And to whom do we have the pleasure?" Sarik asked

"I am the inventor of this idea, isn't it great?"

He looked at Zent. "I am protecting my device at all costs.

Sarik, "Then tell me... inventor... how do you explain the loss of chroniton particles and the 0.06 residual energy build up in the phase invertor. I suggest you check your invention." He raised an eyebrow at Zent who looked strangely at the Vulcan.

"I...I..." He was speechless. In a moment of amazement he was caught off guard. Before Zent and Sarik could try something he restored himself. "The device is not perfect yet and that's why I don't want anyone to know! Especially those damn vulcans with their ...ears."

Sarik rose an eyebrow. "Ears? In all these years, I have never been referred to my ears as an incentive to place unpleasant remarks." He looked at Zent.

Zent looked at Sarik and tried to keep a straight face.

"However, pointing at my ears to insult me, won't place me in a state of agression. However there is a chance that some vulcans might be offended, most unlikely, but hypothetically possible."

"Really?" asked Zent looking at the vulcan, Isn't being offended an emotional response to a negative stimuli?"

"Insulting is indeed an emotional response, however some vulcans, unlike myself, will be provoked by a negative stimuli. As I said it is highly unlikely. But if we are threatened by words and feel that the aggressor is also able to put those words into deeds I might react accordingly."

Zent nodded, "So in situation where that man over there says he hates your ears, that would at least for some vulcans cause..."

"STOP IT!" he man shouted, he was getting confused by them.

"I am sure you have nothing to fear from us." Sarik looked at him. "Perhaps you can take us to your chief, he will be most eager to hear from Dr Sarik and Dr Zent. You see that we are just like you, merely scientists trying to discover more about this universe."

"We're not armed," said Zent, neglecting the small type I phaser in his belt. "We picked up the scans," said Zent looking at Sarik and knowing how good he was at poker, continued to try and unnerve the man, "...the device is going to go critical in 16 minutes....Its imperative we see your...chief." Said Zent following Sarik's lead.

"I... cannot bring you to him. He is... not available." He stammered.

Zent wriggled his fingers and looked back at the far end of the device. It partly made sense. "Because he is in interphasic space, isn't he?" asked Zent sternly.

"No he is in his office." The young man looked nervous.

"Well perhaps you can tell him that we are eager to see him."

"I ... dont think he wants to be disturbed."

Sarik nodded at Zent. "We will just send him a message."

"You cant! He cannot receive anything."

"We know how to send a message through this device. He will understand."

"I cannot let you to."

"So he is indeed in this interphasic state? I must say you are forthcoming with information. Tell me young man was it your intention to have your chief killed in an accident so that you could claim this device as your own?" said Sarik.

"Besides, said Zent, "we'll all be dead if this thing blows up, think of all the woman and children, it will all be on your shoulders."

The man turned red as both officers spoke that out. "You are accusing me of something i have never done!"

"Then you wont mind we save your career and life by brining your chief back to us." Said Sarik

"You have to hurry, there isn't much time left." added Zent.

The man looked as if he saw a ghost. "I...I..." he stammered

"I mean, just look at this display," said Zent walking over to the device with his finger pointing. The man turned his back on Sarik while keeping the phaser pointed at Zent as he walked to the control end of the device.

"See? there is a build up of ionized particles in the injector manifold causing molecular degradation, this thing is going to blow!"

"No! you are lying!" the man screamed at Zent, now holding the phaser up at shoulder level, pointing with his other hand, "You are trying trick me. When Dr. Sparrow comes back he's going to..." he didnt seem to get out of his words as Sarik quietly approached him from behind and performed a vulcan nerve pinch.

The man slid to the floor momentarily paralized.

Zent looked up at Sarik, "Doctor Sparrow, I know of him..." he murmered as he turned to the device. "The device is stable, but it is putting an enormous drain on the ship. Its possible that if the energy input levels get to low, the device could go critical."

He said looking at Sarik.

"I'm betting Dr Sparrow is in there," said Zent pointing. "I'm going to go find him." He looked at Sarik for approval.

Sarik raised his eyebrows but said nothing.

Zent turned and walked into the device and vanished.

==Shuttle Euphrates==

Sam laid with her head upon the pilot console, vast a sleep. She had been awake for so many hours, piloting the ship through the badlands, tending to Charles. Her arm was infected and she had a fever.

My arm,. It is falling off, I have no shoulders to hold them on. My elbows are growing. How can I still be alive this way. I can’t hear myself breath. I can’t swallow. Listen…. Nothing. Nothing Where is everything? Everyone. Death isn’t suppose to feel unnatural like this. But I ‘m not dead. I’m not dead. Where am I. Don’t leave me in space! It’s so cold here…..

At the same time a alarm went off, causing Sam to wake abruptly. She blinked with her eyes, taking a moment to realise were she was. The alarm which has so abruptly woken her was an indication about a debris field in the area. Small pieces hit the Euphrates outer hull.

“Computer, Sam said, specify the debris”

“Debris consists of duranium, titanium alloys, used for the building of freighters and small cargo vessels.

Hm Sam said to herself. There must have been a fight here otherwise there would never have been any remains.

Computer: “Use long range scan to determine if there are any ships in the vicinity”

“Acknowledged”. There are 6 ships in the area”.

“Can you identify them, Sam asked.

“Ships are the USS Atlanta, USS Zion and some freighters” the computer replied.

Finally, Sam said, it’s about time.

“Computer try to open a hailing frequency to the Zion”, Sam ordered as she walked to the back of the shuttle, where Charles still laid unconscious.

“Charles, just a few more minutes than we are home, you hear me”? Sam said.

She walked back to the pilot’s chair, desperately waiting for the Zion to respond. “Computer keep repeating the hailing frequency”.

Sam leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes, waiting for a response.

==Refugee Science Freighter==

After stepping through the device, Zent turned around and saw Sarik. He had a surprised look on his face. The lights appeared to be much more blueish than a moment ago. He also observed that Sarik was moving his tricorder very slowly. Zent realized that time was moving at a much slower rate. "Fascinating" said Zent looking up, now realizing the light was discolored from temporial time shift.

Even though he already knew the answer Zent asked anyway, "Sarik? can you hear me?" Suddenly Zent heard talking, he froze in place as several cardassians brought a man dressed in a lab coat into the cargo bay and dropped him on the floor. His hands and feet were bound. One of them walked over and looked at Sarik and Zent. "Where these two here before?" asked one of them. Another Cardassian came over and looked at Sarik, he swung his arm and it passed through Sarik as if he were a hologram. Another one waved and pointed to the assistant who was on the floor." Look they have overpowered the assistant."

Zent watched being still as Sarik. "If they shut down the machine we will be trapped in here." said one of them, "our take-over will fail." One of the Cardassians yelled an obscenity and said, "quickly, we must get everyone together and takeover now. "You go forwad," he commanded one of them. "You go aft and I'll get the troops in the other cargo bay. The three men walked through the walls and dissappeared.

Zent quickly grabbed Doctor Sparrow and dragged him back through the device's portal.

He slowly began to materialize but he was already in front of the device, quickly he shut it down. The loud humming slowed to a low groan and faded. The pulsating lights stopped flickering.

He turned to Sarik who was still standing as he was when he left. Zent stammered, "th-there are ca-cardassians in there he said pointing toward the device's portal.

Sarik rose another eyebrow, it were just a couple of seconds since Zent left, and he had not seen any cardassians. Then Sarik looked at a new person which came with Zent along.

"I did not see any cardassians." Sarik bend over to reach for the phaser of the assistant.

Zent quickly explained his experience and how there were Cardassians waiting to takeover in interphased space. "They're trapped now." he said concluding.

"Interesting experience." He looked at the scientist who was still not conscious."Let me take a look at him." Sarik scanned the man, he had some braindamage and several broken bones here and there.

Sarik to Atlanta, four people to beam up, two injured people directly to sickbay. Both the scientist and his assistent were beamed to sickbay of the Atlanta.

Once aboard the Atlanta, Zent went to work. He was able to conclude that the interphased matter could not be targeted by conventional transporters. He had hoped the transporters could be rigged to do so.

Instead with Sarik's assistance they devised another plan. First, all the passengers on the ship would need to be evacuated. Then, several devices which emitted anyon particles would be beamed aboard the freighter and activated remotely. This would dephase the chroniton particles and revert the Cardassians to normal space. Then, the Cardassians could be beamed off, directly into a holding area.

Sarik and Zent beamed aboard the Zion. It was much better suited for mass transport functions. They explained the matter to Captain Hunter.

The on duty tactical officer coordinated the evacuation of the passengers of the freighter while Zent and Sarik perfected the remote controlled anyon emitters.

When everything was in place Sarik and Zent went down to the trasporter room where they beamed the emitters over to the ship. Zent motioned to Sarik to activate the emitters.

Sarik continuously scanned the freighter. No life signs appeared as expected.

"There are no signs of life. Hypothetically there would be some signs of cardassians but there are none.

Zent remembered the slow time effect. "I suspect several months elapsed in interphasic space since I shut down the generator because of the added temporal distortion field. The Cardassians didn't realize this and didn't bring enough supplies to sustain themselves." surmised Zent.

"Sarik rose an eyebrow and tapped on a console. "Mr Zent ancient earth history, have you have some knowledge of it?"

Zent rested his arms on the console and smirked, "I haven't been around as long as you, but I've heard a story or two."

"There was a story of an old earth army that couldnt capture a city after years of siege when suddenly a clever hero names Odyseus came with an idea. They used a huge horse as a gift to the Trojans. The Trojans accepted the gift believing it came from the gods. Then the soldiers came out at night and murdered people in the city. I believe the cardassians were trying to use the device for a similar purpose. They intimidated the assistant and mr Sparrow to help them and took Sparrow with them. However they forgot that time passed by more quickly and since time passes by in a multiple versitude of times 15 being in there for a couple of days may indeed become months. However a starving man will always try to look for an escape, somehow they couldn't find the exit and now they were drifting onboard the ship in a different time."

Zent's face frowned, "Yet another sublayer of interphasic space?"

Zent began running his own scans. "Sarik," said Zent with a pause, "I'd have to concur. Even if they had starved to death their bodies would have materialized... something would have materialized, uniforms, weapons, what ever they took into interphasic space should have percipitated out after exposure to the anyon beam."

Zent paused to consider the ramifications of this theory.

"Oh crap!" he said. "They could be anywhere," he murmmered, He turned to Sarik and mused, "The 'Trojan Horse' has just become the legendary haunted ship, 'The Flying Dutchman'."

==Sick Bay==

After trying to comfort the children and the parents Riaan needed to assign those from the Eagle to guest quarters. She felt completely helpless seeing the terror in the eyes of the children and the parents looking so lost and disheveled it had been a long day.

Riaan was tired and weary but knew that she needed to get everyone settled and it was going to take a few hours. She had several good Operation Officers who were also feeling the stress. As Riaan assigned the civilians there quarter's the other Operation Officers escorted the civilians to the new temporary quarters until they reached Qul Tuq. Riaan also ordered the other Operation's Officers to show the civilians to the mess hall.

Riaan couldn't wait for the day to be done she was hungry and tired but her priorities were the civilians from the Eagle.

Riaan did everything she could to assist in sickbay and kept a very close eye on the two civilians that were hiding within the group. She assigned Be'Thal, James, Michael and Shane to watch over the two and ordered to stun them if they tried anything whatsoever, even though a force field was erected around their bio beds.

Three and a half hours later all the civilians were assigned to their quarters where they could settle down and relax. There were some children that lost their parents on the Eagle and some of the parents took those children under their care until another guardian could be contacted and arrangements could be made to have those children reunited with family or other arrangements could be made if no success was made.

Riaan made one final report to see to Patia Zoei.

Riaan: "Computer, begin report."

After seeing the survivors from the Eagle I would like to have a support group set up to help them through this tragic day. The children I feel have been most affected especially those that lost their parents today. Those that have lost their parents have been taken care of by other civilians from the Eagle. If at possible I suggest that we find a way to contact any family member that can take care of these children that lost their parents or some other arrangements can be made. I feel with your expertise in such a crisis as this you would be the best person to handle this situation at hand.

I am also concerned about Ensign Dane she has taken a major shock seeing two that were part of the boarding party on the Kitty Hawk and highly suggest some counseling to help her through this.

Riaan: "Computer end report and save as Civilians from the Eagle."

Computer: "Report saved."

Riaan: Computer send report to Ensign Zoei and Captain Hunter."

Computer: "Report sent to Ensign Zoei, and Captain Hunter."

There wasn't much else Riaan could think of and decided to get some sleep even though it may not be much.

Riaan headed off to her quarters knowing she could be called if needed but she needed a bit of sleep first if at all possible.

All the logs had been uploaded to the Atlanta to check the integrity or anything fishy. Bradley had been working with Ensign Rose in case anything needed to be transcribed.

After returning to communications Misty began to decode the message that was sent from the Linx. Several minutes later Misty finds the one that the Linx had sent to the Federation.

Misty: "Computer, decrypt message."

Misty continued listening and watching the long-range scanners and checking if there were any more ships within the vicinity.

Suddenly the computer beeped and Misty looked at the message that was sent.

"This is Captain Bezeban we have boarded the Linx we have control of the freighter and are under attack by two vessels, need help urgently can't allow anyone to escape."

"This is Dominic from the Federation reinforcements are on the way must hold your ground till we can reach you."

Misty turns and looks at the Captain, excuse me Captain I just deciphered the message that was sent from the Linx reinforcements are on the way from the Federation.

"Well then we need to hurry home, don't we?"

Yes ma'am, replied Misty to the Captain. Also Captain Bradley our Computer Specialist found large gaps of data missing and has no luck retrieving what was erased, I had asked that he please keep me informed if and when he is able to retrieve what has been erased.

Keep me posted replied the Captain.

Yes ma'am replied Misty.

"Establish contact with the Zion."

This is Ensign Willow to the USS Zion.

Ensign Westfall here from the Zion here

Ensign Willow here there is a message for Captain Hunter.

Please hold for a second.

Understood, as Misty waited.

Captain Hunter, this is Westfall, Sir, we have an incoming encrypted ship-to-ship transmission from Ensign Willow, of the USS Atlanta regarding some intel they found, I'll transfer the transmission to your console".

"Ok Westfall, put it through to my ready room," said Hunter

Ensign Westfall go ahead to relay message to Captain Hunter.

Understood putting through.

Communications are open Captain, Misty replied.

Captain Hunter appeared on the view screen from his ready room.

"Captain Hunter, our Communications Officer has some interesting news."

Hunter leaned his elbow on his desk as the information was conveyed to him

"Very well, Captain," said Hunter. "As the freighters are not able to go over warp 5 yet, continue to lead them on. Since we're bringing up the rear we'll turn around and do some recon." Hunter held up his hand, "Let's not worry too much about it. Maybe "Lets hope so. In any other case, we will arrive at the station in about 15 hours. I think we will hold that out, and the closer we get to Qul Tuq the farther away they are from home. Lets just hope we gave them a good message. "Acknowledged, Captain, Zion out." "Good hunting, Ian" Captain Hunter smiled as his image faded to black.

=Bridge USS Zion=

The USS Atlanta's Captain Haily appeared on the view screen, Hunter and her exchanged pleasentries and debriefed each other on each their status.

He leaned forward, in his command chair, Helm, lay in a course back to Qul Tuq, we'll bring up the rear. "Aye" came the command.

He got up out of his chair and went up to talk to Westfall. He patted him on the shoulder and complimented his targeting. He also ordered Westfall to locate and recall Sam and Charles. They would be needed to process the refugees. There was already a report of at least two possible infiltrations. He also expressed his concern that there could be enemy ships stalking the convoy and to be alert. As for everyone else, Hunter downgraded the ship to Yellow Alert.

Hunter walked across the brige and entered his ready room. Leaning back he closed his eyes. Not bad for a day's work. They had managed to save 4 of the 5 freighters of refugees, and resecued the crew of the Eagle. The Zion also chalked up its first kill, for an excelsor class ship and with assistance, destroyed a Galor class Cardasian. They also severely damaged the USS Horatio. Hunter seriously doubted it would ever be able to go back in service because it was damaged so serverly.

He wasn't sure what Sarik would find on the cargo ship but he was confident in his abilities to correct situations.

He took a deep breath and went back out and sat in the command chair. He watched the freighters lined up in front of the Zion, blazing through the starfield.

Hunter picked up his PADD and started to read the damage reports coming in. He was particularly anxious to read Doctor's report as well as the Major's report.

Ensign Favor stood in her quarter’s head, rinsing the greasy crust off her face. Gad, what a crazy day it had been! Her eyes burned from lack of sleep. "Computer: Hot bubble bath," she ordered, and heard the soft rush of water, and smelled lavender and honeysuckle. "Dim the lights."

She removed her hair jewels and threw them in a drawer, then stripped and sank into the water. "Computer: Blueberry Moon," she said. The soft refrains of her favorite Risan roadhouse band filled the chamber.

Favor hummed along with the tune, and ducked her head beneath the bubbles. Thank God this insane day was over at last! Honestly, when Dr. Dane showed up to take her shift, Favor could have kissed her!

She held her breath as long as she could, and popped up, water streaming down her face, and that's when she heard the soft, hesitant tapping on the door.

"Uh. Ma'am? Ma'am, I'm not peeking, I just want you to know that first off. I've got my back to you."

Favor froze. She could barely make out a faint outline in the doorway, of a man shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other.

"Mister," she barked, "there had better be a damn good reason why you entered my private chambers without express invitation." Snatching her towel, she wrapped it around herself and stood up. The insolence of these young crewman!

"Ma'am," the lackey stuttered, "I'm sorry Ma'am, but there's been an emergency in Sick Bay."

Emergency? Where the hell was Dane? "Crewman, I don't know who you think you're dealing with here, but if you want to keep that rank on your sleeve, you better get your happy tail the hell out of my bathroom. And have your direct superior contact me to discuss your conduct, while you're at it. Dr. Dane's on duty right now, I'm not!!!!"

"Ma'am," the crewman tried again, "that's why I'm here. They sent me to get you because you didn't answer when they sent a message by communicator. Dr. Dane is the emergency, Ma'am. Apparently she passed out cold on the Sick Bay floor."

Oh, for the love of Pete! "No rest for the wicked, eh," Favor snapped, stepping out of her bath.

"Uh, I'm not sure what you mean, Ma'am?" The crewman sounded as though he were about to cry, and Favor softened. He was just an enlistee, a kid, really. Probably had never seen a woman in the bathtub before except on the holodeck, Favor thought, and snickered.

"OK, Crewman," she said, mustering her dignity. "You're dismissed. I'll forgive the intrusion, if you can get the hell out of my quarters in under ten seconds."

The crewman fled.

Back in sickbay Teilani tried to hold herself together, her memories came flushing in so fast that it made her sick to her stomach. She had to hold on because of her patients and her crew, she could not show any sign of weakness before them.

“Ally," Teilani said to the head nurse, "I will be in my office for a while”. Ally nodded.

Teilani walked to her office, back straight, fighting to keep the tears away. She sat down in one of the corners of her office, folding her arms around her knees, placing her head on top of them and rocking herself back and forth. Slowly the tears dripped from her eyes.

As Teilani was hiding in a corner she did not see Favor coming in.

Ensign Favor, directed by the head nurse, stepped into Dr. Dane's darkened office. Once again, she was struck by the disorder of the place. No personal effects, and a thick layer of dust clung to the shelves. It was as if Dr. Dane had shut down the ventilation system or something.

"Doctor," she called, "are you in here?" She heard the faint sound of weeping coming from the corner, and heaved a sigh. "Computer: Lights on," she ordered.

Dr. Dane sat, knees to chest, hiding her face. She peeped over her shoulder, and Favor saw that her hair was completely dishevelled, and her face swollen and red.

Lord, Ensign Favor thought, with a flash of irritation. I could be back in a hot bath right now.

"Dr. Dane," she began, edgy and somewhat mean. "Get a grip on yourself! What on earth is going on in here?"

Teilani tried to wipe the tears from her face and tried to fix her hair as she heard Favor talking to her.

“It’s nothing Ensign, it has all been a bit too much today. There are so many injured civilians and …….. I’m sorry that they disturbed you, I told them not to do so".

Favor tapped her toe. "Well, apparently they didn't listen. I just had some crewman that didn't look old enough to shave, visit me in my boudoir and tell me it was a big emergency down here. So, I'm here now. What's going on??"

Teilani got up and walked to her chair, she was shaking all over her body. She looked at Favor, not realising how vulnerable and sad she looked.

“I suppose you have not heard then," Teilani started. "Remember the last group of civilians we beamed on board?”

Favor nodded. "How could I forget? I had a dozen of them in suspended animation."

“There were two men with them." Teilani paused remembering the encounter. "I recognised them, Favor, I recognised them from the Kittyhawk. They were part of a boarding party during the attack. I witnessed them murdering a whole family”.

Favor thought Dane was crazier than a bedbug. First with the bad dreams, now she's seeing imaginary war criminals! Favor threw up her hands in disgust.

“I know what you think Ensign, but I’m not crazy, nor have I lost my mind, I am 100 percent sure, and I am willing to testify to that. It’s just," Teilani sighed, "I’m scared Ensign, scared or what might happen next, and I do not like it, being scared I mean”.

Teilani clutched her hands together and sighed deeply, trying to get the shaking under control. She had to get a grip of herself if only for her crew.

Favor heaved an inward sigh. "OK, the men are now in lockup, correct? There's nothing more you can do about this right now, Dr. Dane. If you want me to take over your shift, I suppose that could do that, at least until they're stable enough to be moved down to the Brig. That way, you won't have to look at them."

How much longer was this going to last, Favor wondered? The Zion needed a Doctor who was firing on all cylinders, and it appeared to her that the doctor had one foot on a banana peel and the other foot in a looney bin.

“No, Ensign there is no need to take over my shift, everybody deserve a rest including you", Teilani said while blowing her nose in a tissue, "those two men are my responsibility, my nemesis so to speak . I will simply have to deal with it. Go back to your quarters and relax, there will be new day tomorrow, that’s an order!.”

Teilani looked at her reflection in the window, she looked like hell, and started putting loose strands of hear back in its ponytail. With firm strides she passed along Favor, leaving her a bit bewildered.

Teilani turned back to Favor, "Ensign Favor, I know we have our differences," she said with a little smile around her lips, "but thank you for your concern, I appreciate that. Don’t worry I will be alright”.

Favor had her doubts about that.
