=USS Zion=

John rang the door chime on the Captain's ready room. It was time for his morning meeting with the captain.

"Enter" came the reply."

John entered and stood across from the captain. "Good morning Captain. Today is a good day to launch the Zion."

"I was hoping to hear you say that." smiled Hunter has he sat back.

"All departments have reported in and are at their stations. We do have the problem with a missing doctor. So far he has failed to report in." said John.

"Any idea on where he may be?"

"No Sir!", said John

"Lets continue with our excursion to Bajor as planned.

"Absolutely sir!", said John

Hunter wasn't a betaziod, but he could tell Wright had more to say, and he had a pretty good idea what it was about.

"Have you had a chance to read this morning's personnel report?"

"I have sir." John paused, "I noticed that Ensign Riaan has been assigned to the Ops position."

"Correct" said Hunter.

"In light of her past history and the report from the counselor so you think this is a wise idea?" asked John

Hunter sighed. "I think it is a better idea than working in security." He said.

"What concerns me sir is her issues with anger management and the counselors statement about her being unstable. In my opinion captain she may be risk to the crew." responded John.

"Of course Number One. Your concern is duly noted." Hunter said. "I can't help thinking it might be a bit of a cultural trait. We both know many fine Klingon officers who would fair no better in a counselor's report."

"I've learned to trust my instincts, I think this will work. But I've been wrong before, that's why I'm counting on you to be a second set of eyes and ears."

"Yes sir, it is your decision, however, if I think for a moment that she is putting this ship or it's crew in danger I will throw her into the brig.

"Of course," Hunter replied, "I'd expect no less from you in regards to anyone on this ship."

"Very well sir. I better start looking for that doctor." Said John with a smile.

"Excellent, carry on." Said Hunter standing up.

John smiled and walked out of the Captain's office. "This is going to be an interesting assignment", he thought.

Lieutenant Lindsey couldn't help but wonder who would replace her as she said her farewells to her staff. "I will be coming back to the base in the future. I expect you all to give your new chief the same respect you gave me. I will keep in contact."

Lindsey's comm badge beeped, "Ensign Forrester to Lt Lindsey."

Go Ahead.

"The captain has moved up our departure from Qul Tuq to intercept the Kittyhawk. Are you ready to beam aboard?"

"Yes Ensign. Energize."

When Lieutenant Lindsey matrialized on the transporter pad of the Zion she saw an Ensign dressed in gold.

"Welcome aboard. I'm Ensign Forrestor. Shall I show you to your quarters," she said with a welcoming smile.

The two preceded down the corridor to the turbolift. "Deck two."

They arrived at Brittany's quarters to find her things had already been transported. Forrester pulled up a duty roster from a computer. "Hmm..." she said " You've been scheduled for the Conn at 0700 day after tommorrow. I'll let you get settled in. You can drop by Miranda's tonight. Most of the crew should be there or somewhere else on the deck if the don't have a shift."

"Thank you Ensign."

=USS Zion - Bridge=

Capt Hunter stepped onto the Bridge from his ready room. Already the bridge crew had begun to make final preparations to get underway. He looked at the main viewing monitor. Nearby stars showed brightly through the docking moores. He strode across the bridge and sat in the captain's chair for the first time. He looked over at Wright who was busy monitoring progress. He greeted his first officer, "Number One," he said with a nod.

The captain watched and listened to what was going on around him. Everyone on the bridge seemed so young. The helmsman tapped on his console, "...confirmed port side umbilical connectors disengaged. Releasing docking moores in 30 seconds. All inertial dampers online..."

The captain leaned over to Wright, "Status Number One?"

"All stations report ready Captain. The fleet yards have requested a few minutes to clear the docking clamps and open the space dock doors. " replied Wright.

After 10 minutes everything was quiet. All was ready. The captain tapped his console, "All hands, this is the Captain. I'm pleased to announce that we are about to get underway. We're two days away from our shake down excursion but we all realize that this is where it all begins. I want to congratulate everyone for being a part of this crew. Captain out."

The captain smiled and nodded to Wright to get things started.

"Helm ahead one quarter impulse power.", instructed Wright, " Let's take this thing for a spin."

The helmsman fumbled with the console for several moments, the captain gave Wright a slightly pained look. After a minute the helmsman turned and reported to the captain. "I...I...I'm sorry sir, I seem to have locked out the helm, these configurations are a little different from the academy trainers, he bowed his head, this is the first Sovereign class I've flown."

The captain sat back and gave the commander a side-ways glance, he seemed slightly amused. "Number One," said the captain with a gesture, "would you care to do the honor and maneuver us out of space dock?

Wright stood up and walked to the helm. The embarrassed helmsman got up to relinquish his seat.

"Ensign, where are you going? Please sit down." said Wright.

"Yes sir.", said the helmsman as he sat back down.

Wright typed the access code into the console and said "Now look closely at the console Ensign, is it really all that different from what you trained on or are you just nervous?"

"I guess I am just nervous Sir.", he said tapping in the coordinates and looking at the Commander.

"Ahead one quarter impulse power Ensign." said Wright again.

"Aye Sir!", said the ensign as the great ship moved forward through the massive doors. "Thank you Sir."

The USS Zion banked sharply and changed course and accelerated to full impulse power. This was the beginning. She would take her place among the finest ships in the galaxy and do her part to help plot the uncharted destiny of the future. Her brand-new shiny plated hull glimmered in the light of the distant sun. Inside, her crew manned their stations, ensuring everything was functioning normally as the ship entered orbit around Bajor.

"Standard orbit Ensign." , instructed Wright.

"Aye sir. Standard orbit Sir." Said the ensign who was now so absorbed in flying the Zion that he had forgotten his earlier troubles. John was somewhat amused by the huge grin on the young ensign's face as he brought the ship into orbit around Bajor.

"Mister. Westfall, please send our greetings to Bajor." said Wright.

"I guess this would be a good time to recheck all systems and bring the warp core up to 100%" smiled the Captain with a nod of approval. "But it appears that everything is working perfectly."

"Indeed Sir. Indeed." said John.

=Uss Zion, Outside Intelligence Office=

Charles had just finished his shift and was proceeding to Miranda's he was gonna meet Melissa and he was very eager to see her. He entered the place and salute the bartender and saw her sitting in a corner so he proceded to the place where she was while he said "Hi honey how's everithing?"

=Miranda's=

Melissa turned at the sound of his voice "Hi Love, Good...", she gave him a kiss and made a sign to him to sit down. They sat down and ordered some drinks while they started to chat about their day.

Suddenly a young male aproched to them and since he was wearing a starfleet uniform and saluted him he said

"Hello Ensign I'm Lt Jg Atwood, What can i do for you?", He asked with a smile

Ensign Jeff Westfall, Tactical Officer, USS Zion, Sir, and it's a pleasure to meet you.

"Thanks Ensign...May I Introduce Ensign Melissa Jarvis my fiancee", he said while he pointed at her

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Ma'am. Welcome aboard the U.S.S. Zion

"Hello...I'm Mellisa would you care to join us for a coffe?", she asked

I'd love to, actually. I'm sure I could call a cup of coffee with two fellow officers, "Departmental Relations".

Charles Started to Laugh and Showed Ens Westfall the Chair In front of them while he said "Nice one Jeff...Mind if i call You by your First Name?"

"Certainly, Lt. Atwood, I have no problem with that at all...you are a superior officer, as well. But I believe (with no disrespect) that constant acknowledgment of rank can "get in the way" if we're all so busy tripping over each other's titles, Sir".

"I Concurr... By the way it's Charles when we are of dutie and loose the sir thing if you dont mind...Inside Miranda's we are just friends having a meal, Out there we are in starfleet", he said smiling

"Understood Charles, How did you come to be aboard the Zion, if you don't mind my asking?", Said Jeff

"Not at All...Well one day I was serving on Qul Tuq as Chief Engineer and The CO and Some crew where killed in an accident and Melissa here was seriously injured, so when she woke up we discussed and We requested a transfer to the Zion and Here we are" answered Charles while he holded Mellisa's hand

"I'm sorry to hear about that. I trust you're okay now Ma'am?", Jeff said to Mellisa.

"Mellissa If you don't mind...Yes I'm Fine Thanks to Charles that Helped me in recovering my sanity", said Mellisa

"I'm glad to hear that Mellissa, we can all use close friends to keep our sanity out here, otherwise it would be a very lonely and dangerous place.", Said Jeff

"Indeed It will...And you how did you get here?", asked Charles

"I joined Starfleet at 23 as a Cadet, and took advanced tactical training at the Academy, because of all the positions in Starfleet, I figured they could best make use of my penchant for solving puzzles, mathematical, logical and psychological", said Jeff.

"mmmthat sounds like Intelligence Work to me" Added Charles.

"It is to a degree, but it's also a "transferrable skill, to anticipate what an opponent is going to do, and why", Answered Jeff "I think the other aspect is to understand how your department works Anyway, I graduated from Starfleet, and then found myself as crewman on a couple of ships doing "joe jobs"...paying my dues, as it were"

Then all the crap happened with the demise of Starfleet (as it was Chartered by the United Federation of Planets). My Captain at the time didn't like it, so the Senior Staff brought the ship U.S.S Triton , into the Maquis Alliance. I was aboard when the ship was attacked, the Tactical Officer was injured, so I got seconded to Tactical From there I wound up at Station Qul Tuq and was asked to serve with Captain Hunter I accepted, he's a fine officer.", Finished Jeff

"Mmm...Interesting story, and of course Captain Hunter's Reputation proceeds him", said Charles

"Do you Have Brothers or Sisters Jeff?", Asked Melissa "No, Just myself, I was born on the Lunar Colony Io, one of the moons of Jupiter, in the Sol System. There's just me, and my parents of course", Stated Jeff

"Oh...My Parents where killed by the cardassians ride when I was 15", Said Charles

"Mmm that's sad, My father was an astrophysicist, my mother was a Library Sciences Specialist at the institute for Deep Space Research I first set foot on Earth when I went to Starfleet Academy, I was 23 when I went in , and 28 when I finished Advanced Tactical From there, I served in Starfleet until the Rebellion, and the ship I was on "defected" to the Maquis Alliance, and I found myself at Qul Tuq, waiting for a new posting. The request came from command, and I accepted", Concluded Jeff.

"Oh...That's Nice", Said Charles. Suddenly Charles Commbadge sounded and Someone requested his Presence in Intelligence office so he said "Well Jeff It was nice to meet you and I hope we can do this aggain some other day"

"You're on for a raincheck, Charles, it was nice to meet you Melissa", Said Jeff

Melissa and Charles stood up and Left

Jeff finished his coffee, and returned to his quarters.

=BRIDGE=

The Captain stood up and walked around to the tactical officer's perch. "Mr. Westfall, Please review all Cardassian data. I've received word that they're now using cloaking devices. If we run into any hostile Cardassians, I want the quickest tactical resolution possible."

Aye Aye, Captain Hunter. I whole-heartedly concur. The middle of a fire-fightis no time to start reacting to threats you hadn't considered at all likely. That's what the enemy *loves* to throw out. "Sitting Duck Shooting Gallery", is what I've heard it called. Find them all quietly swimming along, pop your gun barrel out the blind, and "*BANG*". You've just *bagged* Momma, Papa, and all the chicks too. It's a hell of a good way to break up a family. "I'm sorry Son, you're an orphan...because your Daddy didn't *think* the bad men were out to get him". Hunter gave Westfall a perplexed look as he continued to ramble,

Captain, any solid intel whose cloaking technology they're using? The counter-measures are slightly different, and It would help me fine-tune our offensive and defensive systems. This is certainly "news-flash" category material to me, I didn't think the Cardassians would be able to install cloaking technology into their systems, from an engineering standpointat least as I *was* taught at the Academy. Sir: Remind me to move all my obsolete notes to the History Appendix, I *Really* hate crowding my PADD with old news.

Hunter ruefully shook his head, hoping that Mr. Westfall wasn't always so narrative.

"Slow down a little don't get carried away...now, I am not sure who's cloaks they are using, the Commodore didn't say. Just maintain active scans, report anything unusual to me right away. You see anything that makes you nervous, sound yellow alert and go to full shields," said Hunter.

"Standard procedure, Captain, we don't *have* to hide, there is a certain tactical advantage to active sensor sweep. It *can* be interpreted that we're the predator, and that's an edge. They have to guess whether your "finger" the one on my hand, Sir is itchy enough to "Fire"! On the Captain's order, of course.

Again, Hunter shook his head. "Mr. Westfall," said Hunter stepping close to him, with a stern and subdued voice, "...in the future, please save your witty commentaries for deck 10. When you are on my bridge I expect short and concise responses. Is that understood Ensign?"

"Understood, Sir...Sorry about that. Occasionally, my tongue gets ahead of my brain, and I ramble".

Hunter took a step back from Westfall and smiled with a nod, "good."

"We have an Intel officer on board, I would suggest visiting with him about the Cardassian cloaking technology."

"That would be Mr. Atwood, I think is his name, Sir"?

You are Correct.

When I get through with my shift here, I'll see if he's on or off duty and see if we can have an informal discussion and go over what is commonly known about Cardassian technology adaptations.

Exceptional Ensign, said Capt Hunter, carry on then. If you need anything, Ill be in my ready room.

The Captain made his way to the ready room, he looked over his shoulder as the door closed.
