==Transporter room #1== The captain materialized on the transporter pad, he was greeted by a whoo-hooo sound, an old and familiar maritime tradition. Four crewman stood at attention and someone announced, "Captain on deck," A female ensign in a gold uniform stepped forward and greeted the captain.

"Welcome aboard, I'm Ensign Forrester," she said promptly saluting him.

"Everyone at ease," said the captain with a smile. He stepped off the transporter pad and handed the tranporter crew a 2 PADDs, "my things ensign," he said, "I travel light."

The crewman made some adjustments in the transporter control and energized the transporter. A tabby cat materialized. The cat jumped off the transporter padd and came to the captain when he whistled. The captain said to the transporter crewman, Beam the rest of my belongings to my quarters, the fish goes in my ready room. The crewman gave the captain a perplexed look. "Some of these items are weapons."

The captain smiled, "Oh, of course, my collection." he said with a grin, "don't loose them." He picked up his cat and followed Forrester to deck 2. "I'm sure you will find the quarters to your liking sir," Hunter set the cat down and stood up, "of course ensign, thank-you." When the ensign left Hunter closed his eyes, his nostrils took in the fresh and brand new smell of the room. It was an honor to have a brand new ship. A few moments later, his luggage materialized. He unpacked his uniforms and other clothing. He set some isolinear storage devices containing his favorite replicator recipes and holosimuations on his desk. He looked over the quarters, seeing Chester had already found a spot too, he headed up to the bridge.

Transporter room #1 -- USS ZION

Ensign FOrrester greeted Riaan as she stepped off the transporter pad with an extended hand, "Welcome aboard the USS-Zion, Riaan. I'll assist you in getting settled in and orientated to the ship. If you have any questions, let me know," she said.

"Yes ma'am," replied Riaan.

"Step over to the computer console and well get you authorized." She walked to the console across from the transporter control and nodded to the transporter chief. The computer console displayed Riaan's DNA patterns and began processing her records. A moment later, the computer said, "Please state your full name for the record."

"Riaan," she said. The computer chimed, "Authorization completed."

"Ok," Forrester said smiling, "lets go down to your quarters, the transporter crewman will beam your belongings directly there.

Riaan followed Forrester to the turbo lift, "Deck 6, she instructed the computer." She turned to Riaan and said, "the captain asked me to make sure you got a good room, I think you will like this one, its one of the few with a forward facing portal. I hope you like it."

The turbo lift opened and they stepped out. Just a few doors down from the turbo lift was Riaan's quarters, "They are also nearby the turbo lift in case you need to respond to a security emergency."

They stepped inside, "Officer's quarters are equipped with type 2 replicators, suitable for beverages, snacks and small meals. You have a meeting with the captain at 0930. Is there anything else I can help you with?

"No ma'am", replied Riaan. "Thank you very much for all the assistance."

Ensign Forrester bid Riaan a good day and dismissed herself.

After Forrester left Riaan went to the replicator and ordered a coffee.

She was surprised everything was here already. She wasn't sure where to start but was in no great rush.

After putting out a few things out to make it look somewhat like home and after finishing her coffee Riaan placed her cup back in the replicator.

Not knowing the ship very well Riaan decided to leave early to meet the captain. She preferred to be early not late.

==Captain's Ready Room==

Captain Hunter sat down and put his feet on his desk. He closed his eyes and listened to the silence. He knew what he was about to do would set in motion a chain of events that would change everything. Hell, if the ship's tour was successful, they might even help shape the future. He was ready to stir the beast to life. In a sense, thought Hunter, the ship is sort of alive after all.

Commander Wright, please report to the ready room

On my way Sir! replied Wright.

Wright was still on Qul Tuq, he tapped his comm badge again, "Wright to Zion, one to beam up."

A few moments later the transporter cycle completed and he found himself staning in the transporter room. Leaving the transported toom Wright entered a nearby turbolift.

"Deck 1", he said.

Wright entered a very quiet bridge and rang the chime on the captain's ready room.

"Enter," said Capt. Hunter. Hunter stood up and greeted Wright with a hand shake. He gestured for Wright to have a seat as he said down.

Well, number one, I've just spoken with the Admiral, he's officially turned the Zion over to us. Are you ready to get to work?" asked Capt. Hunter.

Wright smiled and, "Absolutely Captain. I have met with Operations and they already have a plan for loading the crew. Transporter staff are already at their posts. We will be loading by departments Security, and Operations will be first. Kelly Forrester in Operations has already assigned the crew quarters. She is taking care of lodging."

Captain Hunter leaned back in his chair, a slight smile graced his face. He knew he had picked the right man for the job.

"Excellent number one."

"I will meet later this morning with the tactical officer. Since the rest of your command crew has not yet arrived on the Kitty Hawk I suggest that we have the Tactical Officer," Wright check his PADD," Westfall act at head of security. I will ask him to set up a security plan."

"That sounds reasonable." said Hunter, "It looks like you have the matters well in hand. Go ahead and make final preparations for your plan. Well done number one.

"Thank you Sir! I aim to please." said Wright.

Captain Hunter stood up, "Very well Commander," he said with a grin, "carry on."

"Yes Sir!", Said Wright. He was looking forward to this assignment.

=USS Zion - XO's Office=

Wright to Ensign Westfall. Please report to my office.

Aye Aye Sir, I'll be there in under five minutes," Westfall replied.

Jeff finished his morning coffee from the replicator in the Mess Hall, and left. Three minutes later, breathing heavily, Westfall entered Wright's office. The Commander motioned for him to sit down.

"Good morning Ensign, The Head of security has not yet arrived. He is due to arrive on the USS Kitty Hawk. The Captain and I would like you to act in his capacity until he arrives. Do you think you are able to do that?" asked Wright.

"Aye Aye, Sir. I have had some experience with Security as Ship's Tactical Officer. My training includes familiarity with all Maquis Alliance Command security, communications, tactical, offensive and defensive planning, counter-measures, surveillance and containment protocols," Jeff Westfall replied, smoothly, as if reading items off of a restaurant menu board.

"Good, we need to have a security plan created. Operations has already started bringing people on board you will need to organize the security department to provide coverage on all decks. There will also be a dedication ceremony tomorrow that will need a security detail.", Wright paused, "Any questions?"

"There are actually a couple of relevant questions. First question, where is the dedication ceremony being held, and at what time? Can I assume about 25 VIP Guests plus whatever Ship's Company are already aboard Station Qul Tuq?

"Actually, the ceremony will be on the station's observation deck at 14:00. You might want to contact station security and touch base with them. Afterwards there will be a reception in the ship's lounge." said Wright.

"I assume Full Dress Uniforms, Sir"? Westfall queried.

"Yes", Wright replied.

"Next, a recommendation: The USS Zion is a massive ship, and I believe the security officers already on Qul Tuq assigned to us, represent a skeleton staff, at this point. I'd like to suggest that I test the containment systems by erecting force fields around unused portions of the ship, such as the Marine Deck, that way we're not using Security Officers as traffic cops, just to keep the tourists out of sensitive areas."

"You are in charge. You may use your best judgement.", said Wright.

"Let me know if you need anything further from me.", said Wright.

"Other than that, I'm going to shake down the internal sensors by doing a sweep of the ship, and eliminate the personnel by their comm badge signatures, then make sure there's no life signs left".

Having done that, then I know we can contact all the members of the Ship's Company discretely when we have the VIP compliment aboard. That's about it, Commander Wright."

"Very good Ensign. Carry on."

Thank you, Sir, and it's a pleasure to meet you.

= = Captain's ready Room = =

Riaan entered the ready room. "Please have a seat Ensign," I have some questions about your service record."

Riaan took a seat feeling rather nervous. What questions do you wish to ask regarding my service record, asked Riaan?

At ease Ensign, please, have a seat, said Captain Hunter trying to warm the tone a little.

Yes sir, replied Riaan. Riaan took a seat waiting to see what concerns the captain had on his mind regarding her service record.

"Frankly, I am a little concerned about your previous experiences. You have an affiliation with a universally known terrorist organization and your background sounds much like that of a mercenary aboard the Panther."

Hunter paused to let her respond.

That is correct sir, but at the time I had not realized that. Zorbal who I knew for sometime was the one that trained me and he told me in confidence after I had asked that he please not inform my parents about me learning how to fight then he informed me that he was affiliated with the terrorist group that goes back generations within his family. I guess he felt that this was a good way of telling me after I had asked him to keep our meeting secret something private and maybe he felt by both of us having secrets if either of us relinquished one anothers secret that we have vowed not to then the other would then break the silence. It isnt spoken much this topic on our home planet.

You also have to remember sir, I havent been home for sometime nor have I been affiliated with the group as a whole I only knew the one person that was it.

He was the one that helped me get onboard the Panther to help hone my fighting abilities further. Dont get me wrong or anything sir but I did appreciate all Zorbals assistance. With all the training I had besides at the Academy I feel that will help me be a better Security Officer.

To summarize my stay onboard the Panther that is a good way of putting it sir. In the beginning it did bother me but in time I learned to block all emotions and learned not to show any weaknesses. I am afraid it is not uncommon, as you may very well know to have mercenaries around to do the dirty work for some. I learned basically how to become a killing machine that is the only way to put it and I do realize it was barbaric.

I do promise you though I will not use those abilities that I was taught. The only time is if there is a security breach or any of the crews lives are put at stake. I will protect this ship with my life as I have done onboard the Panther many times, as Riaan looked at Captain Hunter.

Are there any other questions or concerns that you have sir?

Captain Hunter leaned forward, "I appreciate what you are telling me Ensign. I think you have a lot of valuable experience. I'm still not entirely convinced you can unlearn such behavior." Hunter leaned back. "We have a saying on Earth Ensign, 'you can take the farm boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the farm boy.' He paused to see if she would understand what he was getting at.

He reached for a PADD, "Ensign, I am wondering, given your abilities, if you would consider a reassignment to the Operations department?"

Yes sir, as Riaan looked at the Captain.

"Good, before I make it official though, I would like you to do one more thing," said Hunter.

What is that sir?

"I'd like you to visit with Ensign Zoei, the ship's counselor." Hunter leaned back.

I would be willing to sir and I do understand your reservations. Riaan got up and shook Captain Hunters hand then came to full attention. If it is okay can I please settle into my new quarters before I report to her, as Riaan looked at Captain Hunter?

Hunter smiled, "Of course Riaan, do what you need to do."

Riaan then left and headed back to her new quarters to unpack before reporting to the ship's counselor.

=Qul Tuq= Slowly the shuttle reached the outer perimeter of the Qul Tuq space station. He steered him towards a docking bay he was instructed to use and slowly docked. He was tired after such a long journey but was glad that he finally had arrived at the station. After packing his gear he walked towards the exit. TO his surprise he saw a familiar face. He raised an eyebrow.

"Sarik, Its good to see you, its been a long time."

"3 years, 45 days and seven hours, sir." What was the logic in stating how long someone has been away?

"Sarik, I am grateful that you have accepted this position. Your expertise as a science officer and diplomat will no doubt contribute to the success of many missions." Hunter smiled at the Vulcan.

"I am honoured to serve you again, captain. Thank you for the compliment."

"Doug, Cindy, Silvio and A'nak, along with the rest of the surviving officers of the Hood will be rendezvousing with us on the shake down flight. They're coming on the USS Kittyhawk. Unless the Admiral has any other plans for us, I'm anxious to pick up where we left off."

"That is most peculiar; did all of you defect from the federation to join the maquis?"

Yes we did, nine years ago

"It will be a good complement for the crew, they are experienced officers."

Hunter nodded, "yes, a very good crew."

The both were walking down the hall towards the docking area.

"Have you had a chance to review the ship's specifications?" asked Hunter.

"I have studied the ship, she is a very capable ship for many different tasks that my lie ahead."

"I've arranged quarters on Deck 2 for you unless you wish something else."

"I have not yet inspected the quarters, but judging from experience you have provided me with suitable quarters."

Hunter nodded, "Go ahead then and get yourself moved in, if you don't have any questions, your dismissed....and Sarik? again, thanks."

"You are welcome captain. And may i say that you are invited by my wife to join us for a dinner, wehn we are at Vulcan." That was a large compliment for a vulcan to say.

=USS Zion - CSO's Office= Sarik walked with his gear down the corridor, he had just entered the Zion and was going straight to his new office. There were some preparations to make before they could get started. He entered the Science labs. They were larger then he had expected them. Perhaps his calculations weren't right, or the specs on the PADD were wrong. It must be latter he thought. He entered his office. It was large for a science Officer, he knew that he would spend most of his days here, and such an office was welcome. He sat down and unpacked his gear. It was most logical to install everything as soon as possible so he could get to work immediately. He downloaded the files he brought along from his own research on Vulcan, and installed some more programs he was using with his research. Then he checked the computer to see if it was suitable enough for him. He figured that he wanted some adjustments, but just as he started to make a plan for it the door chime rang.

"You may enter." He was not surprised that he saw someone new. As he stood up he looked at the officer.

Wright entered Sarik's office and stood before the Vulcan. He held up his hand in the traditional Vulcan gesture and said "Peace and long life Sarik"

"Live long and prosper." Returned Sarik. He gestured that he could come in and sit down.

"I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I am Commander John Wright." Said Wright.

"I read the reports, you seem a qualified officer for that position. It is good to meet you. "

"I see you are getting settled into your office. I trust that you have everything you need?"

"My needs are sufficiently satisfied. I believe I will make some adjustments to the computer system already as well as a general check up of everything around."

"We will be starting our initial shakedown cruise in a few days. I would like you to put together a plan to thoroughly test all of the ships sensors and scientific equipment." Said Wright.

"That will be most fortunate, i will check all equipment and run some diagnostics."

"If you run into an issues or need any resources from me. Please to not hesitate to bring them to my attention." Said Wright

"Thank you, your help is appreciated but I think I have everything under control. However there is one issue I would like to discuss at this moment."

"Go ahead Lieutenant."

"I am curious about my staff, when will they arrive, this science lab requires some personal to operate efficiently."

John picked up a PADD from Sarik's desk and pulled up the duty roster for the science department and handed the PADD to Sarik. "You will find the names and history of all the science staff assigned to the Zion on this list. You will notice there are varying levels of experience in the list." Wright paused, "I will trust you to put the right people in the right positions. I would also hope that you would place the less experienced staff in positions where they might develop their skills and expand their knowledge."

"Very well, I will look into the various applicants that have been provided by you and the captain. I will notify you shortly who I find suitable for this science lab."

"I will leave you to your work." Wright said.

"Thank you, commander Wright." Sarik nodded to Wright and he sat down behind his computer to start working on the changes he had in mind.

==Qul Tuq Space Dock Observation deck==

The captain stood next to the XO at the edge of the observation deck. It was crammed with people. He liked neither crowds nor dress uniforms. He tugged at his uniform trying to make it more comfortable.

Admiral Aldous emerged from the corridor. He was followed by a number of dignitaries, including Captain Worf from the Klingon fleet he commanded that was Qul Tuq's protection, Commander Data from the USS Sovereign, and Commander Hawkins, the new CO of Qul Tuq. Captain Hunter and Commander Wright saluted the Admiral as he walked by. They turned and followed the procession to the front of the observation deck where a small platform and a podium had been erected.

The group mingled briefly until 1400 when Fleet Admiral Steve Aldous stepped to the podium, holding his hands up for silent attention. He looked over at the media director who nodded, confirming everything was ok to proceed; this dedication ceremony was being shown throughout Qul Tuq, at the Admiral's request. It was also being recorded and would be sent to all the ships in the Maquis Alliance, so that everyone in the Maquis could be part of what the Admiral was about to say.

"Thank you," he said once the general murmur of chatter died down. "For those of you who have the pleasure of not knowing me, I'm Admiral Steve Aldous, Fleet CO for the Maquis Alliance. Thank you for coming along to see the completion of yet another of our Sovereign class ships. Now I know you're all wanting to get back to your conversations, the drinks and the food," he smiled, and there was polite laughter. "So I'll keep this brief. For too long now, we have been involved in a civil war that has seen many of us leave our homes, and often, our families. The circumstances have allowed us to CHOOSE leaving behind what we've held dear, but it hasn't made that choice easy, I know." He looked around at them, noticing some of those present had the look in their eyes that showed they were with him, remembering people they had left behind on Earth or other planets. He nodded slowly and continued.

"We've been at war with our families and our friends for too long. It's time we stopped reacting as we have done in the past. It's time we changed the style of our involvement." He looked around at the curious faces before him. "It's time we stopped reacting with war, and started reacting with peace!" There was applause, which faded as he held up his hands.

"The USS Zion is the first phase of our new strategy, to react with diplomacy rather than with combat." He looked at Captain Hunter who was looking surprised, and he smiled at the captain before returning his attention to the audience. He spoke slowly so as to get across his message. "The best position to react against aggression with diplomacy is a a position of strength, a position that allows US to dictate the terms of the negotiations. The USS Zion, along with the other Sovereign classes in the fleet, will react to aggression with non-aggression. Yes, they will likely be fired upon, but they will do everything they can - short of sacrificing themselves - to re-establish peace between the Maquis and the Federation. They will be doing everything they can to return you to your loved ones!"

The crowd erupted in applause again, and laughing with each other. The feelings of returning to family and friends still within the Federation had been brought to the fore in them. The Admiral glanced at Captain Hunter, smiling at him again. After a few moments, he brought his hands up for the crowd to become quiet again.

"The ship's quote that the Zion's captain has chosen is an appropriate one. I give you Captain Hunter, the Captain of the USS Zion, who can talk more about that." As the crowd clapped again, Admiral Aldous stepped down from the podium and shook hands with Captain Hunter.

"Thank you Admiral," said Hunter, "It is an honor to be the captain of this fleet's newest starship. With that honor comes responsibility and duty." Hunter paused, "...the crew of this ship and her captain are sworn to up hold the values and ideas of a new federation. We are emissaries, warriors and explorers but most importantly, we are here...to boldly answer the call of hope." He paused as the crowd clapped lightly.

"I'd like to introduce the USS-Zion's executive officer, Commander Wright." Capt Hunter stepped aside and Wright stepped up to the podium

"Good afternoon, today marks a bright new beginning. The beginning of a most beautiful ship the USS Zion." John paused for a small round of applause. "Let us also hope that is mark a different kind of beginning... the beginning of the end. The end of this terrible war that has torn us apart. John tunrned to Commander Hawkins and continued, "Commander Hawkins, would you please be so kind as to start the wonderful ship on her new beginning?"

Commander Hawkins held up a small device and pressed the button. Being the CO of Qul Tuq and its' shipyard, he had the honour of sending the ship off. A bottle of champagne jettisoned from a small hatchway and traveled towards the Zion, shattering against the hull.

The crowd again applauded their approval as the USS Zion used its thrusters to move out of its docking bay. It moved only a short distance, a ceremonial representation of a ship in Earth's history being released from its dock to slide a short way into the water. As everyone returned to their conversations and the party, Admiral Aldous left, accompanied by Hawkins.

Commander Data and Worf stood for a while, watching.

"I am always fascinated at how humans interact at social occasions like these," Data finally said to Worf. "You can learn so much about the social niceties of different races when they get together like this."

"Bah!" grunted Worf, turning to leave. "You can learn more if you get a good Klingon woman to show you a few things." He laughed as he passed Data, and headed out into the corridor.

Data cocked his head, thinking about what Worf had said, and then followedhim. "What could she teach me?" he asked curiously, and the party continued as the door closed behind them.

John sat quietly in the back of Quarks. He watched as many people lost large amounts of Latinum at the dabo tables. It was clearly going to be a good night for the house. A Ferengi strode throughout the bar with a large smile on his face. John could only assume that he was Quark, the owner.

John's attention turned to the entrance where a very beautiful woman had walked in. He watched as she visited with the happy Ferengi who pointed her in John's direction. The woman walked over to John's table and sat down.

"Hello, I am Miranda," she said.

"Hello Miranda, I am John Wright. I understand that you are looking for a job."

"Nice to meet you John Wright, I understand that you have a opening for a lounge manager on your fancy new starship," she said playfully.

John smiled, "Well, we do have a lounge, and we are without a manager for that lounge, but I am curious, Why would you want to tend bar on a warship. Certainly, there are safer jobs for you?"

"I am an El-Aurian Commander. I enjoy traveling and expanding my experience," she replied.

"You could rent a shuttle and travel Miranda, why my starship," he asked.

"Because it is new and I like new things Commander," she laughed, "The truth be told I have a friend in the Maquis aboard the USS Atlanta. He intrigued me so much that I thought that perhaps I would like to spend more time with you space warriors. I am also hoping to run into him again someday too."

"Well, he must be some friend," replied John.

"Indeed", she said, "So do I have the job?"

"Indeed," replied John. "When do you want to start?"

"The sooner the better. I have no luggage, I am ready to go now," she replied eagerly.

Together they walked out onto the promenade. "So, does your lounge have a name Commander?" asked Miranda

"Yes it does, It is called Miranda's," he said with a smile. Wright tapped his comm badge, "Wright to Zion, two to beam up."

=Qul Tuq Station=

Patia paced slowly in front of the observation deck, looking out at her new assignment.

As she gazed at the ship, she felt waves of emotions emanating from its crew. There was the raw edge of fear of the unknown coming from the new recruits. Intermingled with the fear was enthusiasm, pride and, in some instances, a euphoria of sorts. Frightening to her was a dark shadow that seemed to cross the ship. She couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from, other than it was from the crew already on board. She shivered slightly as she turned away from the view.

"Well, Patia," she said to herself, "this is what you have trained for all these years. All of the education and the initial duty station on the transporter have brought you to your lifelong goal. As of today, you are a counselor for a sovereign class star ship. Michelio is so proud of you, now you need to trust in your own abilities. You have the background, you have the knowledge, and you have the skills, believe in your ability to use them."

She turned back to the observation deck, tapped her communicator, "Zoie to Zion, one to beam up."

"Welcome aboard," greeted a female officer in a gold uniform, "I'm ensign Forrester, I'll assist you in getting settled in."

"Thank you, Ensign Forrester," replied Zoie. "I am Ensign Zoie. I appreciate you meeting me at this late hour. The transport ship I came in on ran into a little trouble and we were delayed by about half a day."

"Your things will be beamed to your quarters, I'll show you to your office and then to your quarters." Forrester said as they walked out the door and headed towards the turbolift.

"Again, thank you for the assistance. I was afraid no one would be up at this late hour," said Zoie.

"Deck 8" said Forrester as the turbolift door closed."How was your flight here?" asked Forrester making small talk.

"Other than the delay last evening, the flight was uneventful. How many more crew members are we waiting for, prior to departure? And how was the christening of the ship? I was disappointed my flight didn't make it in time to see that," replied Zoie.

"That is a shame," replied Forrester, "I'm sure you can retrieve it from the video archives. It was a nice ceremony"

They entered the spacious Counselor's office, it was divided into 3 areas, a comfortably furnished waiting area, a large private conversation room furnished with a variety of fixtures, tables sofas and other chairs. this room was suitable for meeting with a group, an individual or conferencing. Last their was the counselor's office, both rooms had starboard viewing portals. They entered the office and walked over to the console. "The ships counselor of course has priviledged information about all of the members of this crew." said Forrester smiling, "Computer, transfer authorization and access to Ensign Patia Zoei authorization Forrester, Alpha-Echo-1-1-Alpha." The computer chimed back, "transfer accepted."

"Do you have any questions?" asked Forrester.

"Not at this time," answered Zoie. "I am sure the questions will come but I would like the chance to familiarize myself with this area in the morning. I do not want to keep you any longer tonight, though."

Forrester smiled politely, "thank-you, I'll show you to your quarters."

Returning to the turbolift they headed to Deck 2. "Since you are considered bridge crew, your quarters are located on Deck 2"

They entered the quarters, Zoei's belongings were already sitting in the center of her quarters.

"Your quarters are equipped with a type II replicator suitable for beverages, snacks and small meals. Go ahead and get settled in, if you need anything else just let me know."

"I will be fine. Thank you again, for your time this evening. Rest well."

Forrester bid Zoei good night and left her to unpack

Zoie watched the door close behind Forrester with a gentle swoosh. She crossed to the replicator. "Two peanut butter cookies, warm, and a raspberry ice tea with two fresh raspberries"

Zoie carried her evening snack to her sitting area. She pulled a family picture from her traveling bag and set it on the end table. Her fingers whispered across the glass covering the faces of her mother, her father and her brother. She leaned her head against the back of the chair. Her last conscious thought was she should get unpacked, but it could wait until the morning.
