Giuseppe Silvio felt as if he were floating. Everything was foggy but peaceful. He wondered if this was what it was like to be dead. It was not a bad feeling but he was so alone. There was nothing here. What made matters worse was the he had no desire to be dead. He had his whole life ahead of him and did not want it to be over.

Then, off in the distance, he saw a brief flicker. Straining hard he was able to make out the figure of a woman…no it was an angel, Silvio was sure he was seeing an angel. A beautiful figure shrouded in the white mist. Surely this must be an angel, thought Silvio. He tried to call out to her but he could not. He tried to reach out to her but he could not move.

She talked about birds and broken wings. Silvio imagined that a broken wing was something that caused angels great pain and sorrow. He felt sad, he could see this angel was not happy. He wondered if her wing was broken.

Then the angel looked right at him and said, “The dead do not inhabit their graves, Silvio. Do you know this?"

What a strange thing for her to say, he thought. He wanted so badly to respond, to ask her what she was saying. The inability to do so frustrated Silvio. Firthering his frustration was the fact that he could not even scream in frustration. Surely being dead was not supposed to be this bad. His angel continued to talk but Silvio could not quite make out what she was saying. She was beginning to fade

“I’m leaving now…” she said as she continued to fade until she was gone. Silvio decided that he could not be dead. His angel would not have left him if he were. Silvio settled into a comfortable sleep, feeling protected by his angel.
